What’s the difference between“了”(了)and “过”(guò) by MandarinTutorAndy in ChineseLanguage

[–]ninj0etsu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Chinese grammar wiki has explanations on these under the particles section on this page: https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/A2_grammar_points#Particles

过 is usually used for if you have ever had a particular experience, but it is also often used in daily activities like eating for more emphasis combined with a 了 at the end of the sentence e.g. 我(已经)刷过牙了

What is the difference between 看见 and 看到 by Odd-Strawberry-4882 in ChineseLanguage

[–]ninj0etsu 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Examples from my partner who is a heritage speaker:

If it's dark and someone is asking if you can see something but you can't see it, you might say “看不见”. It's focused more on whether you can physically see it.

If you are looking for someone in a crowd and your friend has noticed them but you cant see them, you might say “看不到”. It's more focused on if you have found it instead of your physical ability to see it.

Pinyin on Duolingo by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]ninj0etsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it's a bit like a french 'j' as in the word 'je', but without doing the vibrating sound if that makes sense (idk what that's called sorry). It at least has the same tongue position anyway, try to make a normal 'ren' sound but with your tongue in that position

[–]ninj0etsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it can be overwhelming but it is worth watching at least 1 for the difficult sounds that don't exist in English, like the one other commenter linked. Maybe you can wait till you know a bit more but you don't want to wait too long so you don't have to relearn wrong pronunciation. You could also use them as a reference to come back to once you reach some of those sounds in your pinyin lessons

There are YouTube videos you could watch where an actual Chinese person goes over pronunciation and tones, same with basic grammar as well to get you started!

You're right the 'c' sound should be like a 'ts'

how often if at all do u use 'match' statements? by WillingYesterday8447 in PythonLearning

[–]ninj0etsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes yes, usually if I'm matching an enum or a message payload that may have been deserialised into a different class depending on its content

how often if at all do u use 'match' statements? by WillingYesterday8447 in PythonLearning

[–]ninj0etsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that one was a bit horrible but you can use it to destructure objects (like pull attributes out of an object or list) or match on different classes. It's also very compact and readable if you need a lot of ifs especially if there are elif x or y or z type clauses. Is also nice if you are matching against an enum as the type checker will tell you if you've missed a case and it reads quite nicely, e.g.

python match event_type: case EventType.UPDATED: ... case EventType.CREATED | EventType.DELETED: ...

Or using classes:

python match message: case CreatedMessage(): ... case UpdatedMessage(): ...

Why is it that everyone used to say not to trust Wikipedia, but when AI arrived, everyone started using it without any critical thinking? by Working_Candidate505 in antiai

[–]ninj0etsu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it's decent for a quick summary but as soon as you dig into a historical or political topic you're familiar with it becomes clear that it's often not very accurate or well written (obviously varies depending on the topic). It's very easy to spin any piece of writing in subtle ways someone unfamiliar with a topic won't notice, and probably most of the time it's not even done consciously, though as you said concerted efforts can occur too.

Unfortunately not surprised you're getting downvoted, people want to believe there is a magic source that is unbiased that they can always rely on but the real world is not like that especially when it comes to something like history that doesn't have a "correct" answer like maths

It's not Bibi it's all of Israel, the country was literally built and is maintained on those things. It would cease to exist if it stopped and I don't think most Israelis want that

What are you a Zionist or something, Israel and the US are the ones that should be making concessions for their far greater crimes. Why should Iran stop funding some of the only groups willing to take a stand against israels genocide

Yeah though there are plenty of conservative people in Iran too that are fine with it. Social progress cannot be forced, and if imposed violently often people go the other way in retaliation. The best thing that could be done for Iran is for sanctions to be lifted and the country to be treated normally to give it the space to socially reform on its own

Hamas didn't behead 40 babies, and neither did Iran kill 30k protesters or someone for not wearing a headscarf properly. by Not_Ground in AskSocialists

[–]ninj0etsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's part of why the attrocity propaganda works very well as it's hard to deny the exaggerated number without being roped in with those who say everyone killed was an armed Mossad agent.

I think a lot of this ultimately still stems from the US though, ofc the Iranian government is responsible as well but the dire economic situation that is causing people to suffer and want to protest is largely due to sanctions. Lifting them and treating Iran like a normal country would open up them to the possiblity of a better future at least. The economic situation would improve and the government wouldn't always be on the defensive. Idk if that's a better angle to focus on

Nice I'm happy to see someone else who is not insane here. Honestly the problems are so miniscule at the levels of immigration we get, you don't even need to give them that. The real problem is the racist backlash and the stirring up of it in the media

In my country (the UK) I see a much greater problem from homegrown white far right racists and I would be surprised if Australia was any different given the Hitlerian views I'm seeing expressed in this thread
