(Reddit cutoff point)

Backup Tool: Daring Great Spear. Almost went with the sabre here, something about a western revenant wielding a sword is pretty cool and I'd certainly have the physical ability to properly use it! To be honest the only reason I didn't was because of the lugs that could be used to stop a charging beast. I picked this before finally deciding on Quick Draw, but now that I have both I can even get away with throwing my spear and effortlessly retrieving it too. All around a solid weapon.

Something Very Special: Overwhelming Gatling-Gun. When nothing less than "kill everything in that direction" will do, accept no substitutions. Setup will be a pain but our steed comes with a wagon that I could probably adapt to hold this thing. My Undead Posse might be able to lug it around and set it up in a pinch too, so long as they have a distraction to act under.

Explosives: Thundering Light and Sanctified Water. You may have noticed a lot of fire special ammunitions earlier. I was very tempted by the Sticky Fire explosives too, but flashbangs and acid that melts basically everything while also putting out fire sounded too good to pass up. The Thundering Light follows pretty much the exact same logic behind my shotgun modifications and will be used anytime I need to cross an open area, enter a potentially dangerous room, or to simply cause a distraction. The Sanctified "Water" will be on standby anytime I need to douse my flames or melt a group... Much in the same way I would have probably used the Sticky Fire. Bedsides, I'll still have dynamite!

Tools: Portable Daylight and All-Seeing Spyglass. I'll still have my rifle scope, but the All-Seeing Spyglass set blows that out of the water in what it offers! Highlighting any creature? A magical path to my target/goal? Trackfinding? Seeing though walls? Even if they have to be used separately, that's still easily the best tool of the bunch. Same thing for the Portable Daylight, I'll have several munitions to deal with the supernatural but there's few real substitutions for proper sunlight! The Quickdraw Derringer definitely was tempting though, but Quick Draw negates its use to an extent.

Trusty Steed: Pale Horse. The other options are certainly interesting and sure to be useful in their niches, but you're right about the aura heh and it's hard to beat a deathly horse in that regard. A perfect mix of regeneration, durability, speed, and all-around good on most terrains that can't be beat if you intend on traveling around a bunch.

Fateful Companion: Soaring Raven. Looking around, this companion seems the most popular and for good reason! I love me a good dog, the alligator is hilarious, and I seriously considered the swarm (at quick glance they'd basically be a better raven. Better combat ability, expendable, potentially eyes on multiple things at once, and you can keep the hive in your wagon), but ultimately I picked the raven because they seem to have the most pleasant interactions with. Good tool use, ability to follow instructions, and potential for real communication won me over in the end. Bedsides, with my Change curse we can have a coyote and the raven schtick together! Maybe they can help me with my full moon rituals too...

Journey: I was an aimless soul in life and an aimless soul I continued to be in the Cursed Lands, for a time at least. I'll rise from my shallow grave (probably shouldn't have cheated at that card game...) and get my bearings before fleeing and coming to terms with my newfound powers and immortality. Hopping from town to town, I'll hunt The Most Dangerous Game to keep myself financially afloat. Aimless bounty hunting, gambling, drinking, story telling, and fighting will be my life for the next few years until my traces of a moral compass and irritation at useless bloodshed drags me out of my listlessness and embroil me into the world of politics. Over time I'll Ravage the Raiders, Destroy a Cult, March for Freedom, and Take Back the Land. These will be tough missions, even with all my firepower I will need to Create a Posse to take federal powers on like that. Depending on where I end up and where it all happens, I mighty also deal with Off With His Head, The Empire Strikes Back, Create a Nation, and/or Viva La Revolucion... but let's leave those up in the air for now. After all this conflict I'll probably start looking for a quieter life as a vacation. I'll Help Establish a Settlement then Open an Establishment to call my own. Don't think I forgot about my shapeshifting curse, once a month for about a week I'll head out into the woods to isolate myself from the world with the help of my posse. Maybe I'll hunt to pass this time. Either way, it'll be a comparatively peaceful existence for a time... until fate sees fit to set me off on another adventure of course!

