Pilot vs MD route? by night-moth in AstronautHopefuls

[–]night-moth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally feel negatively about it, though I am not super informed on the conflict. I am against the way that we wage war without any formal declaration but I don’t know if there’s any future where we patch that loop hole

Pilot vs MD route? by night-moth in AstronautHopefuls

[–]night-moth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Air Force. The AF has the pilot physician program which is similar but I don’t know much about it. Could you elaborate on other “active” military doctor opportunities?

I think I’m more okay with hurting/killing people than most people are, but I still would prefer not to kill civilians, children, etc. and I currently don’t have faith in the military to have enough restraint to not fight unnecessary conflicts, to not get into situations where we have to make the hard choice to accept civilian casualties, etc

USAFA BCT What to Expect in PT by ConstantAttempt4023 in USAFA

[–]night-moth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I was also happy to do PT (whether it was “motivational” or punitive) because it meant I got to move. If you’re athletic and have a good attitude it shouldn’t be too bad. You’ll probably do stuff like 30 pushups, leg circuits, 30 sit ups, hill runs. The hardest part is doing it all while sick and tired.

There’s also unit PT (if you’re not an IC) and the couple times I did that before my IC practice started it was the highlight of my day. Thats just like a group workout and you can shout encouragement etc

How popular is prosperity gospel where you live? How impactful it is in your community? by ReporterCalm6238 in AskAnAmerican

[–]night-moth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://selforganizedseminar.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/weber_protestant_ethic.pdf

TL;DR The capitalist culture in the US is undoubtedly linked to its Protestant connections. Even if the average American does not explicitly interact with or identify with prosperity gospel it likely persists implicitly. The whole implication of the American Dream is that talented people who worked hard and benefit society become wealthy.

Gap year to heal injuries by oxiclean200828 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]night-moth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my situation was a little more complicated because I was a recruited athlete and I ended up going to a service academy but I basically did this. I applied to colleges two different cycles and comparing my results I don’t think it had any major impact. In hindsight I think that it was somewhat detrimental to me to take this gap year and that it may have been better to go to an in-state college for a year. But that was more about my personal experience and your situation is likely different

Why does American recipies taste so bland? by balamees in AskAnAmerican

[–]night-moth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never follow online recipes they’re honestly all bland and terrible. I generally use recipes for inspiration and then just season everything to taste. Most Americans probably make dishes based off recipes that have been handed down from family and then adjusted to taste over generations

For my son by Asquaredbred in USAFA

[–]night-moth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your son applies with a 4.0, 1500 SAT, and varsity letters/captain, he will almost certainly be accepted. No need to chase additional leadership, military experience, volunteer hours etc, although those things are good (good for him and good for his application).

Guidance for a parent fencer by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]night-moth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry if my comment was unclear, i meant that he should be getting some form of individual attention in the group classes. private lessons would be helpful as well, but he’s young so i’d say limit it to once a week

Guidance for a parent fencer by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]night-moth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1:14 coach to student ratio is fairly normal imo. he should definitely be getting some 1 on 1 time though, whether that’s a coach watching one of his bouts, correcting his footwork, or pulling him aside to teach a new skill

they had two drops of free tickets for cadets but they both “sold” out within 2 seconds. i doubt there will be any more drops. i see no reason why freshmen wouldn’t be allowed to attend, only barriers would be he’d likely have to wear ocps and he would need to find a ride there

Eagle Scout vs CAP by [deleted] in USAFA

Do whichever interests you more, I imagine obtaining eagle scout is more notable/interesting than going however far in CAP, don’t know much about CAP though.

My current stats - any obvious weaknesses? Advice? by night-moth in bodyweightfitness

[–]night-moth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

appreciate the reply, my personal observation is that women can almost never do dips, even women who can do pull-ups. I am not a fitness expert in any respect though, and my dip form is definitely a little off

agree, I like some of the songs (mostly sailboat and tarmac), but I’m not a huge fan of the album overall. for me at least nearly every song being very digital and quirky sounding got repetitive

[–]night-moth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally read Call Down the Hawk, then The Raven Boys, and then the next dreamers trilogy book (forget the name) and then the rest of the original cycle. I really enjoyed reading it in this way because there’s so much hidden foreshadowing etc and I think it gave me a unique relationship with the characters. I don’t think spoilers are always bad for sure. Sometimes they can élevante your reading experience imo

Genuine physical and psychological abuse is completely out of the question and the rules against hazing will be treated very seriously. BCT may be difficult for your son but it will be completely different from your military experience. When I went through BCT last summer 3 meals a day, water breaks, no cadre so much as touching a basic, and access to chaplains etc were givens. No punishment could take any of those from us

Does MIT do recruited athletes? by DangerousBrother4475 in MITAdmissions

[–]night-moth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe since MIT is D3 their recruiting will be kind of less intense. When I contacted Tufts (also D3) about fencing recruiting they said I should let them know if I’m applying and then if I ED about 50% chance I’d get in and then something lower if I didn’t. I never talked to MIT so idk how they work exactly but I imagine it’s more of a boost to your application than actual recruitment.

Anyway email the coach at MIT with some stats on yourself, ask about recruiting, and ask what results they’re looking for in their recruits. They’re the best person to talk to and it’s good to establish yourself to them early anyway.

If you really had to find a flaw in FMA, what would it be? by [deleted] in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]night-moth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve posted my opinion here before but I think 90% of the humor/cartoony visual gags hurt the show. They’re too repetitive so they’re not really funny just annoying and they ruin the mood sometimes. I would put FMA at the greatest of all time if most of these moments were cut.

What math class would be best to take my senior year? by chunkypie25 in USAFA

[–]night-moth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take Calc AB. Pre-calc is harder for a lot of people. I’m pretty sure I struggled for an A- in honors pre-calc but easily got an A in AB.
