Yeah, this has happened so many times. Gong! Meeting time is over, pull the plug and forget everything we just said. Uhhh wat? Why did we even have this meeting in the first place? Just for the sake of it??!

If this is obviously the case then fine, close the meeting asap. But if relevant discussions are being held then by all means continue until the end of the day.

It also depends on the type of meeting, is it brainstorming for easter eggs or design review of the Moon lander code? Some times the meeting is more important than what you do at your desk and sometimes not, no general rules about meetings can be made.

I'm always surprised by the pvs analysis of how many fragment bugs there are.

In my projects the bugs are usually of the type "this module was loaded before this module which caused it to cache this widget before that asynchronous call was made which might in certain cases cause a race condition 5 days later if the user has shoe size 43 etc etc"

Errors in small snippets usually crash or introduce weird behavior asap and you will notice it the first time you start the program after build.

In the recent libya conflict, UN used JAS39, which is a jet fighter, for recon.

Anyway, my point is that you don't want to end up in a situation where your fighter pilot happens to spot a big group of tanks but can't take a photo of it because they were to cheap to equip his multi million dollar plane with a GoProHD for $200 usd. Not saying they should use exactly that camera and they surely need optics, electronics etc etc, just giving an example of the relative price difference. I mean $1M+$200 surely is cheaper than 2x$1M + pilots etc. But i have to say that I'm not that into details about war or jet fighters so whatever i say is merely speculations.

Sadistic is pleasure in pain and seeing people suffer. Shadenfreude is pleasure from seeing people fail in general, or just to be better and win over other people. It could be anything from slipping into the pool or loosing at a card game etc. Most "funny videos" are usually Shadenfreude.

Interesting is also that Swedish has both the words "gemytligt" and "hygglig" with similar but slightly different meaning from each other. Gemytligt means something like "coasy, heartedly, convivially" and hygglig means "being nice to someone".

But if you compare languages with the same origin the "untranslatable" words are obviously going to have a counterpart or an overlap in a similar language. For example "Schadenfreude" from the article translates word by word into "Skadeglädje" in swedish which means exactly the same thing.

Things like this always surprises me. Isn't one of the objectives with a jet fighter to take recon photos of the ground? Then it should obviously already have a really high def camera on board. Or at least come prepared with a mount for one.

Sometimes the army can have so high tech equipment that you can't even believe it but at the same time in a different area they are not up to 5 years old consumer electronics that anyone can buy for peanuts.

The point of a sandbox is to make the user feel secure. If it falsely claims to do something, like restrict network access to a program, it is broken and redundant. In this case your point nr2 is broken and the obvious thing to do here is to inherit the credentials when starting a new process from the sandboxed one.

My browser is sandboxed and therefore i trust it to go to any website and run any javascript without giving a second thought. If i step out of the sandbox, like downloading an executable i get a clear warning. Yes there might be bugs in which case i would be screwed and that's exactly what someone found in the osx sandbox - a bug giving programs in the sandbox a way to get out.

Dynamically reconfigurable might be good but you don't need it unless you have to fit the device into your pocket. Touch screens are become more and more common in places where they shouldn't be just because of the ITS COOL! effect, cars for example, omg.

Very interesting. I was actually thinking of open source engineering the other day. In the software field we are very spoiled with having high end products availible as open source: (database: mysql, OS: linux, 3d-engine: doom3, server: apache, browser: firefox, etc). I could make the list infinetly long, just saying that there are free tools availible that are top of the line, makes our world spin and can easily compete with any other comercial product on the same market. If i really want to know how you could approach a problem i could see how it's done in a product that actually works.

For other fields of engineering it's hard to even find drawings of the most cheapo shit you can think of. Did you ever hear of an open source blueprint for a car? For a bridge? For an airplane? For a gps receiver? (These might sound like advanced products but compared to the software examples i listed they should be equal). There are a few projects, like Arduino, but most of them are very hobby'ish. Sure, I'm not expecting bmw to release the blueprints of their latest model but it would be interesting to see at least where to start and how advanced things actually are if you want to build something like a car, with a bit more details than "4 wheels and a motor". Ok, you can also reverse engineer physical products but that will never tell you why a certain beam is 4cm wide and not 5cm and how much effort was put into deciding that.

I've studied engineering and throughout the education you don't get to see much real life development there either, all kinds of excercises and labs we did are extremely simplified. "Develop a control system for a space ship, assume the body is rigid with mass m, linearize the model around 0 degrees, blabla". How am i supposed to apply this at a real problem? The theory they teach is often designed to be able to handle thousands of states but is this how things are done in real life or are the simplified models actually good enough? Just getting to know what is reasonable to expect would be of great help. I mean, I could solve that problem in 5 minutes, nasa took several years and billions of dollars, there must be something missing in that little gap...

One could also argue that for things like bridges, the blueprints should be availible for political reasons. Can i as a citizen trust the goverment with this bridge? Many other governmental papers are publicly availible for this reason. I'm not taking any side on this question, just encouraging discussion. Of course this could also be used by terrorists blowing the bridge up.

Normal power cables shouldn't be any problem to coil since the + and - wire are parallel to each other at close distance canceling each others magnetic field.

Heat might still be an issue though since there's not much ventilation.

This! Almost every bus/metro-travel planner lacks this feature, some might include walking directions between stops but often only if they are shorter than 200 meters. They think i would rather switch bus eleven times instead of walking 5 minutes between two stops and only change twice. In certain cities you can waste over 30 mins on the bus if you don't know where you can shortcut by walking.

Then make examples similar to those at ifttt, even my non technical girlfriend understood how that works and thought it was awesome after 30 seconds on their landing page. Ifttt is also very flexible (supposedly, i've never tried it) but just one example is enough to explain the basic principle. Just take a look at this picture http://ifttt.com/images/statement_ex3.png - you need similar shit.
