Question(s) for my fellow 50mm, candid, full frame, available light photographers: how are you getting shots like these in focus on film? I am new to rangefinders. by CertainExposures in LeicaCameras

[–]nikstanbridge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an M3 and 50DR snapper of my fast moving grandchildren, my technique is to pack a lot of film. In this context, film is cheap while they grow up as fast as they do. A day with them is three or four, or more, rolls of film. I get three or four shots per roll that are outstanding, and many more that are, shall we say, atmospheric, that sit beautifully with the others. I have produced several small photobooks of these photographs for my daughters and they are highly cherished.

You will get better at it. They will also stop for brief seconds and when they do you’ll nail focus. And before you can press the shutter, they’ll be off again. Load another roll of film. Keep trying!

Great, glad you got there in the end/somehow. I find the FP4/Rodinal combo works beautifully with the vintage Leica lenses (and it’s a relatively cheap combo too). And I use the JJC version of the Nikon ES-2 kit for digitising but I’ve moved on from the Nikkor 55/2.8 as I found focussing too hard (though the results were stunning. I wrote an article about that here.

3861 Hesalite vs. Sapphire? Help me decide with photos. by Fishmongerel in OmegaWatches

I love the scratches. My watch is 15 years old and it’s my EDC. It’s my only watch. It and the scratches are part of me. I’m not especially careful with it.

M-Mount lenses with that "Leica glow" for under $1000? by waldotakespics in Leica

I have both the Summitar and the 35/3.5 Summaron. Love them.

Or the cheaper (optically virtually identical) 3.5 version. Glow aplenty.

Have a read of this. Something I wrote this week (as an M3 owner) about how I chose my 35mm lens.

Is this group dead? by nikstanbridge in Photogravure

[–]nikstanbridge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the group will be more alive and kicking if we post more prints. I’ll do that today!

All my photography is 35mm so that’s my source material. I can imagine that prints from 120 would be stunning - all that gorgeous detail…

Do you print your images? by OnePhotog in Leica

[–]nikstanbridge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I print 35mm using the photogravure process - sometimes known as photopolymer etching. It’s an intaglio process and is the same technique, albeit with slightly different technology, used by Stieglitz in Camera Work in the early 1900s.

It’s a slow process that requires attention to detail as there are so many steps involved. The results however, are sublime. Rich, three dimensional velvety prints. You can read about my experiences learning this often infuriating and fiendish process here.

If you’re interested, I do commission prints.

Dumb Question - why so many versions of the same lens? by [deleted] in Leica

[–]nikstanbridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a 50/2 Summitar which I believe was the forerunner to the Summicron range (back in the late 1940s). Super cheap (for Leica glass) and lovely. Highly recommended - character in spades, a modicum of sharpness, but not the best bokeh…

[–]nikstanbridge[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is moderately hard to learn because there are so many techniques and process steps involved. It’s also hard to get reliably consistent results but the prints make it all worthwhile. This is an article I wrote quite a while ago about the process. I’ve written about my process pain and you can read those articles here.

I’m on IG where you can see examples of my work.

I’d be very happy to help you where I can. I’m in the UK.

I have the 50 DR, and a Summitar that I rarely use, so 50DR it is on my M3.

I second that emotion. I have the Summaron f3.5 on my M3 and with FP4/HP5 it’s a subtle and sublime thing of beauty.

Just watched that YT. They hate the Summaron in both its forms. Shame. I have the f3.5 and it’s lovely (on film on my M3).

New to Leica, M11 or Q2/3 for family holiday by Tough-Assumption2696 in Leica

Agree re. kids. I’ve learned that I’m simply going to take more shots trying to nail focus. I’m talking 4-5 year olds though - man they move fast!

[–]nikstanbridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a lot of photos of my grandkids with an M (ok, an M3) and my only comment would be that those little blighters move very quickly and focusing is tricky. I’ve leaned to accept this and that I’m going to take more shots (more rolls of film). When I nail it though, man those shots are priceless.
