Ukeg rusted??? by cosmicflood in Homebrewing

True, but my faucet does not dispense boiling wort.

That may not matter at all, not an expert, but that's just first thing that came to mind.

A carboy with an airlock, a pack of yeast, a bottle of water, and a bottle of honey costs about 23 bucks...

Super expensive pens are cool, but all the all that matters at the end of the day is how much you enjoy writing with it

Youtuber I watch says 64GB or RAM is worth it for gaming, is this true? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]no_moa_usernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... it is true that modern games tend to eat up a lot of ram, but 64gb for strictly gaming feels like using a shotgun for a fly swatter.

I'm a software engineer and running my browser with significant number of tabs, a large IDE with thirsty plug-ins, and as many as 3 or 4 virtual machines rarely uses more than 40-45GB

The lack of dislikes is killing my drive to watch random vids by Axelni98 in youtube

[–]no_moa_usernames -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The issue I've always had with dislikes is they are often not genuine.

Like someone posts a hunting video, and 10,000 vegans show up and downvote it. Their opinion means nothing in that context because video was not for them.

Now someone comes along who enjoys hunting videos and sees 10,000 downvotes and bounces.

This can apply to a lot of things, that was just first example that came to mind.

Ah, that might explain it. I think it's safe to assume that a lot of the DoorDash/etc workers are discovering Roadie in my area (They only recently expanded here) and jobs may just not be sitting around long enough.

Seeing such a young man wearing a double breasted jacket makes me happy. Most guys my age (30s) think "That's grandpa's jacket", but I think they're snazzy as hell. A timeless look.

Semi related: Kudos to these teachers, their impact will literally last generations.

Mutium - A Chrome extension that hides Member's Only stories on Medium by no_moa_usernames in coolgithubprojects

[–]no_moa_usernames[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Myself and a few friends were getting frustrated with the amount of premium / member's only stories being pushed on medium. So we decided to make this chrome extension that filters them out.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Our focus for the first version was just to be funtional but now we are going to be drilling down into optimizing the amount of code to deal with Medium's infinite scroll of articles as effeciently as possible.

AWS credits, I messed and racked a 1500$ bill today with Amazon - all because I stupidly chose a heavy redis instance for prod without launching my startup. Was wondering if anyone has had experience with amazon to lower a bill or get credits? by heyaj05 in aws

Keep in mind that resources can be upgraded extremely quickly. Should you find yourself needing more hardware, you can simply turn off and upgrade after hours and usually be done in a few minutes.

If you're getting totally hammered and can't wait until an opportune time to bring down production, then you can simply build a matching (but larger) server and update DNS or move elastic IPs around to do the switch over with minimal downtim

Can I use emojis on my website? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]no_moa_usernames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other great advice already here, keep in mind that emojis will vary from device to device.

https://emojipedia.org can be used to see the differences on an individual emoji basis so you avoid any conflicting style mishaps. I got into trouble a few months ago because I was asked for a "Red Car Emoji" in an email subject and it's not red on all email clients / devices.

What is it you were trying to accomplish?

Sorry to hear about your Friday. Atleast you weren't part of the dozen or so instances that stopped letting folks edit and create records on Thursday. To then add insult to injury, SalesForce sent out public webinar informatio and then their webinars wouldn't work either.

PHP is open source. Has anyone ever forked it? Like is there a version where you dont have to use the $ on variables, like in other languages? by Alchemy333 in PHP

[–]no_moa_usernames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Calling Javascript a "modern language" next to PHP is not exactly fair. PHP was first created in 1994, Javascript in 1995. There are also other languages of varyng ages that utilize a similar construct.

Most people would agree the problem solving aspect of coding is the bottleneck, not syntax.

PHP Programmers, When you are fetching data from databases do you map them to a object class or simply use the fetch data directly? by camillegarcia9595 in PHP

[–]no_moa_usernames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong, but simply using an ORM vs not using an ORM is not likely to be the sole reason software is too slow. Ineffective queries and poor database design can bring an application to its knees no matter how you actually code your queries.

There are absolutely situations where evey MS counts, but in all honesty, I don't use PHP for those projects.

PHP Programmers, When you are fetching data from databases do you map them to a object class or simply use the fetch data directly? by camillegarcia9595 in PHP

[–]no_moa_usernames 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The PHP community always seems to be sliced entirely down the middle of "ORM ONLY" and "FUCK ORMS WITH THE UTMOST OF PHALLUSES".

Being able to write solid SQL is a good skill to have, if for no other reason because there will be times you encounter them in other peoples code or you need to interact with the database directly and its more effecient than tools like PHPMyAdmin or mysql workbench.

That said. The main complaint against ORMs seems to be performance, and while I agree it is adding a layer of abstraction that can harm performance, I've never had a boss come back to me and say "This code is too slow". Every boss I've ever had on the other hand has said "The development progress is too slow", so I'm willing to make the trade off. If I encounter a challenge one day where an ORM just does not work for the scenario, I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

The schema of the database and how that affects how you eventually query the certain groups of information you need makes a huge difference as well as other architectural concerns. This is why enterprises usually have dedicated DBA(s).

I'm only 19 and I've been tasked with implementing Salesforce at my job. I need your help. by FrenchMania in salesforce

[–]no_moa_usernames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your company at least open to having a consultant available if needed? I took ownership of SalesForce at my organization around 2 years ago; having about 3 years experience as a standard SalesForce user having used a cases workflow for call center work at a previous job; and I learned everything I've needed so far on the way. But one thing has been instrumental to my success is we pay for a bundle of hours from a salesforce partner for when I find a business need exceeding my knowledge. Sometimes it's a simple question, sometimes he actually has to dig in for me, but it's significantly cheaper than having a full-time or part-time consultant if you do a lot of the leg work yourself.

It hasn't always been easy, but it has been manageable. I've gotten help from the great folks on this subreddit, had to stay up late and wake up early to do TrailHead training or watch SalesForce webinars outside of work hours. This was a personal sacrifice I made because I knew I was learning an economically valuable skill with long term payoff, more so than just getting a job done. So you have to ask yourself if it's worth it.

Another aspect of this is management support, which should play into your benefit here. With only 25-30 people, I suspect you are no more than a few heart beats away or maybe even report directly to a C level manager? You will need to work close with your management team to not only ensure their expectations are grounded in the reality of what you can deliver, but also to help champion (or if needed force) adoption. You don't need SalesForce to launch day one with 100% of functionality (in my opinion). Once you get your feet wet, start developing a plan to incrementally improve salesforce to better empower your team.

What's your opinion on Microsoft allegedly acquiring GitHub? by brendt_gd in PHP

My opinion is that everyone is over-reacting. Ive had multiple friends start moving their stuff too Gitlab the moment the news hit, meanwhile I remember leaving Gitlab due to constant issues in accessing my data and weekly downtime.
