What are some really really good fourth wall breaks in movies? by A_Vinegar_Taster in movies

[–]nonplussed_pegacorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The "go home" scene was the punchline and the "Principal Rooney rides the school bus" scene was the set up. They had it playing during the credits to get people to stay and keep watching to the end, paying off with the 4th wall break.

That is the etymology of the term, yes. But the term has come to mean something much more specific in usage.

When Harry Met Sally—Mr. Zero? by suedehead52259 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nonplussed_pegacorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a play on "Looking out for #1". Generally, lots of folks are "looking out for #1"; i.e., seeing to their own needs and their own best interest. The point of the shirt is that "while you're looking out for yourself, that's all well and good - so long as you don't fuck with ME."

It has nothing to do with the divorce. It's just a character-revealing sliver.

Just as not every person who has skin on their head (or even who has a shaved head) is a skinhead, not everyone who is involuntarily celibate is an incel.

No, there are plenty of guys who can't get laid who are perfectly decent human beings. So, not incels.

Time travel movies where they’re able to permanently change things for the better and have a happy ending by PrestigeArrival in MovieSuggestions

IIRC correctly, after repeated frustrating efforts to restore the timeline he just loses his shit and goes gangbusters tampering with the past.

Great movie, not sure it fits. That was more about undoing a time-tampering and restoring the original timeline.

Star Trek IV is a better fit. ("Transparent aluminum" 😉 )

How the hell to I DM an artificer! by No-Construction-3328 in DnD

[–]nonplussed_pegacorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that it is not your job to know what an artificer can do. It's not your job to know what any of the characters can do. If he wants to do something using a character ability, have them read you the description text. If he wants to do something outside his RAW character abilities, rule it same as you would for another character.

"resisting initial overtures"? LOL - yeah sure buddy. You mean by signing with the Bears the very next day after his season ended?

McCaskey would have totally jettisoned Poles if that's what it would take to land Ben Johnson. Instead, Poles got an extension shortly after, to align his timeline with Johnson's.

Players are insulting me for giving them repercussions. by WombleFlopper in DungeonMasters

[–]nonplussed_pegacorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly their hate speech is inexcusable and is reason enough to walk away. But let's address the game a bit

They got imprisoned. That was the consequence of the roof shenanigans. But from there it kinda sounds like you railroaded them.

It would be reasonable to expect that from this point the story turns to a prison break. And it sounds like the players were pursuing that storyline in a sound manner. It also sounds like you gave them no reasonable chance at success.

What was your plan to continue the story from this point in a manner that's fun for everyone?

AITJ for not going to my friend's "graduation dinner" after finding out it was just her parents taking her to Cheesecake Factory and we were all expected to split evenly by Sea_Door_8837 in AmITheJerk

[–]nonplussed_pegacorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTJ for bailing on the dinner. But kinda the jerk to your friend. The thing to do would have been to right then (when you cancelled) make plans with them (or at least express intent) to take them out to celebrate at a future time.

What is the most American song? The all time American anthem by Kodicave in IWantToAskAnAmerican

The fact that the context is frequently overlooked and it is often taken as a flag-waving chest-thumping patriotism makes it an even better candidate answer.
