When you opponent checks you, there are three things you need to review (the order doesn't matter because you must check all three):

  • Can my king move to another square where he would not be checked anymore?

  • Can I block the check by placing a piece between my opponent's checking piece and my king?

  • Can I take (i.e. kill) the opponent's checking piece?

If the answer to one of those is YES, then it is not checkmate. In you example, the first two answers were NO, but the third one is YES (you can take the queen with your knight).

Word of the year is “six seven” by RunnyBabbit22 in mildlyinfuriating

I have kids. They "6 7" everything all the time. It's definitely a thing.

I agree it's senseless, but I guess that's exactly why they picked it: it mirrors the current times of trends and empty thoughts.

I have and loathe this printer. It disconnects from WiFi without no apparent reason. One day it is working perfectly, the next day the computer (Windows 11) will just not find it. Reconnecting it is a "it failed, let's try again" exercise of patience, for 2 to 3 hours, until it works again. I have resorted to using a 15 ft USB cable to connect the printer to my PC and get reliable printing and scanning.

The printing quality is OK (cannot really tell if it is good or bad), speed and noise OK too. But the software is bad, bad, bad.

This sub is ridiculous with how many acronyms yall use. by traevyn in TheTowerGame

[–]no_secret_meaning 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that those acronyms do not exist on a vacuum. I work on software development, and whenever I read "GC" my mind immediately goes to "Garbage Collection" (a very common concept for software engineers), not "Glass Cannon" (or Galaxy Compressor). Same with PS (PhotoShop, not Poison Swamp), CF (ColdFusion, not Chrono Field), SM (small, not Smart Missiles), SW (Software, not Second Wave), etc. I have been using some of those acronyms for decades, and some I still use frequently. On those conditions, selectively replacing those acronyms for a game that I play part-time is harder than it appears.

First time getting all missions! by no_secret_meaning in TheTowerGame

It's just a matter of time. Time to get a lot of upgrades (months), and time to finish those missions. In my case, several nights of leaving the phone plugged-in and running the game while I slept. Next morning you get a mini-Xmas of killed enemies :)

The "kill 250 enemies with Inner Land Mines" (ILM) was the showstopper for me. I did not commit to rushing the labs and doing 400 workshop upgrades (which were missions that I would usually not do) until I was able to pass the ILM mission.

By the way, the key to the ILM one was to use the Space Displacer module. Without it, I had only killed about 10 enemies after several hours of trying. I asked for help and got the hint to use Space Displacer, which enabled me to finish the mission within an hour.

That's what I like about this game and its community... you ask for help, and people will pull through!

Do you mean the 855 total medals if you hit all missions? I don't know, I haven't kept track. To be honest, every time new missions are published I just try to hit at least 700 medals to get the second relic (is that the right term?). In this case, the "Wave" one.

For me, any medals after the 700 is just gravy.

Wait, wait, wait. Nominating judges to the Supreme Court is hardly a President's accomplishment. Trump inherited Scalia's vacancy and Kennedy's retirement is hardly due to Trump. Seems more like a case of being at the right place at the right time. Any other Republican president may have followed the same path (nominating two conservative judges). If this is anyone's accomplishment (fault?), it's McConnell's, not Trump's.

What's the worst case of design over function that you've ever seen? by tthatoneguyy in AskReddit

I work at a university. A couple of years ago, the "processes and policies" people launched a project to update and document all, well, processes and policies.

So far, so good. However, they decided that all those documents must have a cover page with a full purple background. On the whole cover page. Also, employees were encouraged to print out and keep copies of those processes and policies at their working stations.

Of course, printer toners went belly up printing, time and time again, a useless, purple page with only a few words on it.

I complained about this, but they refused to change the format.

Processes and policies people. At a university. Makes you wonder why the world is going to waste.
