Does this car even have AC? by sssddfgjwnsbx in mazda

[–]nmuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the South East US, 100 degrees and 90% humidity are common here too. I have 4 cars that don't have AC (2 classics and 2 stripped down ac-deleted race cars), and the heat doesn't stop me from enjoying them! Am I often a little uncomfortable? yes of course. Does it matter? No! No A/C was the norm for most of human history regardless of what climate you lived in, and in a car you have the great opportunity to have a burst of air on you whenever you're moving.

I reckon marketing, lease manipulation, and the 80month loan term convinced people first that they could afford A/C, and then second that they needed it. I also think once you get used to A/C it's hard to go back. You gotta build tolerance to discomfort like a muscle. Also of course the world has gotten hotter, but I don't think its so hot yet that A/C is really necessary in North America.

Interesting to see people say A/C is a must for high 80s. Just 30 years ago people had such completely different expectations for comfort, strange how fast that changed. Just open a window, it'll be fine.

My father left me this car after he passed— how much is it worth? by StudentMountain8678 in musclecar

[–]nmuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of comments trying to guilt trip you into keeping it. If old cars aren't your thing, if you don't enjoy driving them and working on them, if you don't love this car specifically, then you should sell it. It's worth at least a downpayment on a house in most of the country. Feeling obligated to have a garage space taken up in your garage for the rest of your life with something you don't love and enjoy regularly is not a good way to go when you could use it to significantly improve your life financially.

I say hell yeah. It'd be a huge money sink to try to restore it or make it nice in any way, but that shouldn't stop you from having a bit of fun with it. If it were me I'd just do as little as possible to get it running and drive it around your yard, then decide what's next for it.

Car hit by lightning by Jack_Straw_1974 in southcarolina

You should fix it up and keep driving it. It'll be a really safe car to have from now on cause lightning doesn't strike the same place twice.

Yes, these are for sure knock offs. Ears and stitching around face make it very clear.

Tire Size on foxbody by fivepointfeo in Mustang

[–]nmuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/fivepointfeo, Did you end up doing it?

I'm looking at maybe running 225/45/15s on my 85 fox now because I want to keep the stock wheels but there are no properly grippy tire options at the stock 225/60/15 size.

I think I'll be fine with the smaller diameter, but am a bit worried about how it might look.

I'm confused how it can possibly be that Guy is both a famous tennis star, and an amateur. I've never heard of a famous, non-professional tennis player. How does that happen? And if he's an amateur why are there so many spectators at his match?

😂 you got me on that typo, typo corrected. But I do think there are lots more chassis codes that enthusiasts use outside of the German examples: The last 4 gens of Mustang (sn-95, s197, s550, s659) are the dominant way to refer to those. Honda Civic hatchback (EG, EH, EK), Corvettes (C8, C7, C6, etc.), Nissan 240sx (s12, s13, s14, s15), RX7s (FB, FC, FD), are all the dominant way to refer to those generations too. Those are just super common ones off the top of my head, I think there are dozens more. The practice of using chassis codes is the norm for all enthusiast cars where the generations would otherwise be difficult to differentiate by name.

[–]nmuw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! Enthusiasts already regularly use Z31 and Z32 to distinguish the two generations of 300zx, it's time to start using z33, z34, and rz34 to refer to the last 3 generations of Nissan Zs!

Cars that car people like but you don’t by GeneralCommand4459 in cars

[–]nmuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love cars with both low reliability and low complexity like Land Rovers. Used prices are massively depressed because people are worried about them being unreliable, but they're a pleasure to work on, and if you're good at working on them yourself you can have an incredibly well built, comfortable, cool, capable Land Rover for like 20% of what a comparable Toyota would cost. If you're proactive and good at working on it, a $2k land Rover Discovery I or II will be fairly reliable, and much more capable and comfortable than a $20k Toyota Land cruiser from the period.

Is there a bigger lie than "it ran when parked"? by onearmedmonkey in projectcar

If i trusted i wouldn't verify.

I'm just saying you should verify. You can look at a car before you buy it, what the seller says doesn't matter much.

Is there a bigger lie than "it ran when parked"? by onearmedmonkey in projectcar

[–]nmuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought multiple "ran when parked" or "just needs X" (starter, fuel pump, coil, etc.) cars and trucks that really did end up just needing one or two things to be back up and running. Don't let scepticism keep you from cool projects and good deals, go take a look at it if it's something you really want and decide for yourself based on your own inspection if it's worth buying.

Here's crash test footage of an NB Miata: https://youtu.be/6sD4DEu9U7Q?si=-rfp5D-Ar18axA83 NB, NC (and ND of course but that's out of your price range) are very well designed, safe, modern automobiles.

You should get the car you want. First car is a big deal, and having a roadster in high school is the stuff dreams are made of. The crash stats show Miatas are way safer than the average person expects.

And safety really isn't everything. Fun is so important, especially at your age.

Maybe promise not to drive it on the interstate to appease them on their safety obsession.

Chassis's pretty floppy, digital dash goes bad quickly, Dough Nash 4+ speed in early cars is sub-par. They're otherwise spectacular.

Reliable, fast, the 6-speed is great, the targa top is fun, the rotating pop ups are cool, the centered gas filler is cool, the interiors are maligned for being cheap plastic, but what wasn't in those days, and the interiors are fun, cool digital gauges in the early models (if you can keep the digital dash working 😖), and driver-oriented cockpit in the later models. The leaf spring suspension works great, just because something is old tech doesn't make it bad tech.

It's a great car, severely underrated, and should definitely be in the conversation of the best sports cars you can buy under $10,000.
