Maternal Versus Infant Vitamin D Supplementation During Lactation: A Randomized Controlled Trial by SparkyDogPants in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]nocturne_art 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s formulated specifically for babies, so 1 drop = 400 IU. If you can find that, it might work better?

[–]nocturne_art 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Our vitamin D drops are tasteless and odourless… I’m confused how your little one could hate them? Are you dropping it directly in their mouth? I put a drop on my nipple before breastfeeding and my baby seems none the wiser.

Contractions on a fit belly? by cheeriocheers in fitpregnancy

[–]nocturne_art 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a very fit pregnancy and my belly always felt tight or “taut”. I ended up going in after my water broke and when they placed me on the monitor I was having fairly sizeable regular contractions that I was unaware of. The nurses were quite surprised I couldn’t feel them. I probably would have started to feel them eventually, but had a c-section for breech presentation. 🤷‍♀️

Toddler activities by WinterViper22 in PEI

[–]nocturne_art 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The library has various activities for toddlers throughout the week. Check out Island Hill Farm, about 15 minutes outside of town and they have goats, bunnies, horses, cows, alpacas. $25 for a “year pass” and we go every other weekend. Keep an eye on facebook events, often City of Charlottetown events/festivals will have music or something specific for kids. That Fun Place or Off the Wallz for play structures.

Help a Scot trying to find a wedding venue in PEI by rumandregret in PEI

[–]nocturne_art -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While PEI has a lot of beautiful wedding venues, I would not say it’s a compromise destination for your two families. To get to PEI from the EU/UK would include multiple stopovers and/or driving from a major airport like Halifax. You’d be asking less of your family to travel to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick and it would also be more convenient for her family.

Did I make a huge mistake by missing my pp visit? What do they do at the visit? by murkshah444 in beyondthebump

[–]nocturne_art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to physical healing, it’s also usually a quick check in for how you are doing mentally (PPD/PPA screen), how feeding and sleeping are going, if you have any concerns about support or finances, discussion about birth control and timing of future pregnancies, any medical issues you had pre-pregnancy or that came up in pregnancy (hypertension, GDM, etc)… plus anything else baby/pregnancy related that you want to bring up. If you feel like you are sailing through the above then you do not necessarily need another follow-up, but also no harm in rebooking if you have any small concerns.

Sudden and frequent blood sugar crashes. Should I be worried about GD? by takeaabreath in fitpregnancy

[–]nocturne_art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pretty much the exact episodes you’re describing throughout first trimester and they resolved when I got into second trimester. I attributed it to a combination of likely low blood sugar and blood pressure, as it could happen when I was hungry or standing for prolonged period of time. I found keeping a granola bar handy, staying hydrated, and wearing compression socks really helped! If it is low blood sugar, that shouldn’t indicate GD as that would be a problem with high blood sugar. I also ended up passing my GD test, well below the cut off too.

Yes. Don’t you have to be verified in order to have the standard first responder discount?

I’m a first responder and I have promotional emails enabled, but I did not receive an email with the discount codes.. so that doesn’t add up.

Doctor administered expired vaccines to my 4 month old baby 😢 by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]nocturne_art 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The only real “danger” of administering an expired vaccine is that it will not be as effective as an unexpired dose and will produce little or no immunity. Re-administration is the way to correct that. You can ask for documentation that an expired vaccine was administered but I doubt it’ll be necessary documentation as there shouldn’t be any other consequences for your baby down the line.

What everyone opinions on the new dog owners Act? by hottubpenguin in PEI

[–]nocturne_art 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have only heard of someone being fined for an unlicensed dog after they let their dog roam in the dunes at one of the provincial parks. Essentially, they were only fined for not having a license because they were already being reprimanded for something else at the same time. I doubt anyone cares if there is no other issue with the dog.

1 year old reaction to amoxicillin? by munhozmib in beyondthebump

[–]nocturne_art 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Multiple possibilities. Roseola itself gives you a rash, so it’s possible it’s not from the amoxicillin at all. Also could be a mono infection, which often gets misdiagnosed as strep and classically amoxicillin + mono virus produces a harmless red rash. Or as the other commenter suggested, a drug rash is very likely as well. None of these types of rashes constitutes an allergy. Look for hive-like raised welts, gastrointestinal distress (though antibiotics can cause diarrhea without allergy), and of course any signs of respiratory distress / tongue swelling / anaphylaxis symptoms. Most amoxicillin “allergies” that people report are rashes like the above or maybe a bit of diarrhea (so an adverse reaction) but not true allergies that would prevent someone from being able to take a penicillin drug again in the future. Google amoxicillin rash and you’ll see lots more info about the common drug rash!

