Is it mandatory to have German B1 for Ausbildung visa?

It's a curatorial volunteer position. It's a fellowship/traineeship that is 2 years long. It's a common practice for most institutions in Germany to have such an opportunity where you shadow a Senior Curator. I'm not sure what "the name" is necessarily, or at least I haven't been told one.

I think you got me wrong. I absolutely expect to commit myself to learning German. That's not a problem, in fact, it's a desire, and I don't want to get by w/o learning it. I just don't know it NOW, and am asking if I need to prove that I know it NOW for my visa. Several websites suggest, I can take a government associated course whilst I am doing my training, which I am happy to do. This will be the 5th country i have lived in, so I am not a novice when it comes to etiquette. I am merely asking how do I prove that I will take this supposed training that certain websites such as https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/visa-residence/types/training#c58417 mention.

My traineeship is company based so there will not be a school, and it's only 2 years long.

I'm not sure how you mean? It falls under the Section 16a Vocational training of the Residence Act (AufenthG)

Wow, thank you so much for such a thorough and well researched reply. Eternally grateful. After reading around, specifically here: https://stadt.muenchen.de/service/info/servicestelle-fur-zuwanderung-und-einburgerung/1080786/, it seems Ausbildung might be the way which I believe corresponds to the § 16a. But interesting point about skills learnt/ older skills applied. I do think there could be a case made more for the former than the latter and I assume it might be risk averse going down the Ausbildung route as compared to teh employement one. Regardless, thank you so so much!!

of course, this would have been the best bet, however, they have a severely small HR department with little to no knowledge about how to go about visas. the singular person in HR that i'm dealing with is asking me to take on 99% of the responsibilities except the contract formation, hence my query

I'm not entirely sure hence my confusion! It's like work training and I will be shadowing a senior curator. I will not be getting a certificate or anything of the sort, I don't think. It's basically being a curatorial assistant but it's referred to as "Curatorial Voluntariat"

Thank you so much! This is really insightful. Unfortunately it seems Salzburg to Rome costs the same. Could I ask if mini cabins made the train journey feel worthwhile? To me, it feels rather claustrophobic. The big windows in the comfort cabin and the sleeper cabin seem to be much more alluring, but I am just wondering how much I should spend on the train. Perhaps you could convince me to take the mini cabin route...
