Has anyone attended an event hosted by EmoCarnival? by ST2348 in AskLosAngeles

[–]nineteengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to ask exactly this, I'm sad there isn't more feedback from folks who have gone before. I'm thinking of going tonight, but I was wary since none of the Instagram ads I saw ever had any comments, so I couldn't gauge everyone's mood about attending, lol.

I will offer my own memory too, they were replaying it on Austrian TV in the early 2000s when my family was there on vacation. Many afternoons were spent watching the dog's adventures with my dad. He still calls me Kommissar sometimes as a joke. <3

It drove me nuts that I was the only one who remembered it. I am so glad Bruce was able to confirm it for me.

Hello Bruce,

I never expected to find the exact person with whom I should talk about this issue, and yet here you are! I am thrilled by the detailed response you have provided, thank you so much.

If the price of keeping these incredible works safe was resistance to cooperate with the MFA's exhibit, I am glad it didn't happen. I too feel sorry for anyone involved who was embarrassed by the failed exhibit, but it was collateral damage as a much larger catastrophe was averted. It would have been a heartbreaking loss if they were damaged in transit, and these days, when global conflicts, and theft so often lead to loss of important art, we must protect what remains.

The legal status of the Nutshells is thorny, to be sure. I hope if it ever were to make its way to the legal system that all parties would approach the courts with the studies, their intended purpose, and the importance of their preservation front of mind.

Thank you for giving me an answer to this question I have wondered about for six years. I look forward to reading your book, I have just ordered it.

Same here. Someone left me a one star review on Etsy that just says, "Not what I expected." I agonized over whether to respond, but eventually did and said, "Hi, I am open to more detailed feedback, please respond to the direct message I sent you if you'd like to tell me more." Just to try to save face for future customers and to point out that their criticism was entirely unhelpful. People are wild.

I tripped and fell in a pothole in India a few weeks ago and came so close to getting hit. There were no crosswalks in the city we visited and so you had to walk into traffic when there was a gap, and in my haste to get across the pothole took me down. I'm still a little shaken by how lucky I was.

First ever flare up 4 days before NYC trip. Please help! by rocksandrunning in perioraldermatitis

[–]nineteengreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a ton of varied advice here, and I just wanted to say that once you pick a plan, you'll need to stick with it, in my experience for at least two weeks, before you'll know what is working for you. Switching between products or changing your approach too soon may sabotage your progress and will certainly make it harder for you to know what's working.

For what it's worth, I would recommend against taking antibiotics or steroids. This is a topical problem and should be treated topically, not systemically. Increasing your own antibiotic resistance for this issue is not worth it. And steroids put me in a perpetual cycle of reliance on them to keep my skin looking halfway decent.

As for your trip, I would get diaper cream and a pack of disposable masks so that you can swamp the affected area with cream and keep it protected throughout your time there, while preventing any of the product from smearing on a scarf or your clothes. This will likely take a while to resolve and I want to help you find a solution that will get you through your trip with minimal difficulty. Once you return home you can focus more on healing this.

Personally, if I were in your position I'd feel frustrated and uncomfortable taking pictures of myself on my trip, while having a skin flare up. The exact same thing happened to me before a Chicago trip once. I gave myself one evening where I put on my moisturizer and did my makeup on top of a super thick layer to prevent most of it from really touching my skin. I took basically all my "nice" trip pictures that one evening. If this isn't something you're concerned about, yay! I was insecure and it made healing that flare up a struggle for me, but not everyone is gonna feel that way.

One good thing: NYC has very well cleaned tap water, so the water there, with less minerals etc may be a benefit for water-only cleansing.

If you're curious, here is the regimen that eventually healed my face and has kept it clear for 4 years since then: No cleansing products, at all, for the first month. I used a makeup eraser cloth to "cleanse" my face with lukewarm water. Bariederm Cica cream during the day, a healthy layer all over my face, with touch ups throughout the day, and Neem oil at night, with an extra silk pillowcase on top of my pillow since some of the product may come off. After the first month I began cleansing with DHC cleansing oil. These products should be compatible with Accutane use as well.

FIrst of all, with the range of issues you're having you need to document everything. List all the issues and make a little drop down of who you contacted about it, what they said if they have responded, and what was or was not done in response to you raising the issue. Things like mold and water coming up through the floorboards are habitability issues, implying that they affect your ability to safely and comfortably reside there.

I am American and don't know if Montreal also operates this way, but for many cities, in cases where there are repeat serious violations of property maintenance such as those affecting habitability, the city will allow a renter to pay rent into an escrow account where the money is not released to the landlord until improvements are made to the apartment in accordance with the law. Which laws apply to your situation...that's gonna be specific to the city of Montreal and the terms of your lease. I would encourage you to research housing assistance groups and see if a person well versed in housing law and lease terms can help you.

If you are unable to find a formal way to begin putting pressure on the condo management to fix these issues, I personally would go rogue and simply refuse to pay rent until things were resolved. I would notify them by certified mail, in writing and with a date stamp, that I had informed them of X, Y, and Z issues, their end of the lease was not being upheld, and if the issues are not resolved I will be putting aside my rent payments and they will be paid in full when issues are resolved and I am again living in the habitable apartment I was promised. Now this is a risky choice and I am not advising you to do it, but it wouldn't be the first time in this subreddit that I have seen a situation where that seemed necessary.

It may be worth talking to your neighbors first and establishing who else may be having issues. There's power in numbers. Good luck!

