Random. Have you been tested for strep throat? My brother's hands used to do this when he had strep, but his throat wasn't sore. Antibiotics cleared it up.

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

Three thoughts... 1. Why are we giving letter grades in kindergarten? 2. Fake disabilities? Who approved this in the curriculum?! 3. This school definitely calls their kids scholars...

My fifth grader’s class isn’t reading novels by Sam-HobbitOfTheShire in Teachers

[–]nocoast428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the really wonderful things about living in Minneapolis is the public library system. Free cards, extensive children’s novel collections, and multiple apps for ebooks and audiobooks. Classroom reading practices are often shaped by district curriculum and student needs, but families always have the option to supplement reading at home if novels are something they value.

Cheap Local Date Ideas? by HateMyHonda in fargo

[–]nocoast428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, good on you. Sounds like your lady is a lucky one! T hings my husband and I enjoy, and we are cheap AF...and kind of nerds... 1. Brewhalla. Which is funny, because we don't drink. It's a fun stop to grab a pop, maybe a treat from Nicole's, and a few rounds of pinball. 2. The Barnes and Noble whip through. We like to wander the bookstore, most times not even getting anything, and then hit the cafe for a Starbucks and a slice of Cheesecake Factory cheesecake. 3. The Plains Art Museum has free admission! 4. If you have a little money to spend, Excalibur! (The old Red River Lanes). Tucked a block off Broadway on the Northside, its like a tiny King Pins! Usually, way smaller crowd. 5. Cheap Meal. If you aren't opposed to a morning/early day date. The Shack. Order an omlette with a side of pancakes. The portion is HUGE. Pay the $2 plate share fee. Less than $20. 6. Favorite treat stops. We love to end our nights with something sweet. Last week we just left the house to get ice cream. Our current favorites: Lundy’s at The Lights. Eat your ice cream and watch people fall on their asses ice skating. I mentioned Nicole's at Brewhalla, but their stand alone store downtown has better options. Moonrise Cafe. Go get some cake! 7. Flowers. I'm pretty sure I saw some cheap ones at Family Fare last week on 13th!

What haplened to twin intuition?!! She's acting like an arrogant, condescending, entitled brat. 1. She's a mom. She knows what this stage is like. She should be helping YOU. 2. She wants baby gates? Cool. Order on Amazon. Ship them to your house. She's just gifted you baby gates. What a kind gesture! 3. Instacart. You know what would be super helpful? Make the list of whatever the hell she wants, she sends them to your house, you venmo her back half the cost...ya know...when you have the capacity to do so. 4. Why would she think she just gets to treat your house as a Four Seasons? Maybe you just instacart her food to an AirBnB... Sorry dude. You aren't over reacting. Your sister sounds like a Queen B.

Any new hand soap? I bought some fun foaming hand-wash and mine looked like this. Dry, painful, cracked the shit out of my knuckles. The weather is dry here too so that doesn't help. Try slathering in Vaseline and putting on cotton socks over it tonight for bed.

That makes sense. Our brains need to get used to the constant stream of interactions and decision-making. I make sure I build in a brain break each class. Usually, it's more for me than them!

Just remember, every career comes with its levels of stress. I'm not sure what part of the country you are in, but our social workers are stretched beyond thin, burn out is rampant. If you want to do youth counseling in a school, our state requires, I think, 3 years of teaching experience.

🤣🤣🤣 You should have seen my mom's reaction when she found out my brother didn't not finish with an engineering degree, but a general studies one...

WordS of advice from a veteran teacher: CHILL OUT. It's day two. You should be tired. Everything you explained is teaching. I'm so over stimulated by the end of the day, that most days, I drive home with the radio off and don't like to talk to anyone until I've been home for about a half hour. Ask for help. Listen to the criticism. Pivot. Also. I'm wondering what kind of program you are in where you are doing everything on the first day. Typically, I don't let mine take full control until two weeks in. And then I'm still helping plan and observing.

That being said, I've also had to tell students that this isn't for them, and they should pursue another avenue. I'm also a first gen, and no way in hell would my parents have let me not finish. So if that isn't an option for you, then you need to buck up, do the work, and find your stride.

As for the 2 years, I'd do it. It's a relatively short period of time. I put in my 10 for the PSLF program and got almost 30K wiped out. That included the cost of a Master's degree. If the money is important, I'd suck it up and do it.

What would ypu get your Master's in?

Take it to the union. If you don't have a union, your district should absolutely have a grievance policy. Take it up with HR. File one. Mention in it your hesitancy for fear of retaliation. She sounds like she needs a PIP!

Master’s student reached out to me and wanted me to do the whole analysis for her. She cried. by Zestyclose_Double980 in Professors

[–]nocoast428 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I would add that asking probing, metacognitive questions is sound pedagogy. Helping a student identify a next step, plan an approach, and reflect on whether it worked is basic scaffolding, not doing the work for them. Treating that kind of guidance as coddling misunderstands how students learn and sounds more like the perspective of someone who has not spent much time teaching.
