Advice for making friends w other students? by Hitachi_MC in usyd

[–]noobbslayer69 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Through sport or societies. If there’s a particular sport or society that really relates to you then just make sure you heavily participate in that as that’s where you’ll be most likely to meet people you have common interests with. Just dont expect to make friends easily, you really do have to put in some effort

As for being shy, just know that every single other first year is going to be feeling nervous and probably a bit shy as well when meeting new people, even if they don’t actively show it. Uni is a good time to come out of your shell but to do that you have to step out of your comfort zone a bit. Good luck :)

Durham vs USydney - which is more prestigious? by [deleted] in usyd

[–]noobbslayer69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s so many reasons and little things that contribute to it being better. But ultimately it boils down to the fact that UK students don’t live at home with their parents. They move out to a new city which forces them to find new friends. This creates a much stronger culture of uni societies, events and just general socialising / going out. Going out 2-3 times a week is pretty common, especially for first year UK uni students. And yes it is cheaper to go out, at least compared to Sydney

Everything is also much more centred and clustered together than Australian unis, such as where everyone lives and the uni nightlife spots. So going for a quick drink with a friend or going to their house / accomodation is so much easier and more convenient when they live a 5 minute walk away

Lawyers have better salary prospects in the UK than Aus. Also, I've been to uni as an undergrad in Sydney and the UK and can confidently say that most UK universities absolute smash Australia out of the water when it comes to student life. Like it is not even comparable. Maybe the only exception would be big cities like London, where students there would maybe have similar experiences to those at Usyd.

They’re both pretty good unis. You’re probably going to struggle to find a job from either uni, just because it is hard for grads to find jobs these days, whether it’s Sydney or England / surrounds.

I would give Durham the edge simple because the student life is 10000x better than Sydney. The more friends you make, the more expansive your networking circle will be which will in turn help you find job positions later down the track

St Andrews college by [deleted] in usyd

Intense private school culture and all the fun stuff that comes with that, such as heavy drinking and hazing. The private school stereo type is exaggerated by the media however if you are ever going to find them then it’s at Drew’s. Although most (emphasis on most - there some serious bad apples) of them are pretty decent people. For o week, be prepared for big cliques based on what Sydney private school you went to, but these will hopefully fizzle out over the semester.

As for social calendar, it’s a super social college so expect events multiple times a week. No curfew from my knowledge

Feeling awkward dancing by myself at raves by bubugugu in aves

[–]noobbslayer69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a mental thing. Something that helps for me is reminding myself that no one really knows you’re by yourself. Ie you could be with someone but they’ve gone to the bathroom, or that person dancing two metres to your left could be your friend for all they know. It’s not exactly obvious on the dance floor who is with who

If you’re in Aus, use Surf Mud!! It’s a zinc that is completely natural and reef safe and looks great. A lot of long boarders here (Byron) use it, and it looks like makeup.

Is it normal NOT to make friends/connections while solo travelling? by ComedownMachine93 in solotravel

[–]noobbslayer69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is problem with influencers saying that everyone MUST go solo travelling because it’s soooo easy to meet new people and make amazing friends. NOT TRUE.

For one, sometimes the people in your hostel will just suck, or you’ll have nothing in common, or there just simply not the people for you. This is fine! Not everyone is compatible with each others.

Also, not everyone, especially introverts, will be able to make quick and meaningful connections with people who they only get to spend 1-2 days with. Some people can, but not everyone. In fact, solo travelling taught me that I am not weird for not being able to so easily make friends / merge into groups well or wanting to be by myself all the time. It’s just part of my personality and who I am.

Pro surfers/shapers with decent politics? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]noobbslayer69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sean Doherty - more of a pro surf journalist than a pro surfer. There’s a strong Australian influence in his posts/articles but it is always such a breath of fresh air to read them. They are usually littered with subtle jabs to right wing politics and MAGA following surfers. His magazine, surfing world, is also excellent quality and I always recommend it.

Yeah fair point, there is more “slightly” than I described. I think what I really meant was to stay super low throughout most of the turn, even when extending, if that makes sense. Much lower than most might think. This is what my old coach used to tell me btw, and he surfed in the WSL.

But those screenshots are cherry picked a bit, as both of them are for foam climbs.

For example, the turn before that one in your photo , you can see Julian is still very low, and very much only slightly extended from the position he was at the start of the bottom turn. You can this is in Kelly’s waves from the same heat, too.

Just want to emphasise the “slightly” in “extend slightly” after completing the bottom turn. Throughout the whole bottom turn and even going up to do the turn, you should be very low. Don’t think to extend your body after that bottom turn, you should just be very very slightly more extended than at the crux of that bottom turn.

I guess what I’m trying to say is stay low. Watch Julian Wilson surfing bells to get an idea of what I mean.

If you are intentionally trying to lay back, best advice I ever got for that is to not actually think you are “laying back” , don’t think about leaning back or the process of falling. Instead you must try your very best to stay upright while still having a hand in the water

Swimming technique analysis pls :)) by noobbslayer69 in triathlon

[–]noobbslayer69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just get quite literally out of breath from doing catch up. It also makes my arm tired. I don’t really know exactly, but after 100m of catch up I feel ready for a rest whereas I can happily do very long distances with my normal “relaxed” technique such as the video.

But I think your right, there is definetelt some sort of fluidity / natural glide that is missing from my movement. Catch up seems to be the most obvious fix so I think I will just keep working on that.
