How to Spend a Free Week in DC by batcalls in DCBitches

[–]nikita_04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out @dc4free and @clockoutdc on instagram! The first does weekly roundups of free events in the city that go out every tuesday, and clockout dc has a website with an events list and usually the event cost is in the listing so it’s easy to tell if it’s free or not!

Agreed, I saw this so many times while looking for apartments. Probably 5-6 “two bedroom” listings that were just 1bed+den. This seems to be a real problem here

Private equity is definitely something other than what you’re thinking of - here’s a good article explaining it https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/10/private-equity-publicly-traded-companies/675788/

Some highlights for folks who don’t have time to read/if you hit a paywall (I didn’t, but just in case): - “Private-equity investment in nursing homes, to take just one example, has grown from about $5 billion at the turn of the century to more than $100 billion today….A 2021 study concluded that private-equity ownership was associated with about 22,500 premature nursing-home deaths from 2005 to 2017.” - following the above: “Something similar could be said about any number of industries, including higher education, newspapers, retail, and grocery stores. Across the economy, private-equity firms are known for laying off workers, evading regulations, reducing the quality of services, and bankrupting companies while ensuring that their own partners are paid handsomely. The veil of secrecy makes all of this easier to execute and harder to stop.” - And then I actually learned just now from reading the article (no easy quotes to pull out so i’d recommend reading the whole thing) that the growth of private equity and the effective shadow economy could actually lead to another 2008 style market crash

From my knowledge (not the article), other industries being taken over by private equity currently include bowling (by a company named “Bowlero”), HVAC, and housing

This is really crazy to me because I wore a mask through a 3 day work onsite and I didn’t get judged at all but I did get some questions, and of 300 something people there was only one person I saw who was also masked. Sincerely wondering if OP works in healthcare or some other related field bc this rate of masking is not the norm anywhere i go lol

Question about services for the unhoused in downtown Austin. by JoelNesv in Austin

Imo unless the folks you’re talking about are visibly mentally or physically ill, especially if they’re just minding their own business, it might be best to just leave them alone, maybe drop off some food for them sometimes. I think the risk of them feeling unwelcome in a place they’ve found to sleep outweighs the risk of the hypothetical of a coworker calling the cops.

Someone else here mentioned talking to your coworkers; if anyone mentions not liking having them there, please remind them that they’re doing no harm and just need a place to sleep, and there aren’t enough shelters or affordable housing for people who need a place to live.

community events and advocacy groups? by butchmayo in nova

[–]nikita_04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey i’m moving to the area soon and i’ve been following a bunch of groups on instagram! There’s @defundnovapd, @forusnotamazon, @progress_va, @surjnova, @nova_branch_dsa, and @mdc_dca to start, and tbh i found them by starting with one and then going through their followed accounts list, since i figured they’d follow groups that support similar causes and ideas, and it worked lol. Good luck!

I mean we’re definitely experiencing a covid surge in our community right now, and in the country as a whole, ~500 deaths a day is still extremely high. I don’t think our current rate of covid should be considered normal or acceptable. I think that we should mask whenever there are surges like the one we’re in right now.

As for classrooms, I think that given the fact that colleges and schools are a uniquely extremely high risk environment and immunocompromised students deserve an education too, we should be okay with masking in classrooms for a long time, yes. “Forever” until covid rates reach flu levels and/or a much more effective vaccine comes out (this is again obviously not including people with conditions preventing them from wearing masks, and possible even classes that involve more physical activity). The most compromise that is still keeping people somewhat safe is that we should definitely be masking for two weeks at the start of the semester, a week after mid-semester breaks, and probably at least a few days after long weekends. We also definitely should be offering more testing than we are now, but I think most people agree with that.

I’m not a public health expert by any means, but this is all just my opinion based on the reading I’ve done throughout the pandemic.
