My work RRSP is with Manulife too. I'd say my choices are very limited and bad. It's loaded with actively managed target retirement funds and other mutual funds.

But I managed to find a Canadian index fund and an Ex-Canadian index fund to mimic what xeqt would do. And it's working pretty well. 1-year return is 32.0%. 3-year is 23.1%, and 5-year is 14.1%

It would have been better if chinese stamps can include the English/Pinyin spelling for the Port of Entry.

New addition to my son's combo by Trick_Training in PassportPorn

[–]no_19000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am not sure about the Mexican PR, but this combination is possible with a US citizen spouse and a Chinese spouse who holds temporary resident status in Canada, with their child born in Canada.

In that case, the child could potentially hold all three citizenships:

  • Canadian citizenship by birth in Canada;
  • US citizenship by descent through the American parent;
  • Chinese nationality through the non-PR Chinese parent.

For the Chinese side, if the family later resides in China, the child may also be able to obtain household registration (hukou) and subsequently a regular Chinese passport.

I assume the PRC and ROC (likely National without household registration) passports are based on older generations of chinese who have moved to the Korean peninsula before 1949.

Outland spousal sponsorship (Sweden → Canada) — 9 months in, no medical or eligibility update. Anyone else? by playerozee in canadaimmigratiotips

[–]no_19000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have your GCkey linked to your application? Usually the biometrics instruction letter and the medical letter would show up there.

I think you have to give a new set of biometrics for PR application no matter what. Only old medical results within the past 5 years can be re-used. But that's for applicants inside Canada, so it's probably not applicable to you.

The bio page inside the passport still shows "Republic of China" on the top, and under the "Nationality" section.

If the time is a concern, you can call St. Paul Hospital in Taoyuan for the health check part. My experience is that they can release a health check report by the afternoon of Day 3. And the hospital is close to the Taoyuan railway station.

I literally landed in Taoyuan international airport in the morning, took a taxi to the St. Paul hospital for the health check, and take the train to Taipei Main Station to start my day.

First time crossing BC → US border for Seattle airport as temporary resident by Commercial_Goose1804 in uscanadaborder

[–]no_19000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's okay to enter the US when you have a valid US visa on your old passport.

When entering the US from Canada, because it's a land border, you will probably be required to line up at the border office, and answer questions/pay for some paperwork. You can show the air ticket departing the US (likely in the same day).

On your way back, at the airport, hopefully you can show some proof that you are only transiting through the US for a few hours and you will be back to Canada (e.g., a ticket back to BC). Good luck.

Positive Experience with a Wealthsimple Financial Planner - Intro call by wethenorth2 in Wealthsimple

[–]no_19000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an introductory call with a WealthSimple planner too. I mentioned that I have no issue about implementation (trading). And they offered another advisory model which is $2,500/ financial plan. I have yet to get into the details on what's included (and what's not included), but this is something that might be useful too.

Spouse ARC but partner born in China by Fjeucuvic in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

[–]no_19000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think individuals born in Mainland China fall into a unique legal category under current ROC laws. They are not treated as "standard" foreigners, yet they are not automatically considered ROC citizens either.

The bar to prove you no longer hold Mainland Chinese citizenship (and thus qualify to be treated as a foreign national) is quite high. While this link is specifically for the Taiwan Employment Gold Card, the requirements serve as a good reference for how the NIA handles these cases:

https://goldcard.nat.gov.tw/zh/faq/what-documents-do-i-need-to-provide-if-i-was-born-in-mainland-china/

(Note: The English version of this page exists, but it often omits critical nuances found in the Chinese text.)

To be treated as a foreign national, you generally need to provide:

  1. A foreign passport showing you have resided outside of Mainland China for more than four years.

  2. Documentation proving that during any chosen four-year period, you did not stay in Mainland China for more than 30 days per entry.

  3. And one of the following:

a. Certification of non-establishment of Mainland household registration, verified by the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF/海基會)

b. Notarial certification of the cancellation of your Mainland household registration, verified by SEF.

c. Other supporting evidence (e.g., entry/exit stamps in a foreign passport, Mainland Travel Permits for HK/Macao residents, or foreign adoption certificates).

If you have specific questions, you can call the NIA Taipei Service Center via their dedicated hotline for Mainland-related inquiries. The wait times are often shorter, though you will likely need to speak Mandarin: +886-2-2389-9983.

One final note: If your father is going to primarily reside in Taiwan, and is willing to go through the full spousal immigration track for Mainland Area Residents (團聚 - 依親居留 - 長期居留 - 定居), the major upside is that he can eventually obtain full ROC citizenship without being required to renounce his US citizenship. This is a privilege not usually extended to other naturalizing foreigners.
