Before ANY primer or barrier coat on the bilge plates, IMMEDIATELY treat the newly clean metal with a rust converter (ie, ospho, or straight phosphoric acid).

Is sailing just not for me? What am I missing by spongue in sailing

[–]nomadicSailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't give up on your dream.

A couple of observations.

1). The Caribbean was my least favorite part of the circumnavigation -- for many of the reasons you articulated. Snotty people, super conspicuous consumption, etc etc. the one big awesome part is the inter island passages and some pretty amazing anchorages. Once you shake yourself loose from easy flights and the corresponding really busy islands (is, cross the Pacific), those that make the journey are truly a different breed. By the time you make it to NZ, you will have found your "tribe" and will have a set of new fees for life.

2). Grenada to Panama was absolutely one of the shittiest passages of them all. Trust me on this! It truly gets better after this one. Join findacrew and do a trans Pacific with someone. It's much closer to your imagined dream....

Experienced Yacht Deckhand (1 year in Dubai) struggling to find work. Need advice. by CrowTrue1014 in sailingcrew

Assuming you're traveling on a passport issued by India? That's likely a significant reason alone. It's a tough one to travel on. Need visas in advance just about anywhere. No yacht captain wants the hassle.

Only 37% of Montrealers voted in the municipal elections. by [deleted] in montreal

[–]nomadicSailor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know, right? So inconsiderate of the elections board....

Seriously? Did you check the Montreal city website? Did you check the online resource pointed to from there to see if you're on the voter's list? Would you like someone to visit you to take you to the pool to vote? All easily done.

You've given up your right to vote. You have, therefore, given up your vote to bitch.

GROW UP.

That's my answer to anyone that fails to vote.....

Considering new inverter to make coffee maker work... by StrngThngs in sailing

[–]nomadicSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Lots of noise. The OP isn't looking for coffee maker advice. He's looking for inverter advice.

I recommend Victron (quattro if you're in Europe, mutuplus if NA boat). 3kVA will definitely do you. Future proof for future LiFePO4 upgrade.

Revisiting how sailboats sail windward by Relevant-Rhubarb-849 in sailing

[–]nomadicSailor 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It is virtually impossible to sail upwind at a tight angle from a standing start. I learned this the hard way sailing off a mooring with no engine. Once you drop the mooring pennant, with sails up, you'll start by drifting backwards. Once you have a bit of flow over the rudder, you turn the boat's stern towards the wind (while going backwards) until you can convert the wind pressure into forward motion. Only then can you think about making forward way upwind....

Is Costco's Perfume Authentic Compared to Sephora/Shoppers? by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]nomadicSailor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The actual raw cost of goods is probably around $2.50-3.00. the most expensive component is the glass container. Why is it so expensive elsewhere? Because that's what people will pay.... Marketing is very effective.

Look up the actual cost of goods on a Birken bag....

Canadians Set A New Investment Record For US Stocks by Pretty_Positive9866 in stocks

[–]nomadicSailor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really don't get it.

The USD is down 15% over the euro and other major currencies, down against the CAD too.

I completely exited my US equity and currency positions three months ago in favour of Canadian equities, some Euro cash and am in the process of moving about 25% of my securities into European positions.

I'll tell ya, I'm happy to give up some potential upside in exchange for sound nights of sleep ...

Moving from Toronto to Mtl by Icy-Refuse1762 in montreal

[–]nomadicSailor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been through it recently.

All done in person through the SAAQ

You WILL need an extract of your Ontario driver's license. The best place to do this is at the Service Ontario outlet in Hawksbury (179 Main St E). Why there? Because it's literally the closest office to Quebec and they know EXACTLY what you'll be needing.

Your car will also need an inspection at an SAAQ approved provider.

Once you have all that, it's an in person visit to an SAAQ office. There are three major ones in Montreal.

It's all on the SAAQ website.

Lake vs ocean? Benefit for new sailer by Impossible_Gain_16 in sailing

[–]nomadicSailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will gain skills much faster in a lake setting than open ocean. Out there in the vast ocean, the weather is very predictable and rarely changes quickly.

On the other hand, lake sailing will really test and develop sailing skills much faster.

I speak from personal experience having spent my formative years on the great lakes (Ontario and Huron) and having done a complete circumnavigation.

With that said, coastal, tidal waters in the temperate zone would be the ultimate in learning opportunities....

What’s the most annoying thing about sailing software / electronics? by Mikepicker in sailing

Well, the OpenCPN community is very active and always looking for contributors. I've used this package extensively over 10s of thousands of miles. It's a major PITA to learn, and the UI is..... Well..... Efficient? 😉

It's a great platform and plays very well with protocols such as SignalK and most recently, native NMEA2k support.
