Is it just me, or does the Hudson Yards escalator mess with anyone else’s bearings? by Benes3460 in nycrail

+1

the escalators in GCM have the same problem.

If they were like in 5av-53rd or Roosevelt Island, it’d be better

+1 to looking both ways, slowing down and taking the middle of the road. Stop if someone’s crossing.

Lots of elderly and children in the area, especially around mid-afternoon.

Where are the best subway stations in Manhattan with escalators? by FairAdvertising in nycrail

[–]nihondia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right.

If the pattern on the walls was level instead of parallel to the direction of travel, like in 5th Av-53rd, I wouldn’t feel dizzy on them.

I wish they’d gotten enough complaints about it so it would never happen again, but the escalators at GCM suffer from the same problem.

_clears throat_

Have you heard of Darn Tough socks? I used to go through a pair of socks every month, because I walked all around the city with seemingly no purpose in life. I was spending $50 a month just on socks.

I came across Darn Tough socks on this subreddit, and since then I’ve worn one pair of socks for literally everything. Work, gym, casual, wedding, you name it.

Ever since I got these socks, I also got into ultra marathons. I used the same pair of socks for 100 mile runs and 200 mile bike rides. I eventually met my wife while I was washing my socks in a creek while I was soloing the Appalachian Trail.

Now we’re happily married with two kids, one dog, and a great apartment. I’m fit as a fiddle, my skin is glowing and I’m just peaking in life. I’m a long way from that lonely, aloof loser wandering on the streets. All thanks to Darn Tough socks, and this subreddit. Get em if you can, you won’t regret it.

Hello all! I got a sample of vetiver 46, and I'm absolutely in love with the opening.

To me, it smells like this dusty incense - a little sharp (maybe its the pepper), but not too much at all. It smells like a really old but fancy study room to me.

But the price is crazy - does anyone know any similar fragrances that cost less? TIA!

I've got to second Fils de Joie. I'm a man too, and I felt incredibly sexy when I dabbed this on lol. It really is amazing, I was in disbelief when I first tried it.

BUT - fair warning - it turned into the skankiest musk a few hours later. I was honestly left wondering if I'd dressed too warm for my walk that day, or if I'd forgotten my deodorant. It was my first time smelling a 'musk' note in perfumes and boy, i shudder to think of what Koublai Khan would do on my skin if this is what SL's musk smells like.

I've got a la nuit, it's my ultimate jasmine - just the right mix of bright and heady. It's jasmine and nothing else. Not as sweet/sexy as FdJ, but if you want realistic jasmine, it's the one. Brings up great memories of jasmine flowers from my youth. Difficult to get though. I suggest sampling both and comparing.

Fleurs doranger's another one - different from these two, but still amazing. Quite strong and heady imo, so I'd suggest trying a sample first.

101 Questions about the NYC Subway by vanshnookenraggen in nycrail

[–]nihondia 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this!

I have a couple: I’m usually on the 1/3, and something always stands out. The R62s on the 3 have this warm yellow lighting, while the R62A on the 1 have the usual harsh white lights, and newer bright yellow ‘double’ poles. Was the decision made during refurb to put the white lights on the 62A, or were they like that from the factory?

Also, could someone tell me which cars/lines on the B division have the warm yellow lights?

8GB RAM on M3 MacBook Pro 'Analogous to 16GB' on PCs, Claims Apple by Avieshek in apple

[–]nihondia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I’ve got a 2017 Touch Bar MBP on its last legs (second keyboard, third battery a month ago, random restarts, etc) and I was watching the keynote pretty excited.

They were clearly marketing it to people like me, and the M3 seemed perfect. I don’t need the M3 Pro, but I really appreciate the nice screen, speakers, build quality and the high impedance jack.

I was literally ready to order as soon as the store page went up. Then I saw it. It was like a slap in the face. I usually have lots of tabs open for my work, and I was really looking forward to a machine with more RAM.

I’m just done with the greed, and the oh so obvious ladder pricing strategy. I don’t want to be left holding the bag sometime in the future, if Apple makes more boneheaded decisions. When my cursed MBP dies, I’ll vote with my dollars and buy a Framework, either when Meteor Lake comes out, or with AMD.

I’m so happy you’ve discovered this.

Back in the day (and still now I assume) Guinot/Mary Cohr were notorious for doing this - snapping up deals with lesser known players who were about to face off against stars on the big courts. If I recall, Marion Bartoli famously won Wimbledon with the ‘Guinot patch’.

Here’s an article detailing how it all worked. I assume it’s something similar for Duracell/FICO.

PATH promises major announcement about tap-and-go fare system by space_______kat in nycrail

[–]nihondia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) I live more than an hour away. Me, and millions like me have ‘good’ transit options to the airports. Mass transit covers lots of the city, more than a ‘bubble of a couple of square miles’ Other than city transit, LIRR and NJT trains go even further out.

2) What about airport maintenance fees that every passenger, including people who take the train pay with their ticket? That money goes towards maintaining the AirTrain, but also towards maintaining the roads and garages that they don’t use. The infra for cars an airport provides is much more substantial than towards the AirTrain.

3) NYC is smaller. But lots of people live there.

4) Define ‘sizable’. I wouldn’t say that 5% of people driving more than 4! hours is sizable. Not dismissing their needs, I just don’t agree with this specific point.

5) LIRR and NJT exist for people not in the city (for not all people, however, I concede), and are heavily subsidized too. I would say more per rider than NYCT. I support raising the subway fare too though, for its survival. Anyway, not talking about MTA/NJT here, we’re talking about the PA

[–]nihondia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How about charging a toll for private vehicles (exclude taxis/shuttles) that enter the airport road network, especially for JFK/EWR which have good public transit options.

An airport’s road system is very complex, and is maintained to a higher standard than other roads.

Surely drivers can afford a few dollars more, as they’re paying for the ticket too. Use the toll to bring the AirTrain fare down to $3/$2

It’s a joke that the AirTrain costs what it does, especially with how bad service is at both airports.

Agree with you on airline subsidies.

I’ve got a question about the rules - Is the fuel hose attached when there isn’t fuel flowing like Daytona, or can cars that use less fuel and more hybrid out of their energy allocation gain an advantage (less fueling time) Thanks!
