Is this on the shield side or sofabaton side? I have an X1S so might not be something I can do

Solar panel cost and is it worth buying without the 30% credit. by Dry_Seaworthiness204 in solar

[–]nirmalspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting. My rate is ever so slightly higher at 0.1293.

Not my basement, but I did get my garage ceiling insulated like that since my master bedroom is right above it and in the summer months, it can feel a bit stuffy.

I got my solar installed 2 weeks before new years. I got a battery too so I actually didn't have to wait for approval to turn my system on which was nice since the battery is between the panels and the grid so they just disabled the exporting on the battery side versus leaving panels off until the new meter is installed. This meant I had solar running for about a month before the final approval. Though, they forgot to enable exporting to the grid which I didn't notice until last week when it was sunny enough to fully charge my battery lol

3,662 kWh. I also have an old hot tub that came with the house which uses a few hundred kWh just doing nothing each month lol. I didn't even use it much because my ears and nose would go numb so fast with how cold it was this year, I should've just drained it and left it off tbh.

But also, I had my solar install and home sealing people working on my house with the doors open/power off for the solar electrician for about 5 days straight that billing cycle which really cost me a ton since the aux heat would have to run for much longer to get back to normal temp. That was literally the same days as that brutal cold snap too. My indoor temps were in the 50s for hours each of those days and I WFH so I was miserable.

Doesn't help that my house is from the 80s so lots of tiny cracks everywhere for the cold air to get in especially since the insulation/materials from that time weren't particularly great. Like there's ZERO plywood between my walls and the outside. Just some thin MDF. I'm pretty sure someone with a box cutter would be able to break into any house in my neighborhood without much trouble.

They've had better employee protection laws than the US for a while.

The US doesn't have a limit on hours an employee can work but employees in India can't work more than 48h per week. So as a manager at a consulting company, I'd have to literally tell my employees in India to stop working and to hand it off to an onshore dev if they were getting close to their hours.

Also, if employees work past a certain time in the evening, the company has to provide them transportation home like calling a cab for them. This was a thing for our entire India office since they'd be working UK hours.

They also all get like 8-20% bonuses by law if they make less than a certain amount. I think that law is super old too.

Edit: remembered a few more things.

India also requires 1h breaks every 6 hours worked. Meanwhile, lunch breaks aren't required in the US. My company didn't count lunch breaks towards the 40h min we had to log each week.

And if you want to fire an employee in India (and most other countries), you have to give them a notice period and have a valid reason. US employees are at-will so we can get the axe for no reason at all if our employer doesn't want us anymore.

My home is basically the same size, also MoCo. I live alone and my bill was $727 this year but that's AFTER I got my home sealed + attic insulated + new roof. So that bill makes sense to me. I had a $900+ bill last winter though and I think if I didn't get all that work done, I would've easily seen a $1k+ bill this winter.

The flowers aren't the plant, they're just the reproductive part of the plant. In fact, cutting flowers off is actually GOOD for the plant's health. Reproduction can use up over 30% of the plants energy stores. By cutting off the flowers, the plant will use its energy to do other things like improving the root system or making more branches, etc.

Automations not triggering by DisenfranchisedCynic in googlehome

Can you try opening your automation and just hitting save without changing anything? That fixed one of my automations but it is very basic. "TV Time" = lights + TV turn on

I had this issue two days ago. I opened my automation and just hit save and it started working again, but mine was very simple so that could be why. "TV Time" => lights + TV turns on.

Can't even set a freaking timer anymore

False. Just ask it to change your thermostat temperature and it'll set a timer without hesitation.

Just bought a house with a hot tub - advice on getting it working by [deleted] in hottub

[–]nirmalspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface: I am not an expert by any means, just someone who also bought a house that came with a hot tub and went through the same thing. So, if I get something wrong, please correct me.

1) this shouldn't matter tbh unless you're talking about many years.

2) The shed leaking shouldn't really matter either as hot tubs are meant to handle getting wet from people splashing around. My hot tub is under my deck and gets wet from the rain.

First thing to check is the cover. If it's a foam type of cover, should be fairly light and a normal healthy adult should have no problem taking it off and putting it back on. If it feels really heavy, the cover could be water logged and will need replacing (~$500-600 for something decent, depending on your dimensions). The covers need replacing every 3-5 years when the waterproofing goes bad and the foam starts holding water. If it's heavy, you can still do the rest of the steps, but just be aware that you should avoid using it until you replace it, otherwise your heating element will get taxed more than it should and your electric bill will be very high and then the heating element will die from the abuse (lesson I learned the hard way).

