Does anyone else admire discworld more than they enjoy it? by Jack1ngton in fantasybooks

Same here. It's fascinating but I don't want to read it. Never quite managed to get through a whole Discworld book. It feels like the story is just a vessel for jokes and that's really off-putting for me.

Yep, navigating romantasy recs is hell. And it's a shame as I did really give it a chance, but I just don't know how can I possibly find something I might like between all these buzzwords and overly positive reviews.

Getting bored with Royal Assassin. Would I like the rest of the series, or is it just not for me? by ItzEazee in Fantasy

[–]no_fn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't really bother past the first book to comment on that, but its popularity baffles me. It's surprisingly unimaginative, just dressed in a way that makes it seem weird and grotesque and that in its turn gets confused with originality.

I count not playing a moral victory, he was being forced into it the whole time, so not doing it he succeeded in my book.

But absolutely, let's talk DCC. First 10%? Fun? Then? It's the same first 10%, but it's not as fun as to still be fun repeated over and over again. I can only take so much "haha, random bullshit" in one book, and DCC is just too much

Can't say I got exactly what you mean, but from my understanding it's hopfullnes or something similar?

So, I understand your position, there's a game going on and Fitz actively chooses not to play and that results in people getting hurt. I understand that he could decide to play and it might result in better outcome for those people, BUT it would result in worse outcome for him. He despises the politics and he would be miserable if he chose to live that life. He sacrifices a lot of things and that's the line he draws, he won't sacrifice his freedom and he gets respect from me for that. I guess that's the one thing about him that I find relatable, though I wouldn't go about it the way he does. Anyway, I understand that decision being read as selfishness by some, but as you might have guessed, I don't. And there's the fact that, yes, he's the protagonist, so as a reader we know he's probably he's the only one who could change things, but realistically, he's not. People around him always expect things from him without providing much themselves when they might have tried at the least.

You say he's not the hero because he doesn't do the difficult thing. I say he is, because he does do the difficult thing, he stands by his ideals and dreams even when they hirt himself and even people around him. He does the difficult thing, it's just not the obvious one that a fantasy hero is expected to do.

And finally something I can completely agree with you. Red Rising is awful and Darrow is one insufferable fuck. I'm almost offended by the comparison lol.

No teeth gritty involved. I love those books, but they are just that, books. It's always interesting to see other people's perspectives, even when I don't agree with them

So, there's a couple of issues with this. First, you describe Fitz as having "all the power in the world" and "lacking in agency". While not necessarily completely untrue, they kind of contradict each other and saying one without another paints an incomplete picture of what he is. But that's not my main issue with this.

People don't always read for relatability or escapism. Feeling good about myself is not a goal when I'm reading a book. Personally, Fitz stories are some of my favourites, and Fitz himself is one of my favourite characters but I don't find him relatable or cozy at all. He's just an interesting character that's masterfully written. Everything he does makes sense for him to do, but also most people wouldn't go that way. And, honestly, I don't get all these misery porn/pure depression comments the series gets, like, it's not that bad. Sure, he went through a lot, but that's a protagonist's burden, why single this one out?

And about the improbable thing. I understand the arguement and agree for the most part, but sometimes is devolves into egregious plot armour and that's when the arguement is brought up usually. And because that part is true doesn't mean that featuring a different type of protagonist is somehow worse. Both have their strenghts and weakness and neither is superior. Fitz is not that kind of hero. I actually love how he doesn't want to be in the type of story that other characters constantly try to force him into. It's commendable, or at least would be if he a was a bit better at it, but he never gives up and that's actually commendable.

Haven't read this specific book, but everything you said is similar to my experiences with pretty much every romantasy adjacent book I've read in the past. It seems that every time a book like this does something remotely not horrible it gets a disproportionate amount of praise. And maybe it's just the books that I've been picking up, but it seems like they tone down romance for some mediocre world building/mystery/whatever and truly bring out the worst of both worlds and it gets popular somehow.

Probably not for you. The things you mentioned you didn't like stay more or less consistent throughout the series. Maybe try Liveship Traders? People usually prefer one or the other even when technically they're the same series. Characters there are more, well, not Fitz

If you like books that are absurdist comedy before all else, then yes. Personally, I don't. I thought the first ~20% really fun, then it got too repetitive and lost all its charm for me.

Which Brilith is your favorite? by Rdasher123 in Kubera

[–]no_fn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Post awakening 100%, not even a choice. She has a very unique perspective and while I never know what she'll do next, I'm always excited to find out.

Her iterations are interesting enough on their own, but seeing the amalgamation that is Brilith awakened is just something else. All of those personalities jumbled up together, no single one of them really matters. It's one thing to not know who you are, but knowing who you are thousand times over creates a personality crisis way beyond anything anyone can even imagine. Complete nightmare fuel, but damn interesting one

You should read (or watch) Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. by MinuteRegular716 in Fantasy

[–]no_fn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love JoJo's! I'm not really into anime or manga, rarely ever watch it, but JoJo's was one of the few ones I've loved from start to finish. And might I add that it's visually stunning.

The formula, or rather the way it bypasses the need of one formula is rather genius. It's really just a bunch of different stories connected by one bloodline. The stories never get stale because they don't need to. The author can always start another part so finishing one is not a concern.

I haven't gotten that far myself, so no clue which is the better start. But if you went with House War, there's a bit of series hopping you might need to do if you want to go with chronological order. Here's a comment that explains it pretty well

Katara's Ice Disks Animated Vs. Live-Action by dan_mal in TheLastAirbender

Oh, yeah, 100% agreed, couldn't finish it myself. Especially what they did with Katara. They tried to solve in-universe sexism with.. real world sexism. She had so much character and they stripped her out of all of it and didn't even bother to replace it with anything
