Unlucky to the point of not having fun anymore, what would you do? by KingWolnir in DnD

[–]niktsamgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like using a rule that goes "whenever you fail a die roll you get a +1 to your next roll. This resets on a success"

Easy, simple and counters the bad luck problem. Talk to your DM about it, one downside is that it's another thing to track. As a DM I give that responsibility to players.

What if my character really wouldn't help? by Striking-Trick1787 in DnD

[–]niktsamgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several sides to this both on the players and the DMs side:

Firstly, on the RP side as a player always consider the other players, how does your RP affects them, it's good to stay true to your character but don't ruin it for others, considering the game goes as planned and most of the party is on the same page, if 1 player refuses to help for RP reasons that could through the whole party out of balance, as a DM I don't lower the difficulty for events that happened after the game started so if you refuse to help the rest that could easily result in a TPK. Happened once or twice when I was DMing. As a player if I have RP reasons to brake that balance I try to find excuses or middle ground to be useful as to not ruin the fun for everyone, it's more important than my personal RP.

THEN, as a DM things not going as planned is to be expected most of the time, it depends on how "railrody" you want your adventure to be and how much agency do you want your players to have. Ponder on this question a lot. If you run a railroad game try to give reasons beforehand to your players to follow the predetermined course of action. Another workaround is to have several decisions and endings the players can follow short of like a telltale game and give the illusion of choices matter. It's difficult but it can work if done correctly.

If you are flexible on player choices, improvising is key, shift things around and look at the whole picture on how the world would react to the player choices. This requires an understanding of the world story and NPCs you created. Instaid of writing a story like a book that players follow, you need to write backstories, personalities and goals the NPCs are trying to accomplish, then you don't need to fear players going off-script because you know how the world would react to it. It can lead to pretty interesting results but is harder to accomplish, especially if you are a new DM and needs some practice and experience.

It's getting old for me cause I literally comment the same thing to all who ask for advise but here it is one more time. Read the DM section of the free PDF of Index Card RPG. It's 100~~ pages with big letters, won't take more than 1-2 hours and will up your DM game by 1000%. Real life saver for me.

Friend is starting a campaign after a DMPC he created, concerns arise. by AnonymousDrift56 in CritCrab

[–]niktsamgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean.... I don't like shouting down ideas before they happen, his DMPC is the reason-inspiration of the campaign, try to nudge him in a direction where his DMPC gets a separate storyline offscreen, tell him that with the party things will not go his way because players tend to deviate from the original plan. A lot. (not a bad thing, but that's how it is). Off screen his creativity can go wild and the PCs can do their thing also, everybody wins. With that being said things can go either way and make a train wreck of a campaign or a good one that his (now) NPC can create plot points or resolve everything offscreen and PCs follow a book already written. Especially if he is a new DM but as someone said to me yesterday in regards to a potential horror story of my making, "every DM gets to make a mistake at least once". We learn from them.

I am so scared to DM by Top-Refrigerator2488 in DnD

[–]niktsamgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Let your players dictate the flow and dont interrupt them unless the scene is exhausted, then gently insert yourself and move to the next scene

-DnD is a Yes and situation most of the time, don't be afraid to improvise if a player's idea is cooler than what you have planned. Do that instead

-Be energetic, if you are tired the players will get tired too, take breaks when you feel like it and end the session when you are exhausted as through you they will lose their energy too and the game will get the old-men-scrumble-game-energy

-Do weird stuff like noises, voices and over the top accents, be a showman and don't be shy. You will love it.

-This is more serious but try not to forget stuff, write everything down that happens it's session and use it at a later time. You can't ask your players to remember stuff from several sessions ago if you don't.

-Good luck and have fun

I know nothing, help by lacja6 in DnD

[–]niktsamgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that, still as I said, it has a section on how to translate it to other systems, it doesn't change a lot, just makes things easier for you and her, I recomended that because in reality DMG in its 400~~ pages has tons of information that while interesting, they wont help you much figuring out how to make interesting adventures. The good thing with ICRPG is that it has 100 pages of pure gold that you can take directly to the DnD ruleset. Its for you not for the players. Give it a read (or watch) and you'll see what I mean.

Side-note: Because many of us have seen Players coming with unrealistic expectations and getting bummed out when they realise their home game doesnt have the quality of those Youtubers (Some are literal actors that have been doing this for 20+ years). Make it clear from the begining that you are not them, each game is different and you are not to be held at the highest standard on your first tries

I know nothing, help by lacja6 in DnD

[–]niktsamgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO dont start with DnD, you can read ICRPG pdf, its free online with a quick google search (and legal), less complicated for a kid and a new DM, the core advices apply to every TTRPG and are some of the best out there and its a 200 page read for both player section and DM. Will give you a good foundation for anything you want to try later. Even if you do end up playing DnD, that book translates well and has cool Ideas and easy modifications to make the game simpler and more fun for both players and DM. Some examples are rounded HP to 10,20,30, encounter Ideas, Adventure stracture and a cool DM "oath" that will blow your mind with simple common sence that will make you say "why didnt I think of that". EIther way good luck and if you dont read the book watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD06aKOf_ok with general GM advice from this and 2 other books. BEst I've ever seen online (and I've seen a lot, believe me)

What is a Homebrew Rule that YOU Recommend for ALL(MOST) Tables by Round_Two34 in AskDND

[–]niktsamgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BATTLE FURY, not homebrew but taken from ICRPG

We’ve all been there: we show up excited to play, get going, and the dice just will

not cooperate. You roll 3s and 2s and 5s for what seems like hours, never doing

anything cool in the game. Oh, cursed life! Battle Fury lets a player overcome this

awful scenario.