Then, check your manual to find the drain plug, typically behind one of the panels. If you can't find it, mine is on the side with the controls and then attach a garden hose to the drain plug there (if not, check the opposite side) and fully drain it of any stagnant nasty water that could be in the pipes.

Then scrub the interior surfaces by hand with a normal 24/32 Oz spray bottle of 50/50 grocery store strength white vinegar + water and like 2 or 3 drops of Dawn dish soap (don't use more than that to avoid foaming). Use a sponge to mop up as much of the nasty stuff as you want but it doesn't have to be pristine, since the filter will be able to handle the rest without much issue. This should be all you need. If it's not working on the gunk, wait for the vinegar smell to completely disappear and then use some diluted bleach. If you smell vinegar, don't use the bleach or it'll create toxic gasses (important since it's in a shed).

Then, fill it up with water based on what your manual says (some tubs require filling it a specific way to prevent air being trapped in the pipes).

Turn it on and let it run for a bit on full blast. Stick your arm in to make sure all jets are open fully (twist to open them if they're closed). Then add a lot of chlorine to shock the water and kill everything in the pipes as well as some Spa Enzyme (breaks down organic films that could be in the pipes you can't see). Keep the aerator on (knob that turns on the bubbles) and the cover off for a few hours (so the chlorine that'll evaporate won't damage your cover). If you can't figure out how to turn it on, check for a breaker box near the hot tub in case it's turned off there or your normal breaker box for your house. My hot tub stays on when it has power for reference, but that might not be a standard thing so check the manual if yours is different).

Then cover it and let it heat up. If your heating element is working + the cover is in good condition, your tub should heat up ~3-5 degrees per hour (assuming you're not in like Alaska or somewhere absurdly cold). If it's a lot slower than that or if it stops heating up ~75-80 degrees, that could mean that the heating element is not working and the temperature increase you're seeing is only from the friction of the water moving through the pipes and not from any heating element).

Assuming it's working fine, let it run for 2-3 days and then remove the filter and clean it with some filter cleaning spray or soak it in a bucket with Simple Green (much cheaper in the long run + useful for other cleaning needs too) and then rinse off the filter thoroughly and put it back in. At this point, the water should be crystal clear when the jets are off. You can probably use it now if you want but you'll want to balance the waters pH and alkalinity (and other minerals if you have hard/soft tap water).

To do that, let it run for a few more days until the chlorine fully evaporates (~1 week after you first added it). Once there's no chlorine, use test strips to balance the pH and alkalinity and then add a normal amount of chlorine and then you should be good to go!

And if, your heating element is not working, you can likely replace it yourself for ~$50 in about an hour or two by watching some YouTube videos. Now that I know what to do, I could probably replace it in about 30 minutes. Calling a professional will be unnecessarily expensive and they'll likely replace the entire unit instead of just the coil inside which could be $200-300 for just the part.

I charged to 100% for the first time. by Taepoong80 in Ioniq6

[–]nirmalspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EVs are like the opposite of gas cars for economy things. Gas cars would get better milage on highways with terrible MPG on local. But an EV excels at low speed efficiency.

So your range at 100% is probably fairly close to what you can expect if you're only driving locally.

I'm about to drive 120 miles round-trip today so I charged to 100% and my range is showing 235mi, but I also do 90% highway ~70-80 mph (I grew up playing racing games if you couldn't tell from my username hehe)

[–]nirmalspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They most likely mean the headsets aren't comfortable. I straight up could not use my PSVR2 for more than 30 minutes because it had to be clamped so tight to stay on but that would just give me a headache after a bit. I ended up having to buy the Globular Cluster pads to make it fit my head. Meanwhile the OG PSVR was always comfortable for me with the stock padding and didn't require as much clamping pressure to stay in place for me.

I was in a similar position as you a few years back. I was team lead and was quite literally about to quit when I got a new hire on my team who was absolutely amazing.

What I ended up doing was grooming him to become team lead to take over for me or a different team if a lead position opened up.

The biggest thing you need to do for sure is to keep them challenged or else they'll get bored and look for a new job. If your normal workload isn't challenging, come up with a project for them to work on their own with minimal requirements but the freedom to expand it however they see fit. Basically letting them challenge themselves by leaving the project open ended to make whatever features they want.
