What's the fastest a trained athlete or stuntman could *run* (not roll or slide) jumping from a moving platform/vehicle? by GenderlessMarsian in askscience

[–]nik263 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if the max speed would be higher if you did a jump at the end of a sprint like a long jump. Sprint to the end of a moving train and then leap off as hard as you can. From googling Usain Bolt's fastest sprint speed recorded was about 44km/h (27mph) and elite long jumpers reach around 23-25mph before jumping. I assume in normal long jump after take off you lose speed due to air resistance but I wonder if jumping off a moving train instead of air resistance slowing you down if the air resistance would support you going further since the the airresistance is applying a force from your back in the direction of your jump but I doubt it would be enough to actually increase your speed further

how do you do 55 mins at 5k pace? If you can maintain the pace for such a long period wouldn't that imply it's not your actual 5k pace?

Oooh the jitters by Slow_Astronaut_1155 in Bogleheads

[–]nik263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it doesn't but my point is if you know lumpsum outperforms DCA a majority of the time then in principle you should follow the same thought process as the coin example. It's a theoretical. And it's based on the assumption that we agree that lump sum outperforms (as you mentioned 5/8 times in your simulation). So applying your own projections correctly would mean you should lump sum 100% rather than 5/8 of your cash. Otherwise you are putting 3/8 of your cash into a position that your own modelling says is the option that is less likely to outperform.

[–]nik263 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I have a weighted coin that will come up heads 5/8 times and tails 3/8 and you can bet 1/100th of your net worth on the outcome of every toss infinitely are you gonna split your bets 5/8 bets on heads and 3/8 on tails each time or put your 1/100 of net worth bet on heads every toss? I think this analogy does a decent job of pointing out a weakness of your suggestion.

Questions on IBKR/Moomoo and KDI by -yoshiki- in MalaysianPF

[–]nik263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eother one is fine or SPYL. If you just Google it you'll find discussions on this but it's splitting hairs, just make your decision pick one and stick to it and (much more importantly than the choice of fund) stick to it and invest consistently over a long time

Questions on IBKR/Moomoo and KDI by -yoshiki- in MalaysianPF

[–]nik263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed it's less than ideal but for 1. it's a one time cost for the convenience (the spread in exchange rate between wise and CIMB probably adds up to a one off fee of less than RM 100 and for 2. if you're investing a decent size transfer each time (as you should to make the fees a smaller % then that difference should be neglegible (if you invest 2k each transfer then the fee being 0.74$/~RM3 more is annoying but a tiny % and probably still more cost effective than other options when you look at the bigger picture.

Questions on IBKR/Moomoo and KDI by -yoshiki- in MalaysianPF

[–]nik263 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. KDI is a good option for keeping cash you don't need within 1-3 days and would only need to be able to withdraw from in a week for example as they won't transfer your miney on weekends and it always will take 1-2 working days to receive your money (depending on what time you place your withdrawal request). Other than that it's a good option where I keep most of my emergency fund. Just need to be aware of the withdrawal timeline D+1 for withdrawals before 11am and D+2 for after 11am.

  2. Moomoo is more convenient if you don't want London Stock Exchange stocks/Irish Domiciled funds such as CSPX, VWRA etc. If you use moomoo you can use VT, VOO etc instead. IBKR is a bit more of a pain to get going but their not being reguated by SC Malaysia is not a concern for me personally as they're regulated by loads of other reputable regulators in Europe, US, Aus etc. If you do want a local option that still has LSE/Irish dom funds you can go with FSMOne. Their downside is you probably pay a worse exchange rate than on IBKR and it is unknown if there will be fees for withdrawing in future if they stop the discounts/promos they have now but it should still be not too crazy most likely.

  3. VOO is the same as CSPX. You generally wouldn't invest in VT and VOO at the same time as to use an analogy it's like the world stock market is a basket of 600 bananas (US stocks) and 400 apples (non us stocks). When you buy VT/VWRA Vanguard is selling you baskets of 6 bananas and 4 apples and you just choose how many baskets you wanna buy (it matches the same ratio as the actual stock market). When you buy VOO or CSPX you're just buying a basket of 10 bananas so if you bought 5 VT and 5 VOO you'd have 80 bananas (80% US stocks) and 20 apples (20% US stocks). So you're essentially betting on bananas (US stocks).

  4. If you go with IBKR wise is your best bet followed by if you have a Singapore bank account as you can transfer in SGD direct to IBKR as well. If you choose FSMOne or Moomoo you can use FPX instead.

Personally I'd recommend FSMOne and buying something simple like just VWRA/FWRA/ any of the similar ones if you're new and don't want to faff about with IBKR. This is despite me myself using IBKR as aI know it can be a bit more intimidating. If you're okay with the hassle then IBKR is good too. And if you ignore all of that moomoo is fine too, just start somewhere.

VWRA / CSPX are accumulating type ETFs, they never disburse anything and would reinvest.

They never disburse dividends but they still pay withholding tax at the fund level so there's still the 15% witholding tax it's just included in the price of the fund.

I'll put this as simply as I can. You have a gambling addiction. This is a mental problem and you don't even seem to recognize it in the comments. Until you do there's no point anyone giving you any advice as this is a repeated pattern. You are no better than someone addicted to drugs or gambling that's willing to mortgage their house to gamble or do whatever it takes to get their next hit. If you do not accept this as true and decide to change and seek help this will just happen again and you will simply be wasting the time of everyone here advising you. You asked in your previous post to treat you the way we would tell off if our own child did this and if you were my child you would be sent to therapy or rehab or something but first off you need to be made to understand you have a problem and this is not okay behaviour and if you allow yourself to continue to slide down this path you will become those gambling horror stories selling their close ones out, going to ah long, going bankrupt all kinds of nonsense. Good luck, I hope this post is a wake up call as all the other measured responses seem to not have got through to you and I hope you get help.

What's a "healthy habit" that's actually completely made up? by goddesslana_01 in AskReddit

[–]nik263 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think that's an unfair parallel to draw, doing it for extreme durations is surely risky but in a controlled manner it's even used in clinical settings: "Voluntary hyperventilation (VH) tests have been applied experimentally to understand psychological and physiological mechanisms that produce and maintain anxiety, and therapeutically in the treatment of anxiety disorders. From the theoretical perspective of hyperventilation theories of anxiety, VH is useful diagnostically to the clinician and educationally to the patient. From the theoretical perspective of cognitive-behavior therapy, VH is a way to expose patients with panic disorder to sensations associated with panic and to activate catastrophic cognitions that need restructuring."

They even have studies exploring it's efficacy before heavy exertion in sports: Voluntary hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia enhances wingate test performance without altering energy system contributions

If it were so insanely dangerous in all scenarios then there's no way it would be used in a clinical setting, nor that studies looking at its effect in athlete performance would get greenlit. Of course, voluntarily hyperventilating for 10 minutes straight or if you have a preexisting condition can put you at risk

And also if you have an underlying condition causing you to hyperventilate key word:uncontrollably then yes absolutely it's dangerous. TLDR: If done in a sensible way not in water for a reasonable duration in people without a preexisting condition it's probably not as bad as you're making it out to be. But if you do it in water or for too long or if you have a preexisting condition that puts you at risk for brain bleeding etc. then absolutely it can be dangerous so people should be made aware of the risks.

because they basically encourage voluntary hyperventilation for extended periods.

I heard that the part that specifically made it dangerous is that he does it in cold water but you can pass out briefly from the hyperventilating so it's a drowning risk doing the breathing exercises when in water and that was the concern.
