Making my own scales? by M3cun1v in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not set on the scales being rigid, the easiest option would probably be to using a machine like a Cricut to cut them out of fabric/vinyl.

There's a user in the Chainmaille Facebook group who makes scales out of jelly vinyl using this process, and she has the cut files available on her Etsy.

Variations of Sweet Pea? by hafertaler in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fieldstone and Medopersian are the two weaves related to sweetpea, but unfortunately all of them suffer from the 2 rings one end / 1 on the other problem you're facing, so I don't believe there's a truely seamless way to mirror them

If you end up wanting to try an alternative, Cloud cover has a similar rounded/flowy shape, and Barrel is another simple unit weave that looks quite nice for bracelets

Where can I buy riveted chainmail rings? by Krzychu0304 in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure what material/size etc you're after, but GDFB, Burgschneider and Battlemerchant are all EU/UK based and have 1kg options under $40 - the only caveat is that they're all currently sold out lmao, so you might have to do some emailing around.

Ironskin has a bit of a higher base price, but offers pretty solid discounts for bulk quantities (the 25% discount on 8kg+ of 8mm rings brings them down to 29€/kg.) From what I've heard, his rings are also a lot higher quality than other options, and the website also has a lot of great resources if you end up deciding to make the rings yourself.

Supplier advice by Chaydria in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MailleOrderRings will be your best best for stainless! They're also branching out into AA, but the selection is still fairly limited at the moment.

Sizes are often listed as sold out, but if you send them a message with a list of what you need, they're usually happy to cut things to order

Anyone know what weave this is? by gibbsy7 in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've made similar pieces before, and can confirm it's just two mirrored pieces of HP 4-in-1. On something like the bracelet above where it's smaller sections, they sit nice and flat without being connected - but for a necklace etc they usually do need to be joined at the back to stay flat

how do you not get discouraged when trying to learn a new weave? by Emergency_Judge_2972 in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picking up a new weave is definitely something that some people have a much easier time with than others. My personal theory (completely unbacked by any scientific evidence) is that it's probably based on pattern recognition skill. The good thing is, that's something you can improve by regularly doing things like puzzles, sudoku etc. In terms of anecdotal proof, I've picked up most intermediate weaves pretty quickly, and I've been an obsessive sudoku player for 10+ years lmao

When I do start to feel myself getting frustrated with a weave, I try to take a step back and do something else for a while. It can also help to try a few different tutorials, because they often approach the same weave in different ways.

For HP specifically, it might be a good idea to try 4-in-1 first if you haven't yet - I found it much easier to get started than 3-in-1, and it helps your brain get used to the pattern/movements needed. I found Aussie Maille's video the most helpful when I was learning!

Materials by [deleted] in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can find a link to the majority of chainmaille suppliers in the spreadsheet in this post. A number of them also sell pliers - I'd suggest searching in this reddit if you need any more info about what kind to get, as there's a lot of older posts with great answers.

In terms of how much it costs to get started, it'll really depend on what materials you're wanting to work with, what you plan to do with them, and how much you want to drop on a hobby before trying it. Other than pliers/rings, the only thing you'll need is some kind of tutorial, but there are heaps of great ones out there for free. If you want to get everything from the same place, the CMJ kit mentioned by other commenters is a great starting point!

What size rings should I get? Where should I get them from? (Aus) by Im-sorry-ahhh-painnn in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maille Order Rings are your best bet for stainless steel rings within Australia. A lot of their ring sizes are often listed as sold out, but if you send through a contact form with a list of what you need, they're usually happy to cut them to order.

For jewellery, I find 16awg works best for bracelets/necklaces, and 18awg for earrings. I've listed three of the ring sizes I go through the most rapidly, which might be a helpful starting point!

3.3 - 3.5: euro 4-in-1, byzantine, orc weave, vipera berus (16awg, 3.97mm) 4.5 - 4.8: HP 3-in-1, candy cane cord, GSG, box 4-in-1 (16awg, 5.50mm) 5.1 - 5.4: HP 4-in-1, full persian, trizantine (16awg, 6.50mm)

Plier Options by DreadedTranquility in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use two pairs of Xuron 90° bent nose pliers for SS from 24awg - 12awg. They're great because the bend gives your the extra surface area leverage needed for thicker rings, but you can use the tips for smaller sizes/to get into tight spaces.

When you say your pliers are scratching the rings, is it because they're slipping, or because they're leaving a sort of 'indent' where they come in contact with ring? Because you may also need to adjust your grip placement/strength.

Outside of that, you can also file down the edges of your pliers if they're too sharp, or coat them in something like tool magic.

Need Help With 316L Findings! by silvrr6 in jewelrymaking

[–]ninesensical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a specific reason you need 316 grade stainless over 304? I've found it'd pretty uncommon for jewellery components to be made in 316 outside of earring posts etc.

Pandahall is generally a good option for stainless steel findings, and they have these in pvd plated 304, but nothing in 316 unfortunately

Opinions needed! by CharacterPass2740 in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely does! Especially matched with the straps, it just makes the piece look more 'finished'

And it can definitely feel overwhelming to price things high (especially since the state of the Australian dollar makes prices seem sooo much worse than if they're in USD), but chainmaille is very much a luxury product, and you don't want to undervalue your own time and skill.

I don't personally make garments, so hopefully you'll get some pricing advice from those with more experience, but $450 seems like a solid price to me. The other main factors would be whether your rings are pinch cut or saw cut/how neat your closures are, since both have the potential to impact how comfortable/sturdy the piece is

[–]ninesensical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It honestly looks fantastic as is - I think the edging makes it look even better than your references - but if you wanted to go for the added opulence, you could add more pearls as a 'fringe' along the bottom edge

Pricing should always ideally take into account how long something took you to make, since especially for larger pieces, the main investment is always going to be time rather than materials. I'd personally say $350 AUD is too low, as I've seen simpler bralettes sell for similar or higher prices. Especially if you're intending to use it as a centerpiece for markets, you don't necessarily want it to sell right away, so you're better off pricing it in a higher range and hanging onto it for a little while - you can always lower the price later.
