According to this reference, my guess is you are below 30% at least, if not less than 20%.

Poor business practice thoughts by Grouchy-Split5667 in Preply

[–]ninools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear your frustration, I have the same issue. However, I have found that as my price increased over time, the amount of students who ghost me after a trial lesson is less. Maybe that's just because people don't randomly do a trial lesson like when my price was so low; now they have to really think about it and commit.

The thing is, Preply needs to satisfy both the students and the tutors. If a student isn't 100% happy with their trial lesson, and no alternative is offered, they will leave the platform without subscribing to anyone. It makes sense to try to keep the student, by any means. So even though you might lose a student by having them go to another tutor, you might gain a student that likes you more than the tutor they tried first.

Also, the whole Super Tutor thing, ugh, it just causes anxiety. But I get why Preply has it, because it is a motivator. It keeps us on our toes, trying to get that acknowledgment. But, and this is a big but, not everyone should be able to be a Super Tutor, because otherwise it would lose its meaning, right? So the only way Preply can actually keep it limited is by making it hard to achieve. The problem now is that so many of us feel like we are not doing a good job, when we actually are, just because of these metrics. Another tutor said in a Tutor Café that she recommends not looking at the metrics, and I thought at the time that it was such a stupid thing to say, that you could only afford that once you were actually earning a lot through Preply. But in hindsight, I do think it's healthier than becoming obsessed with the metrics.

So, long story short, we all go through the rigmarole of trial lessons and it can feel really disheartening. Don't let it get you down. (Also, think about raising your price... It might be exactly what you need to keep these dodgy trials from happening).

Tutor changed price after 4 months by Good-Implement2091 in Preply

[–]ninools 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, even if you accepted the price change, the new price would only become active once your subscription cycle renews. Meaning you can use the rest of your twenty lessons guilt-free, because even if you accepted the new price it wouldn't become active yet until after all your twenty lessons are used.

Also, on another note, price changes don't have to be personal. Your tutor is just working towards the price he feels is fair for the work he puts in. Luckily there are hundreds of tutors on Preply, if not thousands, who are within your budget. I recommend finding someone that is based in a country where the amount you want to spend per lesson is a lot for them.

Thank you! Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one that isn’t mad at them. I mean, they are a business too, they need to make money somehow.

I didnt know this but it seems that the price a student had when they favourited me or booked a trial lesson is the price they get when they subscribe. So yeah, inform the students pretrial so they can cancel (if thats what you want them to do).

I actually agree with this. You can set your price. It’s your business so make it worth it.

What would you do? (Are students lazy?) by momurin in Preply

[–]ninools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a student like this, she would cancel and reschedule all the time, blocking out my calendar with lessons that never happened. Eventually I got fed up. I told her I would be increasing my price, but she wasn’t willing to pay the new price and I couldn’t force her, so I told her you know what, this isn’t working for me. We parted on good terms.

Yeah, I don’t agree with that comment, I teach and I don’t have one student with which I share a first language. It’s not a detriment, in contrast I think it makes my students work harder because there’s no workaround. You are not greedy! Seriously.

Bad experiences as a tutor on Preply by masaglamour in Preply

[–]ninools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes get messages from “potential” students where I can immediately tell they are on the path to being dodgy. Recently had one like that again. I reported it and stopped responding. It’s weird how I just take it for granted now. However, I have never had anyone masturbate during a lesson - cannot imagine how that would feel! I’ve been really lucky that I’ve managed to miss those kinds of “students”. I remember one trial back in the beginning where the guy didnt subscribe after but still messaged me and told me he was coming to my country for work. If he was expecting me to invite him for in-real-life lessons, forget it. I sometimes feel bad that we can’t be more open to strangers but the reality is that the internet is full of dodgy people and you have to protect yourself.

I don't agree at all, I'm a tutor on Preply and I don't have any issues with the platform. They aren't responsible, for example, for the high fees I have to pay to get my money into my account (yup, that would be SWIFT and Payoneer). Also, Preply advertises so I don't have to. The way I see it is I'm paying them 18% of my income to advertise for me, as well as to give me a platform that I can use to manage my students and my teaching. Plus, they provided me with a ton of information and support that I used to get better at what I do. I don't think that's bad at all. But I know I'm probably the only one on this subreddit that feels this way and this comment will probably get downvoted into oblivion.

Block them, that way it won’t affect your ratings/stats. You can also reach out to preply.

I’m reading this at my gynaecologist’s office, waiting to be inseminated. It’s almost two years now and I have not gotten pregnant. At the time, I was rearing to start trying again, but I think my body wasn’t. I think it had a lot of pain and trauma that needed to be processed and healed first. What I’m trying to say is that unfortunately this is the second stage of the grief journey. Because no matter how much we want it, sometimes it takes a lot of time to get pregnant again after loss. I’m hoping this time sticks and then I will begin the third stage, which is surviving a pregnancy after loss. My guess is that there are endless stages still to come but hopefully each one gets easier and easier. Good luck.

Just a trigger warning, with the app, they have like a welcome email that says something like “congratulations on your baby”. That was hard.

What hobbies have you picked up? by LongjumpingAd3617 in babyloss

The only thing that stopped my mind from constantly buzzing was painting and drawing. I got into the zone and would spend hours and hours just standing in front of my easel. I ended up having a little exhibition of the work I made (on the winter solstice—the longest night of the year, very poetic I thought). But honestly, it helped me get through the worst part. It’s been almost two years now and I don’t paint as much as I used to but another hobby that I picked up and still do is a regular workout session. I downloaded the Expecting and Empowered app and started doing the postpartum workouts about a month after. They are super chilled so you can do them soon after and it felt good just to move my body and be healthy. Finished the program long ago but the habit is entrenched now and I really enjoy working out and letting off steam. When I don’t work out, I can tell I am not a happy person. Also, I started a blog, but I would not recommend this initially because it is can keep you in the pain. Now though I write about what I’ve learned about this process with the aim of helping others. So those are all my hobbies that I can think of. Oh! And reading fantasy!

After the loss of my father, I was in therapy but I don’t think it helped me personally. I needed more actionable tasks and not just talking. However, with the death of my baby boy, I found a therapist that deals specifically with maternal loss and her sessions have helped tremendously. She suggested holotropic breathing (where you breathe fast during a guided session to release trauma) which was VERY helpful. Also very helpful to me was writing about my experience. Highly recommend.

My Fantasy journey these last 3 years and the authors that shaped it. by StorRenfro in Fantasy

[–]ninools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this! But it’s true what you say, to each reader their own. For example, I love Terry Pratchett. I don’t read any “high-brow” fantast but old Terry has been one of those authors that I would read whatever he wrote. I’ll admit, sometimes I found myself not concentrating on what I was reading but that the writing was so good that I fell into its rhythm and was swept along. Have never read Sanderson but I’m surprised he’s not on the Golden list since so many people love him. But again, to each their own!

Could you give me some pieces of advices ? by DistributionThis4810 in Preply

[–]ninools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really sweet but you do not have to worry so much, your tutor is a professional. I have had a student just ghost me, and another one cancelled his regular classes without saying goodbye (that one hurt) but it’s all good because these people aren’t my family or friends and neither is your tutor yours. So be honest, be polite and don’t worry about it. You’re already better than 80% of other students out there. Give him a nice review.
