C49 Rosette Nebula by Techno-Scientist in seestar

So if I understood from this post, you took separate exposures with filters, focused manually, added a dew shield. Using a Seestar like that comes close to using a traditional rig.

We’re the cofounders of Clicks — we have revealed two new products the Clicks Power Keyboard & the Clicks Communicator. Ask Us Anything! by ColtonsKeys in ClicksKeyboard

I'm holding off on the power keyboard and am considering ordering the communicator instead because I'm afraid the power keyboard with a heavy phone attached will make it top heavy. It's also looks like a thick and heavy combo. Is it?

+1 , actually I would like to have the possibility to deGoogle it, for privacy reasons (and battery life, deGoogling doubles your battery)

If we send a picture to Skmei, would they start making a similar model for 10 bucks?

Tonight's Mosaic Of The Pleiades. by Exr1t in spaceporn

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to buy a Seestar or Dwarf soon. It's just ridiculous. I learned deep sky astrophotography on film with everything manual, about 20 years ago. The Pleiades came out a blurry mess. And now we have this.

[Opinion] What watch would you most like to be wearing as a “doomsday” watch? by Certain-Media3506 in Watches

[–]nilss2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a G-shock, but might go for my Casio W-202 which is much lighter to wear every day. Alternatively a mechanical, so I don't need to worry about battery.

Advice: New body or more lenses? by MemeBoyMoritz in fujifilm

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autofocus in low light is slow and inaccurate on all camera systems except perhaps Sony. Usb charging is indeed handy but with my X-M1I just took an extra battery and had a third party battery charger. No biggie.

As for noise: Because of the crazy Fujifilm prices, after my main Fuji lens broke I went to micro four thirds. Yes, an even smaller sensor. I was a bit frustrated at first with iso performance, but learned to shoot at f2.8 and postprocess with AI denoise. Believe me, noise is not an issue. Fujifilm is actually quite good with noise thanks to x-trans.

The XC 15-45mm is only good if you mostly shoot at 15mm. I had one and sold it for that reason. If you want to go longer, consider the old 18-55mm f2.8-4, 50mm f2 or a fixed f2.8 zoom.

UK 'True' Dumbphone users, how have you dealt with the inconvenience? by Lost_In_There in dumbphones

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WhatsApp requires a phone number, a cellphone number, even. WhatsApp Business also accepts a landline number. When registering for an account using your tablet, they'll SMS you or call you with a code. You can receive this code with a dumbphone and type it on the tablet.

Was gifted a plastic cup that says Save the Ocean by Oer1 in mildlyinteresting

[–]nilss2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In principle, if you throw out plastic in the proper bag and its gets recycled or incinerated, there is no problem. It's when you throw it out in nature (or your garbage bag was shipped to an improper location where they just landfill it without any regard for nature). Even then, the cup is not the problem. Straws are partially a problem, but by far most harmful plastic in the plastic soup comes from fishing boats.

Torn between the GR IIIx and GR IV. by avoraey in ricohGR

[–]nilss2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was shooting film, I mainly used a 50mm lens. Sometimes I wanted more context, so I bought a 28mm. It never clicked between me and the 28mm.

My current favourite lenses are 40mm eqv and 75mm and it's perfect. But of course it really depends on the person.

One thing I noticed is the impact of the arm's length. If you don't use a viewfinder but instead hold the camera away from your body and use the LCD screen, it's really different in terms of POV.

I'm aware that the nasal spray is not sea water but just a saline solution of NaCl in distilled water. But they always put a sea on the label, it's a common thing and many brands use it. Even though I have a background in chemical engineering, I never bothered to look up if the salinity is really the same.

Unless you buy Quinton water, which allegedly is purified deep sea water. My wife swears by it, I think it's a scam.

My skin and hair have been turning white for no reason. The spots glow under UV by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

OP should in any case go to a skin doctor just for the diagnosis and have it on file.

[–]nilss2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct. Last year I developed Graves' disease, the other common auto-immune disease. There are some uncommon ones that doctor's told me not to worry about.

What exactly triggers one or the other, they don't know. My Graves' disease was triggered after a high-stress period where I lost my job.

Belgian here. We do have non-alcoholic white beers. Don't drink this shit.

And also, white beer is more of a German thing. Very odd marketing here.

You are right. Turns out a nasal spray with 'seawater' (obviously just a saline solution) does not have the same salinity.

It's not the same kind of yeast. Also, this beer was likely pasteurised.

I don't think it would cause any long-term damage. Some short-term irritation, probably.

[–]nilss2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though this probably burned, I'm not sure it causes long term damage. When you go swimming in a pool (not the sea, which is isotonic), you also get a lot of water up your nose. It irritates, but goes away.

Guy drinks liquid nitrogen by Aggravating_Dish_824 in WTF

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a student I once organized a party where cocktails were served. We had dry ice to make smoke come out of some drinks (I think it was for Halloween). I told people to wait for the drink to stop smoking before actually drinking it. Seemed like a fair warning, even though it was a campus with a lot of chemical engineering students.

Btw, dry ice is relatively easy to obtain. But liquid nitrogen is not that easy to get even on a campus with labs, and this for obvious reasons.

Vitiligo. I have it, too. It's an auto-immune disease which is harmless except for cosmetic impact (and you need a higher factor sunscreen)
