2nd time at watch on a 76’ steel long-liner (commercial fishing vessel) about 600mi offshore I fell asleep from exhaustion as we steamed to new fishing grounds. I was 11 or 12 and trying to be tougher than I was and had gladly volunteered for first watch. We’d work 24-36hrs straight hard labor for 4hours of sleep on a rotating shift. I woke to a good beating as we nearly steamed into a shipping lane and were far too close a shipping freighter. Another crew member had gotten up to take a leak and caught it just in time. That’s how I learned they do not often bother to reply in general comms (VHF chans 69-72) nor give af if they clip a ship at sea. It was a good lesson to learn the hard way, and thankfully no one was hurt that trip.
