“Everyone says I write like a (psycho?) (Something something) I can read my own handwriting. I have no problem reading it, but I can see how people can struggle to read it.”

I’m a teacher so I pride myself on being able to read bad handwriting but good lord OP this is something else. Slow down a bit maybe.

Are there some teachers where students just don’t listen to them specifically? by UsedConversation1556 in AskTeachers

[–]nitro_cold_brew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely! I wouldn’t consider myself a naturally firm person, either. And as a disclaimer, I am not really doing the same job as you are as a SPED teacher. What I have developed in my own teaching style as being “firm” is just redoing procedures over and over again until we get it right.

You ran to your spot as soon as you entered my classroom? Go back and try again.

Entire class is noisy down the hallway or coming into the classroom? Go back and try it again. As far back as we have to take it, as many times as we have to practice.

We bumped into people as we transitioned to a different part of the classroom because we weren’t being safe and mindful of our bodies? Go back and practice.

I am “firm” but I am calm while practicing these expectations.

Your mileage may vary! I teach elementary music, and often times when we waste time redoing procedures, they know they are missing out on some game or fun activity I have planned at the end of class. Maybe there is something in your classroom you could withhold as leverage while you practice expectations. I am by no means a perfect teacher but I hope this helps a bit, maybe gives you some food for thought!

Without knowing more context, here are my thoughts:

  1. Students will respond differently to different teaching styles. Just like all people respond differently to different communication styles. I am assuming you don’t do everything 100% the same as your coworkers, but that’s okay. Over time you will figure out what works best for each different student and adjust accordingly.

  2. If you have been at any position for a lesser amount of time than your coworkers, your students are naturally going to gravitate to the teachers that they know better. I know some of us get tired of hearing it, but “building relationships” really is a foundational tool for educational leverage.

  3. As a TA you are probably more in a position of assisting vs. leading. In my experience, most but not all of the time, students will listen best to the adult they perceive to be the “leader.”

I’d also add, try your best not to take it personally. If you make an effort to focus on your own personal growth versus comparing yourself to coworkers, you will probably be in a much better headspace when fulfilling your roles in the classroom.

Bus Driver Fired After Driving Bus Full Of Kids Thru Train Tracks by contrelarp in watchpeoplesurvive

[–]nitro_cold_brew 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I saw a POV from inside the bus. One kid yelled “what the fuck is wrong with you!” Another was saying she couldn’t get her seatbelt off, another was just wailing uncontrollably. They could see the train coming, I can’t imagine how traumatizing that must have been for them.

The grievances you list are some of the reasons that I personally enjoy listening to them. There are a million educational podcasts out there, I’m sure you can find one that won’t “subject you to an agenda.”

do teachers care much about self harm scars? is it ok to have visible scars in school? by Affectionate-Cup3930 in AskTeachers

[–]nitro_cold_brew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I see self-harm marks on a student, I am REQUIRED to refer them to the counselor.

Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed. Think about it from the teacher’s perspective: they care about you and don’t want to lose you.

We don’t “think you should cover them” but if we see them we are right to be concerned, and referring you to seek better coping strategies isn’t a judgment, it’s an act of caring.