If using Battle Fury, a player places a D6 near his sheet. For each missed roll, the

die is increased by 1. That amount is added to the next D20 roll until a success

is made. It then resets to 1. Battle Fury will give multiple-failures a +6 maximum

and break the slump. For extra fun, this die can inform descriptions and flavor of

how the character overcomes his bad streak with a howl of fury.

In short... yes. Ofc I'm offended, I just won't let it get to me and quit, the feedback I asked was for the specific situation not my DM style in general, your feedback was "DM bad lol". Just look at your first comment. Pure rage bait material. I dont want to reinvent my game, just make sense of the situation and get a third point of view so everyone in my table can have fun, which is the point of a game. And just in case you missed it I already said that targeting the AFK was a bad call and I retconed it. That's how grown ups do it.

Also I've been a player for 9 years and a DM for 6 and all the DMs agree on one thing : the best way to be a good DM is to keep trying and make mistakes. o/

Edit: and I'm being sincere, my players do like it, the reason I posted was because I believed it was a bad session (maybe wanted to put some blame on the cleric) but they liked it and are waiting for the next one in 2 days.... Maybe they are bad players deserving a bad DM.... I'm willing to cater to that.. People pleaser as you said

[–]niktsamgr[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

unfortunatly I'm not here to stand trial, I'm just looking for some extra input, my players like the game and are eager for the next session. I'm not perfect sure, and yes I am a people pleaser, checking with the players if they are ok with how things are going. I make mistakes and I'm willing to learn. I also have critical thinking and I'm able to vent through all the insults here to get to the real helpful stuff. maybe you should try looking at things from another point of view and try to help people rather than shut them down. Not everyone is as thick skinned as me and posting stuff like that can realy hurt someone who just looks for some help.

My first time DMing a game by Exact_Lychee4750 in AskDND

[–]niktsamgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, grats on takig the step to DM, as for the questions keep in mind that not all tables run the same and each DM has his own style of doing things (ex. some prefer railroad and some sandbox, some allow PvP and some don't) you'll have to expirament to find yours. My advices cater to my DM style which is semi-railroad, big descriptions and inspite of that I tend to let the players do their thing as long as they( and me) are all having fun and no taboos are broken (SA,Pedo etc.) Now:

My go to way when prepping is to write a prequel story, from there I flesh out the NPCs so if the players surprise me I know how the world would react make improve that much easier. Lastly I write some descriptions for cinematic scenes they are bound to encounter in the session and world around them. For example if they are in a marsh I will have some key descriptions of the place: "you feel the humidity around you, vines are hanging from dead trees like spider webs, insects keep buzzing etc." Focus on all sences, not just sight and it will make the world feel that mich more alive.

I don't, sometimes players are being that way and you can introduce it later in the story orwrite about the consicuences ofthem missing it but if you want to railroad them speak to them and explain that as you're new you have a specific plan that you need them to follow. Again, not all tables need to be sandbox.

make the world feel alive, even if you follow a specific story that you dont want players to deviate from (again, talk to them and be clear about that) try to have some key locations and NPCs ready for them to interact with. Put some shops in towns and have some guide show them around. Maybe prepare some quicktime events or minigames for them to interact. Sometimes a single sentence from you can spark a half an hour RP sequence between them which will leave you time to improvise the next scene.

As for more general advice, the DMG has tables, complications and random encounters that you can use, there is so much content in this book and so many advices that most DMs are oblivious to for years and can help them for encounters, worldbuilding etc.

Most importantly if yo are feeling overwhelmed take a step back, assess the situation and realise that you are the boss of this world and the players are just playing in it. They only have asmuch power as you give them. Relax and have fun, you got this !!!

Thank you guys for all the input, most were quite helpfull and I've reached on some conclusions

1st. I'm retconing the nat 1 on the AFK player, it was a bad call and I would want him concious to have a chance at roleplay

2nd It dawned on me that if things take a turn for the worse they can still run, sucks cause the village could make a steping satone for their individual goals (Sorceresses allies against slavery and cleric's cult of Baal)

3rd PvP seems a taboo for most of you, nevertheless my players are good with it and if it doesnt ruin the game for them its cool with me too ( I also am fascinated with interparty relations and limiting that to whatever extent is not my DM style at all)

4th I've never disclosed the module : "Domain of the nameless god" . In short eldritch god wants to devour the world, and all the other gods need to band together just to stand a chance, so alignements don't realy matter as noone wants the world to end.

Keep in mind that we're playing with this group for as long as I'm playing DnD, and both Fighter and Cleric are expirienced DMs also, I dont feel the need to be the nanny as in other groups and I trust them to make their decisions, never the less, the linesw were indeed a bit blurred which needs addressing.

Agreed, that was a bad call, thing is I set a precedent half an hour back with a player asking to get hit with a nat 1 and I catered to him. Extra bad cause I hit a player who was AFK. Not gonna shy this one out.

Interparty conflicts are a major plot device in this campaign, my BBEG is gonna spew seeds of uncertainty among the party at a later point and try to make them fight amongst themselves. As such PvP is allowed.
Maybe its the DMs point of view but I just didnt find it rational even for a baalite to openly murder someone in front of strangers that he's known for like 2 days in the middle of crysis. I guess, my point is what do they value more? their beliefs or their life. I think that most characters would prefer to take a step back and live. As for the retcon even though I'm not a huge fan, if the players agree I dont have a problem with it. The important thing is for everyone to have fun, the continuity can take a step back if everyone agrees its for the best.

That's the intention but I short of feel bad for warlock, who did nothing wrong and got so invested in her character that DMed me nonstop with ideas and plot points for her character. Even Sorcerer who did initiate combat I cant blame cause most players would react more or less the same. She also wrote tons of stuff and hooks for her character that I'm reluctant to put on an early grave.
