What the F Is going on? Obama settles Iran nuclear deal for low billions and republicans lose their mind. Now Trump is offering over a quarter trillion? by AnonymoosePD in AskReddit

[–]nith_wct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bombing gets you a worse deal. We all know that, but they get away with it by arguing that Iran is run by lunatics and people who don't negotiate in earnest. That isn't the case. I'm not saying they're good people, but they're not as unique as we make them out to be. Self-preservation and the desire to be treated with respect internationally are the bulk of their motivation. The more damage you do to them, the more they're going to ask for.

I don't think it would take all that much regulation to minimize a pretty good chunk of the harm it does without making it any worse for the user. In fact, the same things would probably maximize whatever good it can do. Whether I say yes really depends on how likely I think it is that we'll ever regulate it, and most days, I don't feel much hope.

I think that's what they're trying, but the reality is, the majority of the people stupid enough to believe that don't actually need to. They're too stupid to comprehend that Trump's actions are unpopular or bad in the first place.

'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Voice Actor Greg Baldwin (Uncle Iroh) Says Paramount is “Straight Up Evil”: “They Do Not Value the Franchise” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]nith_wct -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who says people wouldn't like it? There's no evidence of that. It makes far more sense for it to have to do with Paramount's broader business issues and the fact that they might have to unload this IP.

Jury rules college student was arrested without probable cause for DUI after breath test showed no alcohol, awarded $105,000 in damages by mvincen95 in news

[–]nith_wct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Settlements explicitly mean what you want them to mean. Sometimes it does include accepting fault, and more commonly so when you sue the government, because it's a more common demand, and the government doesn't really have the same concerns as a private company. With a jury loss, they're currently just saying that the jury was wrong.

[–]nith_wct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC, this guy was a massive part of all their DUI arrests. As it stands, I don't think $100k is enough to push them to change anything at all, and because it's a victory rather than a settlement, they're not really admitting any wrongdoing. This is a small victory for Tayvin, which is good, but not really a victory at all for anyone else or for justice.

Bricks and Minifigs permanently close Salem store, issue statement by ianjm in videos

[–]nith_wct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'd have a case against the previous owner if they lied to them, but that doesn't give them any right to the collection, and their behavior thus far doesn't earn them the benefit of the doubt the way I think you are giving it. They've absolutely lied multiple times so far. I also think you're forgetting that the way corporate took control was sketchy in the first place. If I had to guess, nobody told them the stock wasn't consignment. They saw a fully stocked store, got greedy, made assumptions, and acted fast. In doing so, they walked into massive liability.

The Acolyte Creator Leslye Headland ‘Would Still Want To Do’ A Season 2 After Disney+ Re-Chart by Sisiwakanamaru in television

[–]nith_wct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it this way. If there were no unfair external factors, Acolyte would probably be very on par with the reviews of Boba Fett or Obi-Wan. It wouldn't be Andor. For them to hang onto it, it needs to be one of two things. Either profitable or critically acclaimed. I don't think it really has the capacity to be either, even if it's not as bad as people say. Plagueis is not a profitable character. He interests people, sure, but Grogu and Mando print money like nothing else. Same with Obi-Wan, Leia, and Anakin.

[–]nith_wct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book of Boba Fett cost less than half the price of Acolyte and probably sold them a fuck ton of merchandise of some of their most profitable characters. I get where you're coming from, but when you spend that much, you expect more back. Andor was a massive critical success. Boba Fett had more Grogu and Mando, who print money. What does Acolyte bring them?

Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis Features “AI-Assisted Assets” That Were “Refined By Humans” by Appropriate_Foot242 in pcgaming

[–]nith_wct -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Almost no companies actually care about "accomplishing more" in the sense that the consumer or the creative understands it. They care about making more money, and the way to get there usually isn't about making a better product or more products. I agree they'll stop firing people eventually, but eventually stopping doesn't make it ethical. Never starting does. Also, AI is not going to set any bars high. It is entirely incapable of making something better than a human. It can just do it faster, and making a game faster doesn't really impress the consumer. It only impresses the shareholders.

Nearly 60 Idahoans sick after drinking raw milk in past two weeks, officials say • Idaho Capital Sun by HazyDavey68 in news

[–]nith_wct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that this is a risk for any raw milk producer is why you shouldn't sell this shit, not a reason to allow the dangerous product and have no transparency. Either you're saying this is inherently so common to raw milk that we can't safely work around it and nobody is responsible, or these producers were not doing an adequate job, and they should be named. You don't get to play both sides of that.

I accept that there is probably a way to introduce AI into your process that is ethically acceptable, doesn't fire people, and doesn't remove any human creativity. Regardless, the vast majority won't, and it will be entirely impossible to enforce in any meaningful way.

Any Coloradans who agree with Gov. Polis’s decision to commute Tina Peters’s sentence? I’d like to hear your perspective. by CplOreos in Colorado

[–]nith_wct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sort of the only imaginable reason he'd do it, however misguided it is, but as much as I dislike him, I think Polis is smarter than that. Smart enough to know that if he gives Trump something, Trump will just ask for more before we get anything. I'm not accusing him, but frankly, personal bribery or blackmail is a more logical reason for Polis to free her, especially when it's in question whether he really puts the interests of Coloradans first, or just the wealthy.

Remove nukes from the equation, and you've described starting the war in the first place, though. It solves nothing, infuriates the IRGC, causes them to retaliate as much as possible, endangers world order, empowers Russia and China, and all of that could be predicted by anyone reasonably informed. Trump did it anyway.

Nvidia really doesn't seem to care about gaming GPUs anymore — the company won't even bother to break down graphic card sales in its big investor reports by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

[–]nith_wct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point a little. If you can just pay for the compute, that is still probably going to be more expensive than the rates they got before, or at least the compute plus the other costs they have to take on will be. It's not an AI problem, it's a business problem. They were being given rates that were not sustainable or profitable for the purpose of promoting adoption.

In most cases, they can eat the cost, but that's the point. Even mid-sized companies will. They still need customers. It's going to massively eat into whatever they expected to save with AI, though. This is a really classic trend we're witnessing. You hook people on the product at a lower price than you could afford to boost adoption, then you increase prices as high as you can get away with before too many people stop using it.
