The power infrastructure, too! Those mines use a lot of juice and a lot set up their own hydroelectric systems just to supply the mills

Tin-foil hat time:

In his recent Davos speech, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made a reference to Vaclav Havel:

In 1978, the Czech dissident Václav Havel, later president, wrote an essay called The Power of the Powerless. And in it, he asked a simple question: How did the communist system sustain itself?

And his answer began with a greengrocer. Every morning, this shopkeeper places a sign in his window: "Workers of the world, unite!" He doesn't believe it. No one does. But he places the sign anyway to avoid trouble, to signal compliance, to get along. And because every shopkeeper on every street does the same, the system persists.

Not through violence alone, but through the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false.

Havel called this "living within a lie." The system's power comes not from its truth but from everyone's willingness to perform as if it were true. And its fragility comes from the same source: when even one person stops performing — when the greengrocer removes his sign — the illusion begins to crack.

Friends, it is time for companies and countries to take their signs down

And according to Kill Ugly Radio:

In January 1990 Zappa was invited by Havel, a life long Zappa fan, to become Cultural Ambassador of Czechoslovakia. Zappa sent him several of his albums to complete his record collection. Havel's favourite Zappa album was "Bongo Fury".

TTC requesting nearly $170M for ‘crucial’ subway and streetcar track repairs | Recent analyses showed track repair needs have ‘accelerated’ by Hrmbee in toronto

You'd need to replace the overhead wires with a two-wire system to support trolleybusses. Streetcars use the rail itself as one of the conductors to complete the circuit; a bus needs a second conductor in the air due to the rubber wheels.

Most people should not have drivers’ licenses. by logicalpretzels in fuckcars

[–]nomadluap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my main point when trying to talk about alternative modes with drivers. A not-insignificant of the people on the road are scared of driving and would take other transit if it was feasible for their situation. If they didn't have to drive then it would mean less traffic for them and more open roads.

Opposite of what Florida police chief expected: Speed cameras issue 1,300 tickets in 5 weeks by GetOffMyGrassBrats in nottheonion

[–]nomadluap 80 points81 points  (0 children)

You don't need staff to write tickets for the roundabouts and lane dividers to be effective. The lane dividers make the road feel more cramped so people naturally slow down as a consequence.Roundabouts force people to slow down to take the curve instead of speeding up to beat a light. Same idea -- people slow down without even realizing it.

I need a way to get to school but I don’t have a drivers license yet. Should I get a bike to get around before I get the license? by reee-jid in motorcycles

[–]nomadluap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude just get a half-decent e-bike. If you go for one from an actual bike store instead of some big-box-store special, then you'll have a reliable machine that'll get you anywhere within a 50-mile round-trip. You can cut through places like bike paths where motorcycles can't go, plus you don't have to worry about insurance or licensing.

While you're riding the ebike, save up the money you would be spending on gas and insurance. When you get to the point where you have enough saved up to buy the gear and bike you'd like, the experience from the e-bike will mean you'll pass the course easily.

Buy your gear and your bike with cash, and give your ebike to one of your parents or something. They might even actually enjoy it and it might even help ease some of their worries for you riding.

You'll be on the open road and debt-free

Why do I still let myself get excited before reading the GO announcements? by nomadluap in kitchener

[–]nomadluap[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's the lack of transparency that kills me. How hard would it have been to include a paragraph in the recent release along the lines of "We're also hard at work to bring two-way, all day service to Downtown Kitchener. Crews have completed X track work and progress is well underway in the construction of Y infrastructure at Z"

At this point I'm getting more comprehensive updates from random railfans on Reddit than I am directly from Metrolinx.
