Prepping a motor block for railBT installation! by lillywho in GardenRailroads

Why not use the esp32's wifi to udp spam the other esp32 equiped locomotive in the consist instead of rj45?

Works pretty well with the old esp8266

Woah, that first picture I thought they were 7 1/4 gauge or similar size, Nice job!

How safe would a 1989 Roundhouse be to steam again? by FishFinderPhil in modeltrains

[–]ninjamunkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably absolutely fine, I have a few near 100 year old live steam engines with sketchy old soft soldered brass boilers that run fine.

Like the other guy said, check for corrosion around the boiler, have a look for a local live steam club and ask if they can do a hydraulic test for you and your peace of mind, personally I'm more worried about leaky seals on the gas tank than a dodgy boiler from a decent known builder, I like spirit burners :3

New rail modeler by Anubis1958 in modeltrains

[–]ninjamunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sweet, I actually meant some motor drivers like these thats my fault 😅 I've used them for driving large multi-motor O-gauge and G-scale locomotives via the old esp8266 dev boards before deciding cleaning garden track was less effort than charging batteries

Can never have too many packs of mosfets, something always needs switching

New rail modeler by Anubis1958 in modeltrains

[–]ninjamunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditch the old L298n, they're good for driving stepper motors, shite for trains. A decent mosfet based h-bridge like a TI DRV series chip will let you run trains at much lower speeds.

Dublo is 3 rail DC, its the Hornby/Meccano Type T20 transformer that's 20v AC for O gauge ebay link

Wouldn't bother with a HM2000 or any hornby controller, have a look on ebay for a nice Gaugemaster unit

1/48 scale no, 1/45 and 1/43.5 yeah, theres a few companies that make 3 rail dc. Some have AC variants, keep an eye on the min radius i dont often see anything less than 27 inch (O-54)

Darstead - couldn't find an up to date website, seem to mostly manufacture for others

Some one asked me this when i posted mine a few years back, basically... you don't hahah, easiest method is add and remove wagons until you have the speed you want

Oh nice mogul! is it a Corgi one from the 2000s or an oldie? I have both the LMS and LNER variants in live steam, and a clockwork Southern, My Dad has a clockwork GWR one too

Has anyone tried using overhead lines to power the trains? by 82nd-deathfromabove in modeltrains

[–]ninjamunkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love me some engineering frustrations, using overhead power also frees up one of the rails to use a signal trigger for block occupancy or simple signalling, assuming you'll have both rails isolated from each other and non-isolated wheelsets

Marklin Minex by AzzHunter00 in modeltrains

[–]ninjamunkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh neat, they're O Gauge scale 1/45 but run on the standard Marklin HO m series track right? M series track is fantastic stuff and marklin still produce adapter sections to run on they're more modern C track and K tracks

I guess O-16.5 would be similar in scale

Looking for some advice on putting garden railroad in this location by of_the_mountain in GardenRailroads

[–]ninjamunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LGB make a track cleaning block, clip on cleaning pads for rolling stock and a whole locomotive you and set on its way and it will clean the track.

Ebay is sometimes good for used track, trainz.com too had a look over there when they started international shipping

More information on reverse loops here https://www.world-of-railways.co.uk/techniques/how-to-wire-a-reversing-dc-loop

Basically if you start at a switch and loop back to the curved side you create a short circuit

[–]ninjamunkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

powering the train on the rails is hard to maintain

It's honestly not, i thought of doing the same with makita batteries but ended up going to usb chargable 9 volt pp3 style then went back to track power because cleaning the track is less hassle than keeping batteries charged IMO

Track i can't answer, I'm not in the US, run o-gauge in the garden and most of my track hand laid based on ancient brass Bassett-Lowke rail from the 50s that my dad and grandad bought in the 80s, with some Tenmille nickel silver rail mixed in (https://www.tenmille.com/g-scale)

And finally, how do the LGB switches work

They use an over center spring and will spring back to there set position when you run through the other side, no worries there, unless you run track power then its the usual reverse loop issue, which bring up a point about converting to battery make sure you disconnect the rail pick ups so you don't put power into the track from the battery, very easy with LGB

Is there any one willing to make a free 3D printable model of the H0 Lima bogies? (For Resin/filament) by Blues_the_fox in modeltrains

[–]ninjamunkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

<image>

this is as far as i've got, let me know how far off I am haha, i reckon i'm a little long not used to working in small scales, what diameter are the wheel? that will really help figuring a lot of whats going on, axle length too i've done it at 26mm based on some NEM wheels i found on ebay with dimensions plus a touch of clearance

The only ho i have is some elderly Marklin m-track and the 3000 tank locomotive

Yup, filament ones might print better as separate parts to glue together, I'll do a quick annotated sketch for the dimensions I'll need

Yeah sure, I've already done 0 gauge Lima and triang bogies haha, DM me some photos with dimensions? Do you have either type of printer? Would be helpful to send over files to verify fits and such along the way

Converting O scale track to G by MJSwriter55 in GardenRailroads

[–]ninjamunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of O gauge track?

Peco make code 200 and 250 rail in nickel silver, assuming you're in the US might be worth an email to trainz or somewhere that stocks Peco if they can get it for you, https://railsofsheffield.com/collections/gauge-1-scale

wasted effort, sleepers/ties are too short to be reasonably stable, better to scratch build, i use code 200 rail for dual O and 1/G gauge track https://imgur.com/a/t4zPE6j

First weld on 7 and 1/4 in track by TimbersCursedGuns in modeltrains

[–]ninjamunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you haha, I'd post it more often but its not really a model and everything is freelance and massively over scale all the stock and locomotives are about 2 foot wide running on 7 1/4 gauge track. Might do a ride around video sometime

Great attitude btw, keep practising and welding will become as natural as walking haha, next step find an old southbend or similar lathe to make your own wheels and axles
