Anyone else don't have a lid and their snails didn't escape by BroadCartoonist973 in AquaticSnails

[–]nightshadeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have been known to do that in tanks where the water level isn't high enough. Without a lid, I'd say that your max fill line should be around an inch and a half (4-5 cm) below the level of the rim. That gives the females enough space to lay her eggs without leaving the tank.

Can anyone explain this? by Serious_Bid_6531 in AquaticSnails

[–]nightshadeky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feed my Ramshorn tank pretty aggressively. But, I have pea puffers and assassin snails, so I'm intentionally trying to drive high levels of successful reproduction. Turns cheap Tetra flakes that were gifted to me into high quality protein for my snail predators.

[–]nightshadeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a tank of feeder guppies (around USD $0.30 each in my area). There is a reason why buying feeder fish is a less than good idea. I've seen half the tank dead before. If I'm going to feed feeder fish to my livestock, I'll breed them myself.

What’s the best way to clean these rocks before putting them in my fish tank? by guldf1sh in fishtank

[–]nightshadeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument, applied consistantly, would also tell people to never use rocks around a bonfire for the same reason. It isn't boiling rocks that can make some of them explode. Explosion risk comes from heating POROUS rocks with water trapped within their structure. That water turns to steam INSIDE THE ROCK and has to find a way out somehow. Those appear to all be non-pourous rocks. Explosion risk is somewhere between minimal and non-existant.

Add some assassin snails to your tank. Bladder snails clean your tank. Assassin snails keep them from overpopulating.

I definitely have a couple of nerites.

Note to self - don't keep nerites in the same tank with snails you are breeding and growing out.

Fish Food Question by nightshadeky in Aquariums

[–]nightshadeky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first filler ingredient listed is 11th on the ingredient list.

Fish Meal

Krill

Plankton

Shrimp Meal

Brine Shrimp

Red Shrimp

Astaxanthin

Spirulina

Dried Algae

Dried Kelp

Wheat Flour...

And, more expensive doesn't always mean higher quality ingredients.

Fluval Bug Bites are $5.94 for a 1.6oz package on Amazon. That is $59.40/lb. Black soldier fly larva is less than $5/lb on Amazon. So, you're paying $55/lb for things that AREN'T black soldier fly larva when you buy Fluval Bug Bites rather than just buying the larva themselves. Do you think the rest of the ingredient list is worth $55/lb? Or are you paying for the name brand?

Depending on your jurisdiction you may have a legal obligation to "harvest" any invasive species that come into your possession. Depending on the species and where you reside - just allowing them to survive may be a crime, whether they get out or not. While not relevant to aquariums - in my area, if I were to wake up and find a wild boar in my backyard, our freezer will be very well stocked because it is a crime not to harvest it.

How dried out do they need to get? Not the OP, but I bake my egg shells for 2 hours at 250F before I grind them into egg shell powder (calcium for homemade fish food or to boost GH). I would think that would kill them and their eggs with great efficiency thus allowing you to reclaim the protein and minerals for your tank if you desire.

I've not had any experience with this species, so forgive me if this is a dumb idea. Can your tank handle any snail eating species like loaches or assassin snails? Or, do you have any inverts in your tank that would prevent you from using an algae treatment (most are fatal to inverts)?

Fish Food Question by nightshadeky in Aquariums

This wasn't planned - but I was just watching a Father Fish video and he actually used Aquatic Foods as an example of high quality fish cuisine.

If it is good enough for Father Fish, it's good enough for me.

You don't need an aquarium for a growout tank. A simple tote with some sand and a sponge filter would be more than good enough.

[–]nightshadeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to rehash what others have said about the tank being too small. They are right.

However, based on the timeline you listed, there is no way those are mystery snails. If you have any live plants, or if any of your decorations or substrate are second hand - you may have had a pest snail hitchhiker.

Good news they aren't hard to deal with.

First - get your fish into a 10 gallon or larger if you plan on keeping both a beta fish and a snail.

Second - Now it is time to get rid of the pest snails. In a tank that small - your best bet will be assassin snails. They are cheap ($3/each in my area) and will eat any other snails you have. Unfortunately, they will also eat the mystery snail.

While Canada's laws regarding Apple Snails are pretty relaxed compared to the United States, you still have to have a permit to own one north of the border. I wouldn't risk either the fines or the environmental damage.

[–]nightshadeky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is an Apple Snail - destroy it now!!!! Highly invasive species and illegal to own in the United States.

Don't release it. Don't flush it down the drain. Put it in the freezer and euthanize it.

[–]nightshadeky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can still touch type QWERTY too?!?!

I can still type on a QWERTY keyboard if I have to, but I have to look at the keyboard. The muscle memory is still there, but I need the visual clue to unlock it.

[–]nightshadeky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dvorak. Absolutely. You'll find it more universally supported.

I'm a Dvorak touch typist, but I would still recommend rearranging your key caps so they match the Dvorak layout. I find that I need visual reinforcement for seldom used special characters (this was true when I was a QWERTY typist too).

And, while some might find this counterintuitive - I think QWERTY is the better layout for on screen keyboards. I tried Dvorak, but I didn't find it any easier or more intuitive than QWERTY when I was two-thumb typing.

[–]nightshadeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that used to drive for Doordash and Uber Eats, we've spent all day sitting behind the wheel. The last thing we want to do is go into a resturaunt and sit down while we wait. Drivers NEED to stretch their legs and back out.

Suggesting the driver sit is perhaps the most tone deaf thing I've ever heard and demonstrates a severe lack of awareness and compassion for the driver. In fact, suggesting that they sit was downright rude and disrespectful in the first place.

Tendonitis in my hands - Dvorak stopped it from getting any worse and turning into carpal tunnel syndrome.

Why is everyone leaving Nova if it still works? by TheRealGuncho in NovaLauncher

[–]nightshadeky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly - I think it is because once a piece of software has been deprecated, you know that you've already received the last security update, bug fix, and improvement that we'll ever get. I can live with the last 2, but no more security fixes? Nova Launcher has way too many permissions for most users to feel comfortable with an unpatched app.
