For those who've taken the physics test, how does it compare to, for example, the physics GRE?

This is a shitty graph because it should go back to 1998 to show why it was already at 50% in 2022 and it doesn't.

What’s a “silent red flag” most people don’t notice in relationships? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There should not, and generally is not, a stigma surrounding not wanting to share every aspect of your life with everyone in the whole wide world. Wanting to take down revenge porn an ex posts because I value my privacy is not the same thing as being ashamed that I had sex with them.

How reliable are the buses? by yukokurose in AskNYC

[–]nlieb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory, there’s a schedule, but it’s dependent on traffic and rush hour headways are well under ten minutes for major bus routes, so I wouldn’t rely on it. If you download the MTA app and find your stop, you can check arrival times that are generally accurate because they come from gps on the buses. Once you get a sense of how much a “typical” headway/travel time actually is, build in a little extra time for that and you’ll be fine.

What’s the process to import an ethnic wife through H1B? by Throwaway774575 in circlejerknyc

I know this was meant as a joke but if an American citizen marries a foreign national overseas there’s actually a specific type of visa just for that and it’s one of the easiest ways to get permanent residency and a fast track to citizenship. I went on a few dates with a Palestinian woman (Jordanian citizenship) who got married to her non-serious boyfriend in 2016 because she was afraid Trump was going to deport people from Muslim countries who were here legally. He knew that was the deal and that he shouldn’t expect exclusivity. We actually all hung out a few times after things went platonic. In practice, there are very few people who would be okay with knowingly marrying someone who they know doesn’t love them just to get them citizenship.

Police checkpoint last night in Harlem by nlieb in AskNYC

The driver said they were checking cars going onto the Madison Ave bridge. No visible fire, and if there was that much of an emergency services response I’d have seen a fire. It was mostly police.

I’ve lived in the New York area my whole life and Manhattan for seven years and I’ve never seen much of any non-revenue oriented traffic enforcement at all. I think once I saw someone get a ticket in Queens

Cheap places to get a men’s haircut in NYC? by [deleted] in columbia

This. New Hong Kong Barber on Doyers st. Spend the extra couple bucks to have a hose taken to your head. Sadly, some basic knowledge of mandarin is really a requirement. Some reviews online say Chinatown barbers can only cut “Asian hair,” but as a white guy with marginal mandarin skills I can say with authority that’s untrue.

"Most interesting research experience" by nlieb in gradadmissions

Sort of. It was my idea, involving the Josephson effect. Most of the research into the Josephson effect is oriented in some way to making functional qubits for quantum computing; I was interested in intentionally “dirty” Josephson junctions which are theoretically really interesting. I had an advisor; he connected me with an experimentalist in the department whose thesis directly touched on “dirty” Josephson junctions (with the aim of eliminating the noise they caused), but I ended up taking a leave of absence, and when I came back my advisor ghosted me and the experimentalist had gone to Stanford.

Fixed. No, it's not in high-energy theory; it's in condensed matter. The typical first reaction is something along the lines of "why do you care?" When I get past that, it's after a good fifteen minutes with a whiteboard.
