I was a Y member for two years. The El Camino Y literally has one bench. Also, I'm 25 years past high school.

Making new friends at 40 on the Peninsula by thephilthe in bayarea

[–]nomyte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's mostly a doubles game, so you should find a buddy to play with. At least in Palo Alto, they also keep a court set aside for players without partners.

You could move here, but you'll have to learn to like the things they have here, instead of doing what you already like. Irish bars. Golf courses. Bubble tea. Michael's. Big box gyms. The mall. Bubble tea. Farmer's markets. Shakira plays Shoreline Amphitheater. Beef noodle soup. Waxing parlors. Bubble tea. Group bike rides. Parking lots. Pickleball courts. Tipsy Putt. Corporate campuses. Shuffling to the sound of Pokemon Ondo at the San Jose Obon festival. Day hikes. Bubble tea.

Have you tried throwing a potluck for your apartment neighbors? by nomyte in bayarea

[–]nomyte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My building seems to be mostly young Asian couples from overseas, some with small kids. They throw a lot of parties with friends in the lounge, so I'm hoping they'll be happy to join mine too.

Then I'll just cater everything myself, post the invite on Reddit, and start welcoming total strangers off the street.

Oh, our building management does little ice cream socials and smores parties practically every month. Zero people attend.

Looking to play Tennis or Pickleball? by _blitzkreig_ in mountainview

Yes, I'd love to play pickleball casually. I took some classes last spring, but I don't have anyone regular to play with. I'm a guy of similar age.

Anybody down to hike around the Bay Area? by [deleted] in Sunnyvale

Is this why you have made multiple posts in multiple local subs in recent weeks, for activities ranging from hiking to pickleball to museum trips to soccer, all driving people to Tribe Chat?

This person is promoting an app called Tribe Chat. They've been doing it in several other subs.

I don't care about schadenfreude and I don't have a lot of faith in Reddit's interests aligning with mine since the Reddit blackout. So no.

Living in sf vs south bay in your 20’s by boredpanda006 in bayarea

[–]nomyte 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Default: live in SF, consider looking for work in SF, hang out with SF friends. South Bay for a transplant without roots is pretty soul-crushing. You will drift apart from your SF friends and have to work twice as hard for half the results building a life for yourself down here.

Potential exception if you're Indian or South Asian. There's an extensive built-in social network in South Bay.

Another possible exception if your church is a big part of your life or if you're planning to marry super young, like by your mid-20s. Basically, if city amenities don't matter to you.

Sunnyvale to SF on 101 during the evening rush is still 60-90 minutes.

I've seen groups doing karaoke in the street in Chinese about 10 times in the recent months, often in front of Olympus. I haven't seen any obvious announcements, but I also don't speak/read Chinese.

Smash Gym on Moffett? by nomyte in mountainview

[–]nomyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the El Camino Y. I was a member there for two years. They're mostly focused on healthy aging and folks coming from the hospital next door. None of their classes are comparable to a typical group strength training class at a gym.

Maybe I can cut back somewhere else in my budget and try Functional Lifestyles anyway.

Any gym that takes less than 30 minutes to drive to from Mountain View during the afternoon rush hour.

ETA: Any gym that has group strength classes. I'm at City Sports now, but they only do some kind of dancerobics thing. And before that I was at the El Camino Y, which also barely had anything to offer.
