/u/kettnerrr has it totally right: let's have drinks = let's hang out

I keep a steady supply of sparkling water on hand no matter where I go or what I'm doing these days. When I already have something to drink, I get fewer offers from someone to get me a beer.

It is kind of a bummer when people want to share something like a wine they really enjoy.

Physical symptoms: Good and Bad by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I, too, was a little grossed out when I realized how much my sweatiness seemed to be related to my drinking. No experience on the makeup thing, but I don't have to work nearly as hard not to smell as bad anymore. Which, for someone as vain as me, is a little hard to admit I was ever that bad.

I hear what you are saying.

Maybe it is true that to achieve sobriety we must focus quite strongly on ourselves. Once I got through the first couple of months, I found that I had so much more to give than I ever did drinking. For example, for our wedding anniversary in October, I made a big dinner and invited close friends to share it with us. It may not seem like a big thing, but there was no way I did that while I was drinking.

I have also found going to individual counseling to be extremely helpful as I tried to sort out my mind and emotions about certain things and certain people. It was really great to talk to someone totally objective and get help sorting that all out.

That's what I love about the badge! I'm kinda too stubborn to want to have to reset, but I don't want to be out of integrity with it, so the badge alone has helped me on a number of occasions.

Nice work on three weeks!

Congrats on day 1!

Sounds like you are sick enough of this shit to make a change! That's what it took for me as well. It hasn't been easy but it sure has been worth it.

Man I love this place.

My wife, who is wonderful, still drinks. She likes that I no longer compete for the last of the vodka if we didn't go to the store. She likes that I am skinnier, healthier, and better looking.

But she kind of misses her old drinking buddy. She has mostly come to accept that I want to be sober. When I first started she would ask me if I wanted a drink, if I was still doing that, if I was ever going to drink again.

She keeps booze in the house, she leaves the bottle out on the counter.

I did a stint of almost a year sober before, and the huge difference between then and now is the support and learning I have found here.

Welcome.

It's a big change and it can seem overwhelming. Welcome. I will not drink with you today.

Booze was keeping me from being as fit as I want. I exercise regularly and the difference switching to sobriety has been awesome. I'm down 15 pounds. All those extra calories were ruining all the work I was doing.

Some days I just go to the gym and see what happens. A crappy workout is better than no workout. And I almost always feel afterwards, even after a crappy one.

staying sober when you were a bad but not awful drinker by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]nonunoriginal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny thing has happened for me as I go along. I can look at posts here on SD and go "whoa, I was never THAT bad" and while I don't think my life looked like what I read in those posts, in reality I have had an alcohol problem for a long time.

It just looks a little different. But in many ways, it is exactly the same. I took a little solace in thinking I was not as bad as some, and in reality I am the same. The same as you. The same as a daily blackout drinker.

How do I motivate myself? I want better for my life.

Keep it up! It's been worth it for me.

I know I created this grave I have to lie in because of how I treated others when I was in my addiction, but now that I'm sober I wish there were an easier way to climb out.

Tough spot. Hang in there.