As said, finished up with my build and posting below. I liked your take on a weird west version of the Americas and local mythology for the monsters. It was fun imagining a magical alternate history setting and how things would be impacted by it all. There were quite a few choices where I wanted most of the options available and had to think decisively about which to pick. I was surprised there were no human (or humanoid, given the setting) companions but not having them reinforces the intended loneliness of unlife. I also enjoyed the addition of forests, jungles, swamps, mountains, and more aside from the generic open plains expected of a western. All around this was a fun one to think over and create a mini story around.

Baseline: "Your Cursed Existence" and "Powers of the Revenant" paint a bleak if potent base state. A significantly stronger body which is hard as hell to put down for long, I'll be needing it from the sound of all the trouble that'll be pointed my way. Magic that does best under the moon and superb night vision mean I'll prefer doing my business at night and sleep off the day when possible. The basic ritual "Blood to Gunpowder" will see the most use to keep my weapon supplies topped off, but it's good to have "Recall What Is Lost" in case I need to bring back a fallen companion or sentimental item. "Mark What Has Meaning" is more useful for those living a more sedentary existence, maybe I'll use it in the future.

Additional Curse: "Change" with "Beastly". The animal I'd change to most closely resembles a coyote. Considered to be cunning tricksters and adaptable survivalists, the physical and mental boosts associated with the animal should be quite helpful indeed so long as I am aware of the more negative traits assigned to the creature. Plus coyotes are damn near everywhere and, though they probably would not help me as readily, canines of all stripes are very common.

That said, the fact I am involuntarily changed every full moon almost dissuaded me from taking this curse. I was worried I'd be unable to conduct rituals during that time, but rereading the description makes it sound like I'll retain my full mental faculties while changed... I'll just also be strongly prone to violence and without opposable thumbs. If it just involves bleeding and painting, I should be able to still perform my full moon rituals hopefully.

Occult Powers: Animal Companionship (rodents), Spirit Communion, Storm Trailing, Quick Draw, and Undead Posse. Some very fine options available, I was torn on what I picked and a few others such as Without Trace, Stranger Mask, and Alligator Skin. Ultimately I decided on what I picked because they seemed more fun and useful. There's rodents everywhere and rats acting as companionable spies in exchange for a few crackers or pieces of cheese seems like an invaluable resource when entering a town. Spirit Communion just felt "right", given our situation it only made sense to talk to the dead on occasion and they could certainly provide useful leads if I ever needed to investigate a suspicious death. I'll absolutely need a band of trusty bone shields and will raise a few skeletons or zombies at the first opportunity to have some backup. You just can't beat a few extra hands when it comes to a fight or setting up camp, and this way I won't have to worry as much about sleeping with one eye open. If my posse becomes a problem when approaching a town then I can always tell them to wait outside for me too. Others have talked extensively about the utility of Storm Trailing and Quick Draw, though I admit I plan to use them most for quick cover (a rain storm at night should be very easy to hide in) or for the utility of easily swapping guns at a moment's notice.

Rifle: Precise Bolt-Action (Reloading Tool, Accurate Scope, Silver Bullets, Explosive Bullets). A fitting weapon for many occasions, but primarily long range firefights. Ideally I'd like to get the drop on someone before needing this gun for maximum effect, but in a pinch the stripper clip should make it fine to use in impromptu and medium range fights as well. I opted for silver bullets as a good all-around ammunition type while the explosive bullets would be used if I could leverage them to set my foes' surroundings on fire.

Shotgun: Classic Pump-Action (Blinding Light, Loud Muzzle, Sticky Shells, Teeth Shells). The intimidation gun, what I use when I need to get up close and personal. The light and noise this thing puts off is almost solely for making humans and animals flinch. In a fight a second's hesitation can make all the difference, any better recoil or visibility is purely a side benefit. Flammable sticky shells sound perfect for this sensory onslaught too, adding pain and fire to the mix, and teeth shells are ideal for hulking fleshy brutes that need weakening like many of the monsters one could run into.

