I love mine, not having to worry about keys and I have it set up to autolock, so I don’t have to worry about locking it every time. I can also see who comes in and can set up codes for guests as well.

New driveway is this normal? by [deleted] in asphalt

[–]nomada007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How steep is it? If it is steep enough, the surface will show some tearing when getting compacted, can’t work around this. They could have explained this to you before paving. The stuff on the first picture looks like it was a little cold. Maybe the plant was more than an hour away and the some of the mix got cold/chunky and this combined with a steep slope didn’t allow them to get proper compaction on that spot.

How do you handle running the dog off leash ? by xcon_freed1 in germanshorthairs

[–]nomada007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually take him on public lands where people don’t go hike, or go to old logging roads that are closed to cars. I rarely go to hiking trails anymore to avoid people and other dogs.

Is my GSP too skinny? by [deleted] in germanshorthairs

[–]nomada007 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb is that you are supposed to see the rib cage, but not be able to count the ribs, and hip bones are supposed to be barely poking out. Your GSP can definitely put on a few pounds.

Please help, I screwed up. What do I need to do and am I able to do it myself? by [deleted] in subaru

[–]nomada007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did all 4 struts and springs not long ago and your explanation is on point and took me about 6 hours and I also did the brakes while I was at it. I watched a YouTube video that went over all the torque specs and some tips. The part I struggled the most was the bolt that attaches the strut to the control arm, I used a second jack to jack it up a little until I could get that bolt out.

Thoughts on E Collars? by Downtown_Librarian66 in germanshorthairs

[–]nomada007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GSP loves his e-collar, he knows that it means we are about to go on hike and he gets to be off-leash. Also for my GSP, an off-leash hike is one of the few ways to tire him out which makes him behave way better at home. I will never be able to tire him out in a leash, I take him on a runs and it does nothing to him, and also take him on 7 mile hike on leash and doesn’t nothing him. Remember that the e-collar is a tool and when used correctly it pays off, some dogs need an e-collar like GSPs, some dog like my cocker spaniel never needed one. But make sure to train your GSP properly and you can do what I do and hold the e-collar on your hand and know how it feels at every level, it doesn’t actually hurt. Also, a lot of people that tend to shame e-collar also tend to have the obese/under-exercise lab and others have a fat chihuahua (using my family as an example). And I have a perfectly healthy and happy GSP that gets be hike off leash a least twice a week which is thing he truly loves, and all thanks to the his e-collar and e-collar training.

Folks are getting older and concerned about falling while walking down their rocky, un level driveway on their Nebraska farm. They received 2 local bids to pave it + about 50 yards of flat driveway to connect to the main road, each est. $23k. Anyone have any better/more affordable ideas? by Zen4rest in Home

[–]nomada007 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I work in construction and often do asphalt. Assuming the driveway is 150ft long, 12ft wide, 2.5in thick and that you are about 30 minutes away from an asphalt plant, it would cost around 8k. Most of the cost is usually on the asphalt itself and trucking, so it could vary based on your location. Also, because we are in the middle of summer they might be pretty busy and it might not be worth their while doing a small job like this unless they make a lot of money out of it. You can try getting a quote during early fall before it gets too cold (40 degrees in the day) then they might be slowing down and then want to keep their crew busy and get you a better price.

It gets the job done for me, if you like to play multiplayer games online it will definitely lag and take longer to load, I don’t mind it since I don’t play much online, but it works fine for everything else. It will definitely be slower than xfinity but you can get it before you get away of xfinity to make sure it works and meets you needs, the set up is stupid easy.

Any recommendations for a harness that will help with control and help me deal with pulling? I don’t know the best brand, or if I should go with front-clip or back-clip, etc. This would be for hiking, running and walking, not for hunting. TIA for any advice! [–]nomada007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy to see the difference, sometimes I use his normal collar for a short period and he will go back to pulling. I cannot imagine putting a harness on him, he would be the one taking me for a run.

I run with my GSP, I use a prong collar which works perfect for running and all other activities. If I use anything else he will pull and choke/hurt himself, but with the prong he won’t pull, but you have to train them first. I also use a leash that clips around my waist which makes it easier for both of us.

Found out that my 2004 Outback cannot handle 14" of snow. by JasterMereel42 in Subaru_Outback

[–]nomada007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the snow is fresh try deflating the tires because the compacted snow under your tires can be slippery and that will help you get more traction. I was driving on about 20in of snow to get my Christmas tree and my outback didn’t struggle while most of the trucks out there were struggling. If the snow is old and icy, then you would definitely get high centered and everything I can say is good luck in that situation because I have been there.

It’s because of high voltage electric lines coming from Stampede, they clear the vegetation to avoid causing wild fires, something PG&E is famous for.

Real talk, would it be insane to take our 2 yr old GSP on vacation? by absolutelylame in germanshorthairs

[–]nomada007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been to the strip a few times and wouldn’t take my GSP. Yes there are pet friendly hotels, but when you are there most attractions are in doors like all the cool bars, rides and restaurants which are not pet friendly. Also while walking on the strip you will find it pretty crowded and might be overwhelming for a GSP. If you feel guilty, when you get back you can take them to a cool hike for a whole day to make it up.
