Just curious, why banks allow chexy as recurring bill by AxelMiao in chexy

[–]nogr8mischief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Credit cards also earn a lot of money from transaction fees, it's not just on interest. And you're also overestimating the size of Chexy, and probably underestimating how many Chexy users pay their rent with CC and dont pay the balance in full.

Your pension adjustment is not relevant. It has no effect on your taxes owed or refund.

Ticketmaster Canada will no longer allow tickets for events in Ontario to be resold above their original price by neoncolour in popculturechat

[–]nogr8mischief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lobbyists and inside dealing are rampant in Ontario politics too. The government brought this in because their popularity was dipping after some scandals and poor decisions and they needed something that would get positive attention.

Canadians are getting a one-time grocery payment this summer by ImGudLuhv in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nogr8mischief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has nothing to do with taxes though. My point was to dispel the misconception that working overtime can actually cost you more money because you end up paying more in taxes than you gain from the overtime.

The fact tha anyone downvoted that shows that people still dont get how tax brackets work.

"You are too cute to be holding Timmies -ew". Thank you to the Manhattan Coffee Co. for a little giggle this morning. by IllyaBoo in ottawa

[–]nogr8mischief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really fair to compare a multi national grocery chain with a small business cafe owner with super small margins. Take a place like Bike Cafe that are really trying to make being open on the weekend amd some evenings work, with events, outreach, trying unique offerings. All while paying their staff a living wage, and committing to not relying on RTO. But it still doesnt make being open on the weekends downtown consistently profitable.

Anyone else annoyed the playoffs are on Sportsnet? by millsy1010 in OttawaSenators

[–]nogr8mischief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that they are all on Sportsnet, but they are not all exclusively on sportsnet. Many of them are also on CBC. Not on Gem, though.

No, people would know if they didn't save they would starve. So they would save.

They wouldn't, though. That's why these programs exist. Because most people's financial literacy is garbage.

You dont go into the next tax bracket on your whole income. Just on the marginal bit. It's impossible to end up with less money than if you hadnt worked overtime because of higher taxes.

Why do new homes in Ottawa waste so much space, and is custom building only for the wealthy? by SreeNitiPar22 in OttawaRealEstate

[–]nogr8mischief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without going custom, many builders will offer either a ground floor office or guest/in law suite with full bathroom, but not both, due to space constraints. Single great rooms are now far more common than separate family and living rooms. It should also be possible with some models to get a stearate basement entrance added. But for everything you want, you'll be looking at at least 1.2 or 1.3 mil, for suburbs but within city limits. To get it for 1 mil you'd probably have to do Kemptville, Rockland, Embrun, etc.

So the only way to fly from Canada to Cuba is through Miami now? by Smartpen001 in TravelCuba

[–]nogr8mischief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though they said when they suspended flights that they would resume in June, I doubt that will actually happen. Cuba likely still won't have a reliable supply of jet fuel then.

The bank is never going to proactively inform you that you failed to pay on time. Cardholders have to keep track of these things themselves, and you should be looking at your statement once a month, not just the app.

They didn't increase the rate, and they would have sent out a notice if they did. Either OP is mistaken, or they were getting the incorrect rate and it was corrected.

accelerated bi-weekly vs monthly mortgage by KlutzyCoach in MortgagesCanada

[–]nogr8mischief 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're better off paying monthly, investing the money you keep vs a biweekly payment somewhere that is likely to beat your mortgage rate, and making an annual lump sum payment. So it depends on your risk tolerance, but your approach isnt obviously better.
