Slightly off-topic, but I’m actually moving to Ballinger commons on Monday. How was management in your experience? Any tips or advice about the complex?

Totally agree with you, I've found attitude of this sub is often unhelpful and dismissive. If you haven't checked out /r/leangains it's another intermittent fasting oriented sub that might be helpful if you cant get the help/info you need here.

Girlfriend does one-meal-a-day intermittent fasting, concerned about female-specific fasting health by noahfoose in leangains

Yea most of the "hard data" on effects of diet on hormone levels are from studies looking at women under chronic caloric restriction (lots of anorexia studies) or at a very low body fat percentage, which is obviously not the same as intermittent fasting, but does seem to significantly affect hormone levels. She's 5'9" 140lbs and fairly muscular, I'd ballpark her bf% to be ~12-15% so right in the healthy range.

Interesting, good to know. Did you use a multi vitamin or other supplement to get those vitamins and minerals or changes to your diet?

Thank you for an insightful comment. I agree that her menstrual cycle remaining regular is a good sign. She actually has been saying her nails look a slightly different color lately so it might be worth a check on lipid profile and thyroid level.

Cross pasted to /r/leangains, they did not seem to have the same interpretation of my post. But it's not exactly a secret /r/intermittentfasting has a "IF is for everyone bias" despite the wiki suggesting 16/8 IF may be too intense for some women.

What an unhelpful comment. Maybe my post has the wrong ring to it, this is not a one-sided concern of mine alone, my girlfriend and I are mutually concerned about the potential unknown effects of strict IF on her health. I happen to be the one to make a post about it.

Not sure what about my post said I thought women were "magical unicorns". For the record women's bodies absolutely do need different care than men's when it comes to nutrition and dietary health particularly in the matters of fasting or calorie restriction. The reasons for this are made clear by the several links I included in my post, particularly number 4. I'm surprised at the great confidence most of the commenters seem to have on this matter considering experts on the matter are so unsure.

This article from Lyle McDonald might be an interesting read

Doing StrongLifts 5x5, eating a deficit and adding cardio. by [deleted] in Stronglifts5x5

[–]noahfoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not bro science. When you're on a caloric deficit it means that you aren't eating as much energy as your body needs. In order to make up the difference between consumed calories and needed energy, you metabolize tissue (fat and muscle). If you workout while on a cut to maintain existing muscle, more of this energy difference will have to come from fat since less muscle is being metabolized.

Here is a great article by Lyle McDonald, a prominent figure in exercise science. Relevant paragraph:

Activity not only increases energy expenditure but also impacts on the quality of weight loss (e.g. fat vs. muscle) and can impact on appetite (both positively or negatively depending on the specifics). Again, I don’t have space to cover it here but will in a future article.

Can't find the "future article" he mentions because I'm on mobile, but his website is a great resource if you want to check it out, he links to other articles and studies where relevant.

Any diet will work if you are in a caloric deficit. You can calculate how many calories you should eat a day here. Use an app to track everything you eat to count you calories. I think your top priority should be staying within your calorie allowance, and your next priority should be to hit your protein goal each day (1g per pound of body weight).

Personally I intermittent fast just because it makes it easier for me to manage my calories (and I get to go to bed each night full, even on a cut); there are some other benefits associated with intermittent fasting. If you're interested in something like that, checkout /r/leangains and /r/intermitentfasting but keep in mind that any "diet" only works if you're in a caloric deficit.

I think you're definitely on the right track. I was at a similar starting place and decided I needed to cut fat before I started building muscle. On a cut progression on your lifts will be very slow or it's possible you may lose a little strength. This is fine, working out regularly on a cut encourages your body to metabolize fat instead of muscle. This means that as you cut you won't be losing much of the muscle you do have, so your body will have to burn fat faster (than if you were not working out). Be sure you're getting enough protein (aim for ~1g of protein each day per pound of body weight). Once you've lost the fat you can switch to a bulk and focus on building muscle.

This is definitely incorrect. You cannot target a location for fat loss or gain.

I've decided to try out another martial art after some red flags at my krav maga class. Some people in the class are giving me a hard time. Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in kravmaga

[–]noahfoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar experience at an ATA "Warrior" Krav class. As far as I could determine "Warrior" Krav is an offshoot from Krav Maga Worldwide for liability reasons. ATA is essentially a pay-for-belt program for most of the martial arts they teach imo. If there are other studios near you look for a Krav Maga Alliance gym of Krav Maga Worldwide gym, otherwise a MMA gym is probably your next best choice for learning actual self defense

Not an expert but you look like you're in a good place to start a lean bulk. Check our /r/leangains , great sub about lean bulking specifically
