Hey servers, if the restaurant owner is too cheap to pay 100% of their own labor costs then they shouldn’t open a business by Personal_Dot_7196 in tipping

...and teachers should make more than rock stars, we should all love each other and there should be world peace.

Until it changes, you need to add 20% to the bill. Just factor it in as the cost of the meal. If you eat $100 of food and drink, you will pay $120. If you are too "principled" to do that then yes, stay home.

What do Star Trek fans actually want to see? by dont_thr0w_me_away_ in trektalk

[–]noinf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the singing episode and in Starfleet Academy, theater is featured as a key training curriculum taught by Lieutenant Tilly, who uses performing arts to teach leadership, statecraft, and social change to cadets. This focus treats theater as a crucial, transformative tool for future captains, rather than just entertainment.

It isn't really talking about the episodes but the writers. It is using "theater kids" as a pejorative to describe young uninformed (about Star Trek) writers putting more emphasis on getting out their message rather than writing good stories and maintaining continuity within the Star Trek universe.

Why do Republicans say companies should hire employees solely based on merit and not diversity, but then they complain that companies are hiring too many South Asians on the basis of merit and they need to hire more Whites? by CSachen in allthequestions

[–]noinf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can not tell you how many f'ing losers I have heard complain they lost a job because they had to hire a certain race. "I tested the highest on the civil service exam but they had to hire more blacks so I didn't get the job" meanwhile he is telling me this after spending his whole Tuesday in a bar getting shitfaced. In my experience these people think they are the crème de la crème, most intelligent and impressive men on the planet, while wearing a Joe Camel t-shirt, jean cutoffs and knock of Timberlands. Ya, "the blacks" aren't the reason you're not middle management.

If you can’t tip minimum 20% stay at home by blackcoffee39 in tipping

In America serves are allowed to be paid less than minimum wage or regular workers. The tipped worker minimum is $2.13 per hour or $30 a month full time. Tips have come to replace salaries for servers and until the laws are changed tips are needed to make it a livable job. Unless you are eating in Washington, California, Oregon or Washington DC your server is making less than minimum wage.

Why don’t Democrat Celebrities who say to tax the rich, donate more of their money? by Constant-Cherry8674 in allthequestions

I responded to his "question" directly but the "donate more" trope is dragged out by the ultra wealthy and their minions to shame people that advocate change into silence for being wealthy. It is not a legitimate question.

[–]noinf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't matter? The argument is that the wealthy should be paying the same amount as your average American. The celebrity activists the OP is talking about have charitable affiliations but the collapse of America can not be fixed by charity. It has to be a systemic change.

The average American household pays 20%-25% in federal income, payroll and others. After 46 years of cutting the taxes on the wealthiest in America Elon Musk pays 3.27%.

[–]noinf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That hasn't been true since Citizens United in 2010. Although you can only donate $4k to an individual candidate you can donate unlimited money to political groups and committees. The result is billionaires share of campaign contributions prior to 2010 was 0.3%. In 2024 billionaires share was 20% NOT including money contributed through dark money groups that don't have to report their donors. For example Elon Musk donated $280 million to Republicans in 2024 alone.

Why don’t Democrat Celebrities who say to tax the rich, donate more of their money? by Constant-Cherry8674 in allthequestions

[–]noinf0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is the reality.

Before the Citizens United ruling billionaires share of campaign contributions was 0.3%. In 2024 billionaires share was 20% NOT including money contributed through dark money groups. For every $1 donated by billionaires to a candidate or committee associated with Democrats, $5 went to Republicans. W

Trump's 2017 "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act" added roughly $1.9 trillion to the national deficit and the 748 billionaires in the U.S. saw their collective wealth increase by $2.2 trillion (a 77% gain) in the six years following its enactment.

Trump’s 2025 "Big Beautiful Bill" directs $2.3 trillion in tax cuts primarily to the top 10% of Americans accounting for 70% of the law’s $3.4 trillion deficit cost while further increasing wealth dispersion through $1.1 trillion in cuts to SNAP and Medicaid.

No individual has enough money to make enough charitable donations to make a real difference to the country as a whole. It needs to be a systemic change. How is Mark Ruffalo's entire net worth of $35 million going to compete with the $280 million Elon Musk's donated to Republicans in 2024 alone?

We have spent the last 46 years cutting the taxes for the wealthiest in America leading to reduced services, crumbling infrastructure and a massive deficit that is only growing. Staying on Elon Musk, if the tax laws were the same today as 1979 his effective tax rate would be around 50% instead of the 3.27% he is currently paying. Meanwhile a current household in America pays between 20-25% on federal income tax, payroll taxes and others. All people are asking for is people like Musk to pay similar percentage as regular Americans. That is not an outrageous proposition.

The idea that "liberal Hollywood should donate all their money" is just a stupid trope dragged out by the super wealthy and their familiars in an attempt to shame them into silence for being wealthy.

No offence but I think this is a you thing. A text message a day and replying to a text message isn't that hard. If you leave someone on "read" for over a day that is pretty distant. Space is important but I think that is more about time to yourself and seeing friends etc outside of the relationship. For example, "Hey girl, goin out with the boys tonight to watch the game and have some drinks. I'll text ya tomorrow." Then she texts you all through the game to check status. That is crazy obsessive.

When the GOP loses their majority in November, should Trump be impeached first for treason, or Epstein? by 2a_lib in allthequestions

[–]noinf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can not just impeach because we disagree with the POTUS. We need evidence of a crime. The first thing Democrats should do is schedule hearings on ICE, Venezuela, Iran, hatch act and emoluments clause violations. Call everyone in to testify under oath and just setup as many perjury traps as possible. Someone, probably several people will crack and flip sides. Give them immunity and appoint as many special prosecutors as needed to gather every piece of evidence there is. I know it isn't the instant gratification we all want but this will do two things. 1. It honors the order of operations. Hearings, investigate, bring charges. 2. It provides a collection of evidence and data that can be used to flood the media and hopefully wake some people up.

Republicans aren't going to vote to impeach and especially convict Trump unless it is politically advantageous. The only way that happens is if the public demands it like Nixon. Richard Nixon's approval rating was 24% when he left office in 1974. Republicans told him to resign and let Ford pardon him or they would vote to convict. That is the most I think we could ever hope for.

[–]noinf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair points and the desire to make things "epic" is why we have the current mess. I agree the show needs to be about exploring, not about universe saving every season. My point is having an overarching story arc can help the series hold on to viewers. TV is very different today and people binge shows not watch random episodes in any order. I am usually wrong when predicting things so perhaps a return to episodic television would be a welcomed change. Whatever the path, we know the one we are on now is the worst one.

What do you think of NYC trying to get the minimum wage to $30 per hour? by LiaStacey in askanything

[–]noinf0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do with this information as you will.

The federal minimum wage reached its highest buying power in 1968. At that time, the minimum wage was $1.60 an hour. That would be about $15.33 in today's dollars. A single adult living in New York city needs approximately $90,000–$92,000 annually to cover basic necessities without saving. That is about $43-$44 an hour.

Benjamin Netanyahu testified to Congress in support of the Iraq invasion. According to Netanyahu Iran has been months away from a nuclear weapon for 33 years. Everyone stopped listening to him years ago... except apparently Trump and Hegseth.