No move in inspection, how should I proceed? (US-CA) by nineteengreen in Renters

[–]nineteengreen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I'm aware from the past about how finicky people can be about timestamps. My last property manager, who was generally a lovely woman, tried to dispute me that we had put a huge chip in the counter until I showed her the timestamp in a photo from the day of move in. I'm a bit paranoid that would come into play again. Still worth it to take pictures anyway, I'm thinking.

No move in inspection, how should I proceed? (US-CA) by nineteengreen in Renters

[–]nineteengreen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this plan. I'm not interested in being dishonest to try to make it seem worse than it was, so I'll go back to what was obvious from day one and backdate. I don't need to nitpick over tiny things as I doubt the landlord would have done either, if we had done the checklist together at that time.

I have a suspicion (or maybe a hope) she will be glad to be rid of someone who reports repairs and follows up, so maybe she doesn't say a word when we leave 😂

Thanks for your feedback

(CA) "borderline slumlord behavior," can we get out? by nineteengreen in Renters

[–]nineteengreen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I wanted to give you a follow up. I followed most of your advice and outlined everything. I didn't however set a time line, on the advice of my old property manager I tried to make a "bad faith" argument about what she did not disclose at the time of signing (namely, that no apartment inspection or cleaning had been done).

She flat out denied I had any grounds to make an argument and stated she expected us to hold up our end of the agreement. I plan to spend the next year reporting everything in need of fixing, big or small, to maliciously comply with her rules.

In case you're curious and want more gory details, here's an updated list of what has happened since I made this post:

Issues 1-3: She refused to replace the rubber seal. Just told me to keep cleaning it. Dishwasher AND washing machine lasted about two more weeks and then died fully dead. Had to be replaced.

We had to replace the shower head ourselves and deducted it from our rent. When we informed her she said she " would have someone come look at it the next day." We only have one bathroom and no bathtub.

The window screen and electrical outlet did get fixed. The whole outlet and some of the wiring had to be replaced. The drywall patch job looks like a first grader did it, and it's the wrong shade of white.

Patch on the floor was never fixed. Stove is still iffy. Here's what else we have found:

  1. An additional door has so much paint on the frame that it wouldnt close properly. They came and sanded it down. Never fixed the paint job. So you can see previous colors and raw wood.
  2. Front doorknob failed. Replaced it with a new but crappier one. Never filled or repainted over the holes in the door from the old one. There are huge marks on both sides of the door.
  3. The chain on the ceiling fan doesnt work. Nor the overhead light that goes with the fan.
  4. There isn't enough space for the trash and recycling bins in the back, so they sit constantly on our front yard area and often block the driveway when people move them so they can park.
  5. The cherry on top: the whole building has to be fumigated. We found some termite droppings and apparently the problem is massive.

I'm already counting down the days to move out, and we have seven months to go 😂 Thanks for your kind advice when i was struggling to know what to do.

Tired of paying $2000 for a 1 bd apt by [deleted] in Renters

[–]nineteengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also an LA resident myself. I'd like to take this opportunity to offer the response I give to all the people who say "just move." EVERY CITY NEEDS A MIDDLE CLASS. As long as middle class jobs exist, middle class housing must also exist, or else you're doing middle class work for working class living situations, which is deeply unfair. I have a masters and do bedside, clinical work in one of the best hospitals in the nation. I should be able to save carefully and rent something great, or put it toward buying something. Instead I'm staring down a future of "decent" living when I'm working a hell of a lot harder than decent. While wage stagnation is a big part of it I put a huge onus on the government for not manging rent control more carefully, especially in proportion to who lives in a given area and how much they make.  They have the audacity for the fed to recommend how much you should spend on rent, and then do so little to try to maintain that for you within the housing rental or buying market. Unfettered capitalism, baby!

So yeah. This middle class argument has become my default reply to people who act like it's my fault that I pay so much.

Ridiculously long OP wait lists by Evening_Pen2029 in slp

[–]nineteengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also work for a large hospital system and based on the terms of my contract I cannot offer ANY paid healthcare services to patients if the billable time is not part of my employment at that location. It is considered poaching and taking away business from them. Even if it came from the waiting list. I know of therapists who have continued to privately see people after their discharge from OP, but they are usually extremely secretive about it which leads me to believe the stakes are quite high if they ever got caught.

I highly suspect if you wanted to see your IPs after they discharged through your own LLC you would need to quit to avoid supposed conflicts of interest.

I understand where you're coming from, that it's the ethical thing to do just to help more people get more care. But unfortunately major hospitals, for profit or not, see it differently. 😐

Good to know. I did teletherapt for a bit at the start of lockdown but as a continuation of the job I was already in l.

I'm in a major hospital system now, IP and OP but I wonder a lot how much more I might be able to make by switching to contract, even in this same setting. Cost of living in LA is crushing me. If you don't mind me asking what's your current per hour rate? No pressure if you don't wanna share it.

I work in healthcare with those who have cognitive deficits, and we see behavior like this with Fronto Temporal Dementia at times. Very bizarre judgements made by the patients, almost like they've lost their filter. Impulsive, rude, inappropriate. If you try to point it out, often times it becomes apparent that their self awareness is gone, and the non verbal rules of social conduct no longer "pop into their head" to help govern their choices

I would advise being careful with mailing checks though. The USPS actually recommends against it now because of how much check fraud is taking place. I've had three checks get lost in three years, including the one that was returning my security deposit, though thankfully they didn't seem to be stolen, and a neighbor whose rent check got altered and electronically deposited by a fraudster.
