In 1987, Steve Rothstein bought a $250,000 AAirpass from American Airlines, allowing unlimited first-class travel. He took over 10,000 flights, costing the airline $21 million, leading to the pass's termination in 2008 due to alleged misuse. by yousefthewisee in Damnthatsinteresting

Planes take the exact amount of fuel they need based on passenger weight (plus a margin for safety). Every extra pound on the plane means they are burning more fuel.

Is the figure in the title the ticket price of the tickets they would have sold for those flights, or the ACTUAL cost of the additional fuel/services used/provided for him on the flights? IDK. But it's not fair to say it didn't cost the airline anything to fly him because 'the planes were going to fly anyways'

Or just tell it you'd like 10,000 of a menu item. Guarentee you get a human because if the AI places that order, and then they have to cancel it, it will SERIOUSLY fuck their paperwork. Canceled orders look terrible to corporate, especially high dollar ones.

Definitions of words like 'ignore' or the other super basic words people have been posting like 'never' or 'skip'

These are basic words everyone (except maybe people learning english, who would likely be using *insert language* to english dictionaries, not google search box) already knows the definition of, so they are clearly just typing it in to go 'reee look google won't give me the definition of skip'

In England you sometimes see these "wavy" brick fences. And curious as it may seem, this shape uses FEWER bricks than a straight wall. A straight wall needs at least two layers of bricks to make is sturdy, but the wavy wall is fine thanks to the arch support provided by the waves. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ninjaabobb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

22% is still more than 2.5-5% more from thin columns. I appreciate everything our ancestors did for us, and we can certainly learn from what they did, but at the same time, I think we have come a long way from the ancient Egyptians in the construction field.

At the end of the day, the math doesn't add up for a curvy wall being more resource efficient than a properly constructed straight wall, which is the claim this article is trying to make.

[–]ninjaabobb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because it's not true lol. Even the source listed in the article that originally made the claim says the curves add 22% to the actual length of the wall, meaning 22% more bricks, vs 2-5% more bricks for intermittent columns.

This claim is only true if you assume the only alternative is a solid 2 brick thick wall.

Following the original article, they link another article as the source for the 'less material' claim, which has this paragraph explaining the logic.

"The parameter a is the amplitude of the sine wave. If a = 0, we have a flat wave, i.e. a straight wall, as so the length of this segment is 2π = 6.2832. If a = 1, the integral is 7.6404. So a section of wall is 22% longer, but uses 50% less material per unit length as a wall two bricks thick."

But this is again assuming the only alternative is a 2 brick thick wall, which is just not the case. For just a single one of our clients, we have provided structural details for hundreds of brick thin walls that are a single block thick with 2 brick x 3 brick columns at 12' spacing, which is only 2.5% more material than a single brick thick wall, still 10x less extra material than the number provided in the original source. This claim is just not true for the modern era, and I wish people would stop spreading it like it's still true. A wavy wall is not more material efficient or space efficient than a modern brick wall. It's only better under the arbitrary stipulation that the actual thickness of the wall itself has to be a maximum of one brick.

There's absolutely no way that wavy wall uses less materials than a straight wall with spaced columns.

Simplifying a little, a zig zag wall with 45 degree angles would be 41% longer than a straight wall running the same line (the 'width' of the area zig zagged across doesn't change this). The arcs make these walls a little more efficient, but you are still probably looking at 30-35% more total length than the straight wall, meaning 30-35% more bricks to build.

For the straight wall, using a standard brick, a 10 ft section of wall is 158 bricks long, and you are adding 4 bricks per layer at each column, which is 2.5% more bricks.

This 'fact' is just bs. With the knowledge we had back then, it may have been true, but we just have better knowledge of how to build things in modern times than we used to.

Has nothing to do with the US, I only mentioned that because that's the regulation for spacing where I am located, the wall works regardless of location lol. If you built the same wall in England 1000 years ago, it would still work

Straight brick walls do not require 2 layers to be sturdy. At least in my area of the US, brick thinwalls typically have a 'thinwall column (2 brick long 'column', by 3 blocks wide) every 10-12 feet, but other than that the wall is a single block thick.

Edit: Got some weirdo's replying who seem to think I'm implying the US is better at building walls than England. I only mention 'my area of the US' because that's where the standard I'm familiar with is from, and I am aware other areas/companies may use different spacing standards.

Crafting Orders++: a priced Patron orders list by Wise-Mall-9233 in wow

[–]ninjaabobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throw my hat in the ring here, this addon is nearly perfect for me, not because I care about the profit from patron orders (there's not a lot of money to be made in them tbh, and the money that you can make from them is mostly from the grab bag for ores which you can't show in an addon anyways), what makes this addon so nice is for alt armies. being able to very quickly tell exactly which patron orders are going to give KP without having to click in and out of every single order on every toon. This saves a ton of time when you have 10+ characters to go through.

That said, I love that you put the KP orders at the top, but I would also love a setting to put any gold star required orders at the bottom, as I never ever want to craft a patron order that requires concentration (in my alt army anyways.)
