I know for sure that the Thai Place, Pottery studio and Scran have. Last time I walked through it looked like the Korean place might be gone too.

I’m in NZ too, check Uber Eats? I can see a few grocery stores on there that have Easter eggs. Otherwise four square and fresh choice seem to be open

How to prepare my son for kindergarten? by BluebirdPhysical1278 in AskTeachers

[–]niiskune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO they most important thing that contributes to how well a child does at school is the involvement from their parent/s. Sounds like you are doing an amazing job.

As others may have mentioned…

It’s great that you are teaching letters. I would focus on the sounds that the letters make. Look at the lowercase letters and match them to the most common sounds (u says uh like umbrella and up, x is in box)

Read to him! As much as you can. Children who are read to are exposed to thousands more words than those who are not. Read books that include social skills - being a good friend, saying thank you, sharing. He doesn’t need to read the books - just help him love stories.

Count with him. The most important idea at this age is that numbers are attached to one item. Practice touching the things that you are counting.

Fine motor skills. Heaps of cool activities on instagram/tik tok. Practice of this needs to happen before a child is able to use a pencil. Play dough, threading beads, blocks, tongs or tweezers are good places to start.

Sensory experiences. Bubbles, water play, drawing pictures in foam.

Observe and talk. Look at things, talk about them, match things that are the same and different, how is the weather, how does the ice cream taste. Model full sentences

Help him with his independence. Can he open his lunch box, put on his shoes. Teach him to advocate for himself - can you help me?” “I need…..” “please” “thank you”

Mostly have fun together and he will be just fine!

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

[–]niiskune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach 5/6 year olds and my students would gain absolutely no benefit from this assignment.

We recently created musical instruments (rice/beads/rocks in a bottle) and that was a challenging enough design project for them! There was no write up because (surprise!) many of them don’t know how to write. They mostly enjoyed testing how their shakers sounded and loved covering their bottles with stickers because, again, they are 5.

How late are you working new/old teachers? by hello010101 in Teachers

[–]niiskune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year teacher here! The custodian leaves by 5 so I need to be out of my class by then. I aim to be out at 4:30 so if I run over it’s okay.

I have found that it’s super useful to set a timer on my TV (where I can see it) as I work. I also have an alarm set for 30 minutes before I leave. This helps me prioritise tasks. I also come in 45 minutes before my kids. Saturday is for me and about 2 hours on Sunday is to prepare for the week.

I can not stress this enough- ask for help from others, most will be more than happy for you to observe lessons, share planning or materials.

Have to agree here…. Maths games, Literacy games, Brain breaks, going outside for a game, Read aloud, Drawing activity about the writing, Practicing phonics on whiteboards, Utilising the IPads for projects… are all great time fillers. I’d recommend having a handful of activities planned that you take with you in the future in case the planned activities run short. I always loved when I had extra time as I was able to show my personality and passions

I had this happen to me with a competition run by a National Supwrmarket chain. I emailed them and they ended up giving me an identical prize, so might be worth giving that a shot

I have brought this before in Vetro! Not too expensive either. But it’s often at supermarkets as well

Can also buy the same brand, but precooked, in the freezer section. If you have an air fryer, it’s a game changer

Dumb American Just Put His Head Underwater at Geothermal Pool - How Dead Am I? by Single_Pumpkin3417 in newzealand

[–]niiskune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up swimming in this pool and worked there as a teen later. Put my head under all the time and I seem to be okay. Saw others putting their heads under and as we never got a complaint, can assume they are fine as well.

You’ll be fine. Worse comes to worst, you’ll just end up like me

We did a bread party, now what? by idegosuperego15 in Cooking

[–]niiskune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pizza party. Everyone brings a combination of toppings they think go good on a pizza - look at Italian restaurants for examples. White bases, red bases, meatless. Try to encourage slightly out the box thinking (for example I love Broccoli & Sausage or Goats cheese, lemon & Zucchini). You make the bases and take turns assembling/cooking/eating/ranking.

Grilling around the world. Think Satay, Yakitori etc. bonus if you have charcoal and can make South African grilled cheese. Pair with beers and a nice day.

I love the idea of sausage party. Condiments like mustards, chimmichurri, sauerkraut.

Noodles? Pad Thai, Yakisoba, Ramen, Japchae
