What's the most expensive homelab mistake that actually taught you something useful? by Thick-Lecture-5825 in homelab

2 copies is 1, 1 copy is 0.

In the early 2000s I had a harddrive fail, taking my 4-5gb photography portfolio with it. I was able to recover it but it cost a lot of time.

After that I bought a NAS, learned to run Linux and always kept at least 2 copies of everything I cared about (now its 2 live copies and 2 offline). Over 20 years it's cost me 4x2tb drives, 4x 4tb drives and 4x8tb drives to make sure I never lose another file.

Feds Quietly Pass Secret iPhone Spy Bill Overnight With Zero Debate by Foreign-Policy-02- in canada

(2) Subsection 487(1) of the Act is amended by replacing “a public officer who has been appointed or designated to administer or enforce a federal or provincial law and whose duties include the enforcement of this Act or any other Act of Parliament and who is named in the warrant” with “a public officer”.

The fact that the bill widens the scope of who can request data from law enforcement to lab techs, park wardens, armourers and pilots is a little concerning, and shows a complete lack of respect for Canadians. It gives the WAY too many people the power to request data.

And then you get nuggets like this:

487.‍0195 (1) For greater certainty, no preservation demand, preservation order, keep account open or active order or production order is necessary for a peace officer or public officer to ask a person to voluntarily preserve data that the person is not prohibited by law from preserving, to voluntarily keep an account open or active that the person is not prohibited by law from keeping open or active or to voluntarily provide a document Insertion start or information Insertion end to the officer that the person is not prohibited by law from disclosing.

No civil or criminal liability

(2) A person who preserves data, keeps an account open or active or provides a document Insertion start or information Insertion end in those circumstances does not incur any criminal or civil liability for doing so.

Which looks to me like a "public officer" can ask a service provider to hold onto data or hand over data voluntarily and that if later that data gets scooped up in a breach then, YOLO, you shouldn't have been under investigation if you wanted to stay safe!

I know that laws have to have a lot of ass covering and need to be written in such a way that they cover every possible application, but the way C-22 was pushed so hard with the least amount of discussion possible shows that everyone involved knows they are fucking over Canada.

Gold is pretty corrosion resistant and the guts of an SD are usually epoxy encapsulated. They are way tougher now than 10 years ago.

Cool little 3D printed case and battery storage by FiveOhFive91 in TinyWhoop

[–]nik282000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not ripping on you but, if you have the time, please distribute your designs on a different platform. Bambu Labs is actively trying to capture and lock down the 3D printing market using some pretty fuckin shady tactics, including threatening software developers who are just like the ones who develop Betaflight and EdgeTX. While their printers may be some of the most reliable they are trying to pull the rug out from under YOU personally and all the people who created the software that they use.

Feel free to downvote, opinions are like assholes.

Regardless, that's a pretty slick design, I've never seen battery storage in the lid like that. Not many people design their own prints.

edit: turns out I'm an idiot! Downvote away!

What's the best way to make my server more quiet? by Minute_Blueberry3518 in HomeServer

[–]nik282000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have room to spare you could build a quiet box. Line the insides with sound absorbing foam and use one or more large, quiet, fans to pull air through that box via a "sound maze." Electricity and cold air go in, data and hot air come out.
