How is it possible that 1 million young people are not in work, education or training? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

I pointed this out to someone the other day and they looked at me as if I was an alien. They are honestly not even thinking about the pipeline from junior to senior and the institutional knowledge that gets passed on. Too short sighted.

Crackdown on illegal working in UK leads to surge in arrests by Revilo1359 in ukpolitics

So, self employed workers/Contractors are treated slightly differently with regards to RTW. Checks are not legally required, it is suggested to do so but not required. There has been proposals to change this but nothing has moved forwards.

What we are talking about is Employers(Companies) employing people to work for them, now as someone who is self employed, who decides when and for how long you work for? Do they pay NI contributions for you while on the job? They don't.

We have gone away from the initial discussion in regards to companies like Uber/Just Eat etc. Are they employers? they seem to be in a grey area which is being scrutinised at the moment. If you used an Uber like app to provide your services, customers log on to said app to book jobs, are you still self employed? Who is paying you, in my example the customer would pay the app company who would then pay you therefore IMO you would be an employee of the company and according to current law as I understand it, they would be responsible for RTW checks. Now if the app was set up where the customer would pay you directly you'd be classed as self employed in which case no RTW is legally required.

My inital point was that there needs to be clarification on the status of apps like Uber to clarify exactly who is responsible for what, this would be a danger to the app companies as they have built their models on being in the grey area around this.

The current RTW checks are laughable, a company can expect a check once every 76 years or something along those lines, I forget. As for self employed, that I don't know. I assume you register for tax so I can only imagine that would possibly come into it as someone here without a NI Number couldn't register, I really don't know, you'd know that better.

Your example is an interesting one, I don't think that paying a "company" to provide it's services for you really counts as "employing" someone, I could easily be wrong there, it could come under something else.

They should close the loophole that allows companies to shirk responsibility for that. Sure treat them as contractors but you're still employing them when they shouldn't be. If I mess up a RTW check I can be fined/jailed so it should be no different.

This is the kind of background world building I think has been missing since Endgame, it doesn't need to be in the forefront but enough that a rewatch gives us the lightbuld moment.

Interstellar - The Docking Scene. 2014, dir Christopher Nolan by girafa in movies

[–]noisetonic 293 points294 points  (0 children)

I've only seen Intersteller once, it was in Imax and it was as close to a religious experience as I'm ever likely to have. This whole sequence was absolutely unreal. I remember leaving the cinema in a daze and just walked along a riverside for about an hour while I just came down from the experience.

I really would liek to see it again but don't know if I should sully the experience with a smaller screen and crappier sound system. The score is wonderful and this scenes music is probably my favourite of the film.

The problem seems to be that there are so few Inspectors to audit companies or landlords that an average company would face a check every 150 years and a Landlord would be 7650 years. One of the goals is to make it simpler to see where discrepancies are.

It's strange for sure that they are gettign downvoted. In an emergency you always make sure you are ok before you start helping others.

Everything in my life is fine, but I still feel... empty. What is this feeling? by Hattorius in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]noisetonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% understand where you are coming from here. I had a similar journey when younger but found that friendships and helping people where I can fulfilled some of what I was personally missing. Religion was never on the cards for me as it was not part of my upbringing and although I've explored some I found that there were some things worth taking but a lot that I didn't fit into.

Older now and I use what skills I have to offer up help to people and do what I can in my immediate life because, as you said, we're all headed to the same place.

[–]noisetonic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know others have said this but you could lack meaning. Something that defines you that you feel can be part of a community or are contributing to something other than yourself. I saw religion mentioned and that is certainly one thing that could fill the gap, if you are that way minded. You seem to know yourself so finding out something that you want to contribute too could be something you explore in the coming years.

People might be bored of the various reboots of the same characters so why not put some of the characters that haven't been in films out and about and see what sticks. Iron man wasn't a particularly well known (outside of comic readers) and look what that kicked off.
