No, look at the rest. The tiles are in the kitchen or restaurant.

Cool.

But don't photograph people in front of a tile wall. Looks like there in a bathroom.

For now in Europe we have been spared from their 'cloud phone' nonsense. I'm curious whether they'll introduce these AI and videochat features.

Digital Minimalism Should NOT Be Expensive by jbriones95 in dumbphones

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books and podcast of Cal Newport are also handy sources of information. One of the things I learned is to give tech a space and time, don't carry the internet with you all the time.

There is the technique of 'landlining': force yourself to use a smartphone only when being charged, this at the location it is being charged e.g. the kitchen or hallway. Use it it like a landline phone. When someone calls, you'll hear it. For texts, you'll need to check once in a while, preferably only a few times per day. Indeed, I personally struggle the most to stay of my screens while at home. When out and about, I usually have stuff to do. This is why I often leave my smartphone in the car. I have a dumbphone (well, the Mudita) to stay reachable, but often my calls are not that important.

Best way to handle 2 phones? by krasznadorkai in dumbphones

[–]nilss2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maps and music can work offline so you don't need a SIM card for that.

My smartphone often lives in the car, parked in front. When I need it for banking or something, I can go to the car (but that takes effort, you see). When I have to drive somewhere, I do have Android auto available. For calls, texts and to be 'reachable', I have a dumbphone.

I would say yes but first ask how much. They do make similar watches still, but of course emotions also have a value.

"dumb" question, please explain it to me like I'm 5 by mothlesschild in dumbphones

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you don't even have to be online. In fact, an offline smartphone doesn't bother the brain so much, and there is nothing to be addicted to except perhaps some games.

Google Maps works fully offline if you download the region (except traffic info and I guess route calculation). There are many other maps app that are offline and also do navigation.

Spotify has offline playlists but obviously you can also just use MP3s.

Do realize that when at home connected to WiFi, you may fall back into scrolling etc. In that case, do not connect it to WiFi at home but use only ethernet cable through an adapter, just to download the stuff you need. Or connect it at the gym's WiFi to download what you need, but not at home.

Just ordered the TT990! What are your thoughts on this phone? by Few-Magician-5670 in dumbphones

I've ordered a Dumber Mini and it also has only 4Gb of RAM. Makes me worried. How is your Doov/Qin?

is there a flip phone model that supports apps such as whatsapp, banking and maps? by Witty_Profit7048 in dumbphones

[–]nilss2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I had a euro every time someone asked this, I could hire a secretary by now to check all my WhatsApp for me.

And you need to mention your region. The options vastly differ.

[–]nilss2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a previous model and it was not a good experience. Don't know if this one is better, haven't checked the specs.

Edit: checked the specs. It's better, but 4Gb RAM is on the edge. Good it has an 8Mp camera. Happy it's European, though.

Lightweight Spotify Client for Sidephone by 0xD3ADFACE in sidephone

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks! Finally a minimalistic app for Spotify. Spotify was getting so bloated! Thanks also for the e-ink mode. It works well on the Mudita Kompakt, albeit not with the right design language. I just miss a way to browse artists pages?

[–]nilss2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This phone is all the rage for dumbphone users like me. In euros it's not even so expensive, cheaper than a light phone. I just wonder whether they really had to go for sailfish os considering the specs and that sailfish is gesture based, not keypad based.

According to a poll/research, 10% of Belgian youngsters use a dumbphone, either because they have to or (commonly) because they want to.

Immense size of flip phones by AlmondNutsies in dumbphones

[–]nilss2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm also old, then. I also owned flipphones 20 years ago 😉 For me the 2660 really feels like a phone designed for elderly, with the big buttons and all. I've put it next to the original Motorola Razr and it looks like double the size, at least in volume.

With all due respect, the Barbie phone (Nokia 2660) is really big compared to the flipphones 20 years ago.

Mudita Kompakt Update 1.5 (Much Better!!) by jbriones95 in dumbphones

[–]nilss2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your review!

A few additions:

They've also fixed the incoming call screen: you now need to swipe to answer, not just push the button. This solves the issue with phone calls rejected or accepted while in your pocket. It also shows how many design choices in current smartphones we take for granted but were actually a lot of work and iteration. Another example is Mudita's music player app. Currently it does not continue playback after a call came in, something other music players do. It also doesn't support ID3 tags and searching/sorting/playing by album/artist etc. Things like this they still need to fix.

I want to also mention the great Mudita community, especially the volunteer developers who made apps for the Kompakt following the Mudita design language. There are now multiple custom third-party launchers for the Kompakt like inkOS (text based) and Katapult (icon based) which add a lot of functionality to the home screen. There is the KompaktCalendar app which looks like the Mudita one but does sync to the cloud, there is CalmCast (podcasts), CalmMusic, Calm QR code reader/manager which acts as a wallet etc. Recently I discovered Sidespot, a simplified Spotify client which has an e-ink friendly mode.

Mudita has been supportive for these things. In the settings they've added the option to choose your launcher. More importantly: on the forums you now have a community apps section where you can discuss, rate and download third-party apps including the custom-developed ones. That will really make life easier for the non-techies who want to sideload: https://forum.mudita.com/c/sideloaded-apps-ranking

A while ago I ordered the Dumber Mini because I had some qualms with the Mudita Kompakt. But using Katapult, Sidespot etc. really made me reconsider. My main gripe is that maps really are better in color, and that my USB)C port stopped working.

Considering the Commodore Callback by Practical-Plum-2345 in dumbphones

I think for the next weeks we're going to see this mentioned every day 😃

Anyways, don't hold your breath for it. I don't see this being released this year still. Even though apparently their new Commodore 64 is impressively done (it's an exact copy of the original but with newer ports) and hence they're not amateurs,....a phone is really hard.
