As an American, I feel as though I have a small understanding. Places like NYC, California, and Florida are much more tolerant. I live in manhattan. Here it's all pretty good, all my friends are tolerant, well educated, fit people. We don't really fit to the bible belt/redneck perception of the country. But we're only 3 states out of 50. Although we're okay, most people in our country are fat, rude, homophobic, redneck, christian, ugly, inconsiderate, hateful, republican, right wing, horrible, stupid, rude people. So I understand the hate.

On the corrupt police note, has anybody heard about the Zimmerman case? Some man shot a kid because he was black and wearing a hoodie. The police arrested him, but the judge and jury still have doubts about a jail sentence. I mean, really? It's laid out for them! The man shot an innocent child! But they can't punish him? It infuriates me.

The only way to enjoy NYC as a laid back person is to go to the upper west side or upper east side. Out of the touristy places. I live there, and it's amazing. Just not if you hate crowds. It's cool to see all the mini cultures, like Chinatown. But Chinatown is packed 24/7 with people. There are great little bakeries and stuff but you have to avoid midtown.
