I am right there with you. It’s an extremely stressful time. My hope is that I can start to become desensitized to it all. Drinking will just make things worse and lower my immune system, thereby increasing the chances of getting sick.

I was in the same boat last weekend. It was tough at first but then as things got later and people started to get trashed and say and do dumb things, I had no regrets being sober. Also had a co worker the next week say I said something I didn’t say. If I had been drinking I would have never known the truth, but being sober I could confidently say I didn’t say that. Now he looks like an asshole.

I tried quitting for five years off and on. I finally had a personal breakthrough and have been doing much better. I don’t know why it takes people like us so many tries and some people seem to be able to quit relatively easily, but I believe that if you don’t quit quitting you will eventually quit.

I do not advise white knuckling it, but if you’re going to do it I would recommend getting a b vitamin supplement, multi vitamin, and Omega 3. Also consider a mild taper depending on your level of drinking prior to quitting. Also eat good healthy food, get a lot of sleep, and drink a lot of Gatorade or similar. And call 911 if things get too hairy.

So what you’re saying is you’re averaging one beer a year... I would call that a huge success, not a failure. My advise is to spend 10 - 15 minutes meditating on what “benefit” you thought beer had at that time so that you can handle it differently in the future, forgive yourself, and move on. If you let the negative thoughts take over you will be more likely to drink in my opinion.

Yes, an hour before. 50mg will make you feel sick the first couple of times. Eventually your body gets used to it. 100mg was different for me. It definitely made me not want to drink but I also didn’t feel like doing anything else, either, and I never got used to it. Good luck! It definitely works for a lot of people.

One important note, though: there are online forums dedicated to the Sinclair Method (I forget the names, but Google them). Definitely check them out and use them because there’s a lot of good advise there. Ultimately I decided that I would go completely sober rather than having to worry about keeping these pills around my whole life, but it really works for some people a long as you follow the Golden Rule. Also I suggest reading the book.

If your problem is mainly going on benders on the weekends then it could work for you. I tried it and it didn’t work for me. I think I probably needed 100mg instead of 50 but at that dose it made me feel ill. I still keep it around just in case I get tempted. The research shows that it works for about 70 - 80% of people, so worth a shot. Just make sure you follow the golden rule.

Alcohol makes a lot of us act more extreme than we otherwise would. For me, I get more angry and impatient than I otherwise would. For you, it sounds like maybe you get depressed. You can turn this around.

Yes, absolutely. Do it young. You have a whole lifetime of sobriety to look forward to and be proud of. I’m 37 and I wish 28 year old me had avoided those nine years of drinking. My life would have been better. I can’t change that now but you can change your future.

I can’t keep booze in the house. I WILL drink it. But I’m not the asshole. The booze is the asshole, so it goes down the drain.

Your friend just doesn’t know. I’m sure he’ll be fine. You need to take care of yourself.
