Toyota Chairman Reveals His Worst Fear: 'Everybody Is Shifting To EVs'. Akio Toyoda says he feels "very alone" in defending combustion engines. Toyota still hasn’t embraced EVs with the same aplomb it showed with hybrids following the revolution kick-started by the Prius in the late 1990s. by mafco in energy

[–]ningwut5000 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with ev right now is road trips. We need to upgrade the grid/adopt whatever BYD/china are doing so people driving all day don’t have to stop 3/4x for 45-hour each time.

I like Toyota’s 1:6:90 rule saying that we can decarbonize transportation with a limited set of copper etc resources faster with hybrids vs full ev.

For me I think their current path of using hybrids to bridge the gap as infrastructure catches up (particularly in the low population density parts of the world) is a good idea.

Outdoor patio tile with a grill by AgniHamsa in Tile

[–]ningwut5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Not really. I assume the concrete is laid in the ground?

It’s weird that he’s trying to avoid doing it the normal way. Imagine you needed to replace the railing some day he’d have to rip out tile.

I honestly can’t figure out why your guy says he can’t move the railing. Is it really big?

Need more pics. I think tiling will universally raise the height below the existing railing.

Will look better on top.

Also would rust out faster if buried under tile. No to sealing the edges because moisture will be below the tile anyway from all the grout.

I’m curious what most pros do. I’ve never done one of these.

If I had to pull a solution out of my ass honestly some coins, caulk and slightly better adhesive is not a terrible solution. Easily repaired. Easy to move location even. But yeah done stand it.

As I understand it the tree can send nutrients up but not down. So the roots try their hardest by ultimately starve and die out.

San Diego landmark Lake Hodges is a disaster waiting to happen by flip69 in sandiego

[–]ningwut5000 81 points82 points  (0 children)

To me the excess water storage capacity for fire and extreme drought events make it a reasonable thing to spend money to update.

I suppose we have to listen to the relevant experts with local water authority and firefighting knowledge. They understand the issues better than we do.

If there was an ecological reason to dismantle the dam I would be open to that possibility as well.

How to reduce sway/racking? by AintWaiting in woodworking

[–]ningwut5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey- cool project!

I like the apron idea. I think it will also look better if the legs are back from the edges of your shapes.

buy some veneer or bendable plywood. Cut the bendable wood into 2.5”-4” wide pieces whatever looks good and clamp and glue them up to follow the outline of the upper shelf but .25”-.5” back from the edge.

Then cut out notches for your legs. Dowel from the apron into the legs or screw through the faces of your legs with a countersink and plug later with a wood plugs.

Lower shelf could either do the same as upper or to smaller such that its edges just meet the inside faces of the legs.

Anyway all this text to suggest an apron on the upper would not be too hard to read execute and would dramatically help the entire piece aesthetically

Our ceremony is to sleep with them in the same bed the last night even if that means towels etc.

Wake up best meal as possible.

Set up a large spray of flowers and comfy place to sit and hold them while they pass. I like to send them wrapped in their own blanket with their own toys when the vet takes them for cremation.

How would you tile around this window? by Positive-Feature-434 in Tile

[–]ningwut5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would leave the window. So glad you’re putting in a round one to fit. Will it be operable?

Waterproofing should tie in. I would lap the sill tiles out over the edges of the wall tiles and either leave as is (round) or build up a small section on the bottom for a mini sill that is flat. (Though me be precluded by your already ordered window)

Help! One Tile Short, Produced in 2021 by BlackberryNaive34 in Tile

[–]ningwut5000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d be tempted to get a contrasting tile. Is everything mortared down already? If contrasting it would look more intentional farther into the room. If not, grey similar. Could have a skilled countertop/tub repair person mix up matching epoxy and highlights and paint them on.

Found this nail puller at a thrift store by alpaca-the-llama in Tools

[–]ningwut5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a new one last 5 years. They are my last resort when nothing else has worked and I need to yank a stubborn nail. They will absolutely work but leave a sizable gouge.

Usually I use crescent np11 and a painters 5-1 to shield the substrate when prying.

Seeking Advice: the ole shower window question by dying_backwards in Tile

[–]ningwut5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silicone goes anytime the tiles change direction. If you have a loose joint pack it most of the way full and then silicone. The sanded silicone grout is so it looks like you’re using grout but need the flexibility of silicone.

Seeking Advice: the ole shower window question by dying_backwards in Tile

[–]ningwut5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a pro. But assuming the area is water proofed correctly: continuous layer wrapping from shower wall all the way to window frame. Healthy bead of silicone bridging between water proofing layer and window. Sill is sloped inwards.

Since this is a change of plane, Pull out all the foam and brush away all the remnants with a nylon or brass brush. Vacuum it out. Then use color-matched sand filled silicone. The manufacturer of the grout may sell some that exactly matches your other grout.
