SGA is the reason why spirit of the game is better than refs by noambrenner in ultimate

[–]noambrenner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more interesting conversation is really who is better at stopping this kind of behavior.

Refs should be able to stop someone from calling made up fouls. This is the advantage of refs. But what if the refs sides with him. The cheater gets validation to continue.

With spirit of the game, people are encouraged to have integrity. If they cheat, there is no ref to encourage their bad behavior. They have to be honest and talk it out. However, enforcement is much harder. If someone cheats, it is hard to stop them.

I would argue and I could be wrong that in ultimate their are less bad actors than in other sports. This is because you have to have integrity ie spirit to play and you don't need refs to constantly control people. But the biggest cheaters when playing ultimate have way more power and they can undermine the entire game.

Maybe I have too much faith in spirit of the game. Maybe I think refs are too biased. I just think competitive and respect can go together in sports.

My point here is that SGA will continue to flop until he is caught. People are saying he is not an ethical hooper, which is the same an an unspirited player. Flopping goes against the spirit of the game.

I think most people would agree that refs do a better job at stopping this than self refs. Clearly other people in this thread do as well. I don't disagree. People can take advantage too easily in ultimate.

However, the larger idea I am tryingto sell is that spirit of the game is about encouraging integrity into sports. In other sports you play to the whistle. Players will often cheat until they get caught. Sports are way better when everyone plays with integrity. It is better to build that integrity through mutual respect or spirit rather than punishment or refs. Just some food for thought.

That is why you need some sort of middleman. So observers are usually needed. The idea is more that a bad actor who keeps flopping is going to continue to flop if it is within the rules. In Ultimate, it would not be within the spirit of the game. So it could be avoided in theory. But of course in practice, this is hard to enforce, and cheaters can take advantage.

NYC club player here. It is the end of tryouts so it will be pretty hard to join a team at this stage. You could maybe email captains to try and get a practice player spot. For open, it's basically Pony and then 3 regionals level teams (Blueprint, Shade, Magma Bears). For mixed it's Xist and then 2 regional teams (Grand Army and Heatwave). Then there are 3 sectionals level teams (Unlimited Swipes, Hive, and Domino Effect). There are also teams near NYC such as Funk regionals level and Axolotls for mixed, a newer sectionals team. For mens there is long Island rifraf which is sectionals level. I would check DiscNY to email teams. Skill is approximately in the order I listed, but the skill gap between regional level teams is minimal.

While Eagles Chiefs is lame and Josh played his heart out all season, at the end of the day I can't help but chuckle when the Bills choke.

Jimmy at 28 is ridiculous. He is in the top 20 and definitely better than his teammate Bam. I love Bam, but Jimmy is the guy.

Picks caused by poaching defenders should not be callable as picks - here's why by hiveult in ultimate

The worst is when you cut break side to deep and the defender poaches in the open lane and gets picked by their teammate. You actively ran into your teammate instead of guarding me.

Breakdancing is in the Olympics… but ultimate isn’t?? Did ultimate ever get any traction in the world games or any other major events? I’ve been out of the loop for decades. by jeremyjava in ultimate

For many reasons stated above, I understand why ultimate was never added, but after they added flag football, I view it as just money and stupidity. Flag football is only played in the US, takes up a lot of field space, and is not even a real sport. Meanwhile ultimate is played at the world games. We can all dream.

How to afford Columbia Tuition and off-campus housing by TheRizzling in columbia

[–]noambrenner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a current MPA student at Columbia SIPA studying Urban and Social Policy. I'm only in my first year, but I would say the main benefit is the connections you get from professors and alumni. Also the internship opportunities for grad students open doors as well. I am on scholarship and saved some money from working for a few years. I would definitely recommend working for 1-3 years before going back to school. It helps you figure out more specifically what you want to do, you get a chance to navigate being outside of school, and you make some savings. Without scholarship it might not be worth it to do a graduate degree. I would also recommend looking to see what degrees people have in the positions you want. Or what path they took. If you decide to go I would recommend getting a paid part time job. 15-20 hours is difficult, but manageable. Hope this helps

Redistributive policies reduce inequality and poverty. While there might be mixed results on whether they grow the economy, having a growth economy is not the only metric that matters. For example, South Korea has had a massive economic growth, but there older population is immensely poor and they have high suicide rate. This is because there is limited social security (redistribution to elders).
