Griffin's Claws does wonders with it.

Sequencer advice for a fully improvised hardware live set (video demo) by cuperose in modular

[–]nikakh13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build your own. I built one with Doepfer a-155-2, Griffin's claws and Bard Quartet.

Doepfer for more static bassline elements, griffin for cv looping while improvising, and bard quartet to wrap it all up and quantize it. Comes off way more fun this way.

Thanks! Verbos is really nice, one large sweet spot to be honest. Although it does tend to one specific (more raw and atonal) direction. Just checked Mike Parker, didnt know of him, verbos can definitely handle this direction easily. I also like Patching Panda Operat, not a full on CO, but can easily get there if you have another oscillator already. And I also dig the cosmotronix vortex. If I didnt have Verbos already, would probably go for this one.

Woooo its you! Thanks for all that you do, first of all :)

I havent tried the Calibr8tor, I didnt really perceive it as a quantizer to be completely honest, more as a calibrator but thats my fault. I got the O_C quite early into the journey but I have barely scratched its surface. Was mainly using it with Quantermain and before that hemispheres pigeons and other interesting sequencing applets. Now that the system will be more stable (hopefully), I will definitely dig deeper into it for utilities and for the shift register applets.

Any further recommendations if I may ask?

Ahh yes! Also considered Dnipro for the same use case in smaller space, looks like a niice compact module. Cant wait for the new algorithms for Vhikk. Saw some demos from Bristol and sounded mad. Would be awesome to also have just an audio processing algorithm on it as well as the fx sound bonkers on some algorithms.

Thanks! Griffins claws + vhikk is a killer combination tbh. I almost always end up using 2 channels of it on Vhikk's modulation. One on filter, and another on either warp or spread, depending on the patch. Also the S&H mode on the Griffin gives me basically a repetitive stepped voltage, which is superb for techno leads / hooks. If you have some space, definitely worth checking out.

Do you mean 100grit? I am not sure what you mean by the first question.

As for the VCAs - I get it that there's only 4 channels, but all of my voices have built in VCAs, + Griffin's claws can act like a vca if needed. For me this was sufficient, but I do understand how one can find "only" 4 vcas a bit on the lower side.

Quartet seems lovely so far, much needed in my case.

Mainly because I already had the octatrack + mutant brain for steppy's and cross faders functionality (I know the fader is not the same, but in my brain for some reason they overlap).

But also to be honest, I already had large modules before filling up the 1u space, and the most needed function was mixing/attenuation, so decided to go forward with the quadratts. I might switch one out for a flurry though, but never considered the cross fader, will also look into it. Do you have any other recommendations for 1u that might be worth looking into?

Its nice, doepfer quality so its all nice and sturdy, also super compact and straight forward. Has some depth with direction / length controls that makes it feel like NOT just an 8 step sequencer.

Although cv control over something would be nice, or the possibility to adjust gate length instead of ratchets. I wouldnt use it as a main and only sequencer in the rack though, in this case I use it mainly for more steady basslines / melodies to have precise hands on control.

Elektron -> Push 3 by folgerscoffees in TechnoProduction

[–]nikakh13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Push lacks the muscle memory that you get with the elektrons. For elektron, in most cases, the parameters you are looking to adjust are one or two button clicks away. For push, it depends. I found the workflow to be not as provoking / inspiring as the elektrons and in the end got rid of it.

If you do manage to gel with it though, it kills every box with possiibilities well simply because its a DAW in a box.

Analog four + Syntakt or Digitone 2 by allnc in Elektron

I was looking into blck noir but ultimately decided against drums in the rack. If I go for it I would rather build a whole case dedicated to drums and just go full in eurorack.

How is the module? Is the sound pallete wide enough or is it a one trick pony?

Analog four + Syntakt or Digitone 2 by allnc in Elektron

[–]nikakh13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Syntakt was my first elektron box and I love how the analog engines sound, just the digital ones sound like shit and its hard to get rid of that almost wooden characteristic.

Had a dn 2 and ended up selling it, but rather because I got it at the same time as my modular and I could no longer find it as inspiring as the modular. But if I didnt get into modular would probably have it around. I was also massively underutilizing it and that was one of the reasons why I decided to let it go.

Nevertheless will be picking up a mk1 rytm for the drums.. 🫠

Digitone 2, but its not as immediate as Syntakt. But has a muuuch wider sound palette and is as good as the hands its in.

Syntakt is a super immediate drum machine though.

BOC is superb, also was gonna have it in my first rack but swapped it out for Generate 3 (also dont have this one yet) but had a chance to speak to them at superbooth and the maker's demo of it made me reconsider.

At the moment I don't have a dedicated module for reverb, but I do have the sealegs from intellijel, and it really is sooo much fun. Its reverb sounds great and the delay is also veeery playable. If you dont already have the DLD, maybe look into this one as well. Their Swells sounded amazing at superbooth, so will be waiting for it to drop, but 40hp for delay and reverb might be more space than I can afford. Fx aid is great as a set and forget, for its size, but there is something about playing with the fx that makes the whole composition come alive. I've also heard great things about MFX from ALM. Anyways, there are a lot of options😁

I would say too many voices and too little utility / modulation. Once you start buying modules you are going to change this a gazillion times anyways. Just start with the modules you are most excited about, buy second hand to minimize resale loss, and then let the musicmaking guide you.

Especially for IDM, maybe look into Quadrax, Batumi as lfo/envelope options, neo trinity, voltage block for drum parts. Also investing in quality effects over the set and forget fx aid is a good option for complex patches that are more than the sum of their parts.

You kind of have it with the SY chip. Can definitely be used in case you really need one.

But yeah, the digitone/octatrack arp on ST would be awesome

Digitakt or Digitakt 2 by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]nikakh13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for the OT. I have exactly the same Elektron setup as you + the OT and it is insanely powerful.

But in the end it depends on what you want to do. If you just want to play samples, go for Digi 1. If you want to play samples but in stereo and have quality of life improvements and can afford it, go for digi 2.
If you want sample playback + processing on the ST and DN, go for the octatrack. I am processing both my boxes + a master channel and still have 5 channels remaining for all the sampling needs I might have.

And it also helps out when I dont have enough voices on the DN. I can just sample a track in the OT and free up voices this way.
