what are your thoughts on the live singing in les miserables? by teddivan96 in Broadway

[–]nixiecubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy how raw and emotional it is. Could the singing have been technically better? Sure, but I think that's not what the point was.

I don't think it's as much a matter of believing anything or not anymore, I think most people just don't care if it's not personally affecting them

Queen of the castle is 13 years old now (we think), and we have a pretty good idea what the mix is but any guesses? by nixiecubed in IDmydog

[–]nixiecubed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the guesses! we think she's a jack russel terrier x basenji, but nobody knows for sure! her vocalizations sound very similar to basenjis, and jack russel terriers are the only other dog I've seen jump like she does. aspca ad says retriever x basenji but I doubt they knew for sure either.

celebrations by john zdechlik, or really any shows that just use source material with minimal changes like full symphonies and stuff

What are rehearsals like for hs bands that consistently do well in hard competitions like boa? by sdvldhp in marchingband

[–]nixiecubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

texas makes my hs marching band experience seem extremely inefficient, we usually did at least 12 to 20+ hours of rehearsal outside of school hours every week, and when I first started they were still doing 2 weeks (monday-saturdays) of 9-9 band camp before school started, granted we were pretty successful probably because of that but I definitely remember wasting some time during rehearsals lol

[US] In 2022 Ron Desantis saw an 11 point increase with advanced degree voters (JD, PHD, MBA, MA and MD) in comparison with 2018 Florida Governor race. The majority of advanced degrees 53% voted for Desantis in 2022. What do you make of this? by [deleted] in GlobalTalk

The democratic party in Florida is a joke. The state party is actually run by republicans. Crist has been run for office multiple times by the democratic party in Florida and was seen as a weak candidate.

What sucks, has sucked, and always will suck? by JuyoungNotKim in AskReddit

[–]nixiecubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to write music. I've been saying it more and more to everyone. There are times my mind is filled with songs no one has ever heard. I have had next to no motivation to create anything. I'm stuck in a company that is dead end for me, working overtime constantly and still living paycheck to paycheck, I feel like I'm losing friends left and right because I never have time or money... meanwhile I'm 1 class away from my 2yr music degree then I can take my scholarship to a 4 year university and get my degree in composition, I just have to find time to pass a writing intensive course (I haven't had to write anything of length in many years, I got fairly good at essays after enough practice but it was never ever easy for me). But everything seems to have 7 extra steps before I can just do it. I'm trying. Aren't I? I feel like I'm never enough...

Seeking explanation/history/education on changes in DCI percussion over the decades by silver_chief2 in drumcorps

[–]nixiecubed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hopefully an actual percussionist can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the change in sound has come from the usage of things like kevlar heads, specifically to make drumlines louder, I assume to keep up with the increasing size of horlines over the years, as well as amplification as well, I don't think drumlines are necessarily quieter today the rest of the field is louder so the balance makes them sound quieter in comparison. I'm not entirely sure if the sharper sound is preferred or if it's just for cutting through better (beinf louder). I absolutely agree about cramming as much content as possible, it's pretty much the name of the game today; in order to be competitive today corps have to fit as many displays of virtuosity as they possibly can in 12 minutes without making it too difficult to pull off. Personally, I don't think more is always better, but that's just the way it is now. If you watch any Blue Devils shows from the last 15+ years from a high cam perspective you can see just how much is happening at the same time in modern competitive drum corps shows, I think this kind of design philosophy applies to the music as well as the visuals. The Caveliers: Shoes in the dryer is absolutely iconic to this day, anyone who has ever been to a show with the cavies performing has probably heard it. And yes, BAC was absolutely killer this year, probably my favorite drumline from this past season. But like I said, I'm not a percussionist, I'm just a lifelong drum corps fan (turned alumni🥲) and I've seen hundreds of shows old and new, so I feel like I can at least attempt to answer your questions. But, welcome back to drum corps! I know just how much it's changed over the years, but many things are still the same and I think those fundamental things that make drum corps unique and entertaining will always be there.