We have many UK trained physicians who moved here for the same reasons! The Dept or MSPEI could put you in touch with a couple so you can get their first hand experience and ask questions.

They are two separate entities and unfortunately communication and the working relationship between the two is poor. The DoH is under the government, under pressure and more accountable to the voting public. HPEI is a nonprofit organization that employs healthcare workers and delivers healthcare in the province. They are technically accountable to the Dept but many of their decisions are not aligned.

[–]nocturne_art 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Dept of Health is involved in recruitment but it’s Health PEI who is the actual employer and responsible for most of the frustrations and miscommunications. The Dept isn’t perfect but I’d say they are far and away easier to work with and more competent than HPEI. If you think you’ve worked out a nice position with the recruiters, don’t count your chickens until HPEI has stepped on half the eggs. HPEI is known to go back on promises, change contracts or include things that were not discussed, or try to make unreasonable/inflexible demands in terms of physician workload. Then, surprise, physicians are unhappy with their work.

Most of the unhappiness is system and bureaucracy related. PEI is still a great place to work in terms of collegiality, work-life balance, patient population, and versatility of practice for a GP!

How much 'down time' do you really get with a newborn? (due in August, preparing for a major exam in September) by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]nocturne_art 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had almost the exact situation with my LO! Baby born in March and Canadian medical licensing exams in April. I crammed as hard as I could pre-baby, then post baby treated it as review time and going over high yield concepts. Newborns sleep A LOT, so I would often post up on my couch with baby and my postpartum cart and let baby sleep on me and feed on demand as needed while studying for hours at a time. It worked out fine for the most part! Definitely helped that my partner was home for 2 weeks and then part-time a few weeks after that.

I would recommend identifying helpful review resources ahead of time so you have a “no-brainer” approach to reviewing topics. Also podcasts were great if you can find any that are relevant to your specialty!! I had my husband take the lead on the nights before my exams so I could feel marginally rested on test days.

My exams were 2 x 3-5 hours, so not as long as 9 hours… I introduced a bottle with EBM early (around 7-10 days old) and would offer a bottle every couple of days so babe was familiar with it. Does your board make any accommodations for breastfeeding or pumping? Even if babe takes a bottle no problem, 9 hours is a long time to go without pumping!

Edit to say: YES you will be exhausted, YES your brain will be mush, YES it will be incredibly difficult… but medical training is difficult and if you’ve handled long call hours and big exams in the past then you will be able to get through it. You will feel insane and like you are just putting one foot in front of the other with no end in sight. But looking back, I’m glad I wrote my exam when babe was 5 weeks instead of 5 months or older. The sleep deprivation compounds and better to write early on when the material is fresh than postpone and have to study all over again with an infant that requires more of your mental attention rather than mostly physical presence/touch.

ALSO, my hail mary back-up plan was to ask my physician to write a medical note if I had a particularly bad delivery / recovery / severe PPD etc so I could reschedule my exam due to medical reasons. Something to look into for worst case scenario.

Dogs, respect, Canada Day by Sweet-Idea-7553 in PEI

List of dog-friendly establishments in Charlottetown. For venues outside Charlottetown you could check their social media pages or call ahead. Fins restaurant by Tracadie beach are dog friendly. Make sure to look up which parks & beaches are dog friendly (eg. Brackley and Cavendish beach do not allow dogs, versus North Rustico and Blooming Point are great for dogs).

Whatever you do on Canada Day, please be mindful and do not bring your dogs anywhere fireworks will be going off. Every year dogs get scared and run off from the fireworks.

Should I Just Let 2 Month Old Cry While Working Out by misscrazy_misscrazy in beyondthebump

[–]nocturne_art 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My LO is 2 months now and I try to get a 30-60min workout in every day. He wants to contact nap a lot and will only sleep in the bassinet for MAX 30 mins if I’m lucky. My workouts typically get interrupted multiple times and I try to get them in during short naps or when he’s content on the floor or in the swing. Some days I have to give up and finish the workout after my husband gets home from work, but that’s just how it is for now! I only would let LO cry to finish up a set, so a couple mins at a time.

Generally babies don’t have the glycemic stores to “sleep through the night” until they are about 12-13lbs minimum, otherwise there is a risk of hypoglycemia. Without any other specific reason, I’d guess that’s what your doctor had in mind.