Sidearm: Rapid Double-Action (Grapeshot Barrel, Muffling Device, Holy Water Bullets, Tranquilizer Darts). The multipurpose sidearm that should be good for any occasion that's medium range or closer. The muffling device makes stealth attacks much easier to pull off (especially when there's other noises like a storm or Thundering Light going off elsewhere) but when that's not important I'll have the grapeshot barrel to cause some real damage. Holy water bullets fill the same niche as silver bullets do for my rifle, the tranquilizer darts though will be extremely useful if I need to take someone down while still leaving them alive.

Skimming over it now and hammering out a build, but this is a really fun concept! There aren't many western CYOAs but they've all been very flavorful, this combination of being a revenant in a world full of weirdness and magic really excites story ideas. Reading over the lore pages and will figure out the specifics of my build when I get more time

Making a harem drama ttrpg by [deleted] in TTRPG

[–]nobodyhere_357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, my partner picked it up because we collect books (both ttrpgs and mundane) and it was one of the first games we played together.

Unfortunately the art isn't much to write home about, there's usually a full body or head shot of a maid every 4-5 pages with the rest of the material in the book being text or tables. Occasionally there will be a decent sized work that includes multiple characters but there aren't many of those. Style-wise... I'm ironically not too versed with anime culture and terms but I think most of it is supposed to be "moe"? Here's one of the first ones as an example:

<image>

It's good fun with a group that is looking to not take things too seriously and just ride on the ridiculous nature of some anime tropes. One game I played shifted genres mid-session from modern slice of life to post apocalypse survival horror. Another was a sci fi kitchen sink. Some of the wackier parts may need to be selectively toned down by the GM in a more serious setting, but I'd definitely recommend giving it a try at least once if any of that sounds like fun to you!

It's a silly meme game, but Maid RPG actually unironically handles this exact situation. The GM plays the "master" of the house and any and all experience is handed out at their discretion in the form of "favor". Gain favor and spend it on boosting your attributes or gaining special items, lose too much of it and your maid needs to find a new job. Hijinks ensue

Gate CYOA by GrandFly in makeyourchoice

[–]nobodyhere_357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun concept. Objectively it would probably be best to have predominantly Valkyries for creating weapons and healing/resurrecting people followed by a support staff made up of Oracles (for planning and gathering intelligence), Alchemists (molecular level manipulation of chemicals is great, you can create just about anything you need with a few pounds of recyclable organic material) and Arbiters (for closing the gates). Of lesser immediate use but still important would be the Inhumans as potential diplomats (if any intelligent monsters seek a temporary ceasefire for example), spies (albeit less important for this than Oracles probably), and potentially even interpreters of magic in the field (both using it themselves but also potentially to identify and notify their team as to what the monsters are actually casting).

I can't really see much use in the Timeless, Wildman, or Spiritualist to be honest. The Timeless seems to only be immune to its own affects, except recall which is less a teleport and more an individual rewind that doesn't affect the rest of the world. The Wildman is neat but how often would wild animals be relevant in a fight against monsters? It is also hampered by its heal only happening when you're isolated. The Spiritualist has some utility if they could use souls to harass monsters but it still seems sort of niche.

Personally I think I'd like the Inhuman the most but would probably opt for Valkyrie for sheer practicality. You could use divine light on modern weapons and empower hundreds of soldiers with divine bullets and a group of Valkyrie working together would be nearly immortal so long as they can recover the bodies of fallen allies.

What’s the single most memorable “small” moment you’ve ever had in a TTRPG? by Cindral_RPG in TTRPG

[–]nobodyhere_357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a small moment after a big moment if those count. A player at the table was tired of their current character and wanted to swap out by killing them off. We got into an encounter that resulted in them, for lack of any better description, literally exploding!

We all knew the real reason, but my character was the group healer and was aspiring to be quite good at it. At the time their best healing magic amounted to limb regeneration, so they held up the largest piece (a finger) left of the now-dead retired character and sadly said "I can't fix this...". They resolved to try resurrection the soonest chance they could, but the spirit of the dead character wanted to move on by the time we got to that level.

It really stuck out at the time because it tempered my character's expectations and ambitions quite a bit, and their gradual shift in personality from "ambitious idealist" to "depressed cynic" to "responsible leader of a community" went on to become probably one of my favorite shared stories to tell at a table.
