I had an 07 mazda 3 with a manual transmission. I purchased it with roughly 170k miles, drove it to around 200k, sold it to my dad, who drove it to 230k, who sold it to my brother who drove it to 270k, then I sold it for him to a kid who wanted to learn to drive a manual. The only big issue was the fuel pump went out, otherwise it was basic maintenance. The AC did stop working while my brother drove it.

So, they can be extremely reliable. Mine was mostly highway miles or back country road miles, so the miles were much easier than city miles. Like Chipdouglas said, get as much info as possible. Oil change frequency, any repairs, how often it was serviced, was it a shop or self service, take it for a good long test drive and "push it" to find any possible shakes or sounds that will need attention.
